Elaborate visual effects in “The Solitary Reaper” by Wordsworth.

Answer

The majestic poet of nature in the stream of consciousness sees an enchanting girl who is
alone working in a field and sings a captivating song. The incident is very common but the
visual description of the poet has made it an artistic poem. The selection of words and the
musical rhyme suits the common theme of the poem. The very first word of the poem
-behold- makes us conscious of the deep impression which the girl’s song is going to make
on the poet’s mind. The metaphors of “vale profound overflowing” and “silence of the seas”
have a great visual effect. The similes of “nightingale’s song” and “Cuckoo’s song” are
striking. Many pictures of images like “Reaping and singing by herself and singing at her
work” make the poem a lifelike picture.
