1. God is our refuge.

shadow of your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my
mortal enemies who surround me.

Isaiah 25:4 You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the
needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the
heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against
a wall.

the day of disaster.

2. The LordJesus, himself, was to experience great abuse.

Isaiah 53:5-6 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was
crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace
was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep,

have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the
c:I LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

3. When we feel alone, God is there, and we can call on him.

:t Psalm 142:1-7 I cry aloud to the LoRD; I lift up my voice to the

LORDfor mercy.I pour out my complaint before him; before him
I tell my trouble. When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you
== who know my way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a
snare for me. Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for
me. I haveno refuge;no one caresfor my life.I cry to you, 0 LoRD;
~ I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
Listen to my cry,for I am in desperate need; rescueme from those
who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. Set me free from
~ my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will
gather about me because of your goodness to me.

~ 4. Although we do not know when or how God will rescue, in some

way he will provide the strength.

from men of violence, who deviseevilplans in their hearts and stir
up war every day.They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's;
~ the poison of vipers is on their lips. Keep me, 0 LORD,from the
hands of the wicked;protect me from men of violencewho plan to
trip my feet. Proud men have hidden a snare for me; they have
~ spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along
my path. 0 LORD,I sayto you, "Youare my God." Hear, 0 LORD,
my cry for mercy. 0 Sovereign LORD,my strong deliverer, who
shields my head in the dayof battle-do not grant the wicked their

desires, 0 LORD;do not let their plans succeed, or they will become
proud. Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with
the trouble their lips have caused. Let burning coals fall upon them;
may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. Let
slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down
men of violence. I know that the LoRD secures justice for the poor
and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise
your name and the upright will live before you.

ingwe can do to correct the past we must trust it to God's future care.

Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have

taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead. . .

Matthew 10:26 So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing

concealedthat will not be disclosed,or hidden that willnot be made
known.

Comfort for the Abused

1. Our God who is sovereign over our past can help us today.
Psalm 103:3-11 Who forgives all your sins and heals all your
diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with
love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. The LORD works
righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known
his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people ofIsrad: The LORD is
compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He
will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does
not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our
iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great
is his love for those who fear him.

for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I

~ power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in
weaknesses,in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.
