What is Arts?
What is Arts?
Art is a highy diverse range of human activities
engaged in creating visual, auditory, or performed
artifacts-artworks-that express the author’s imaginative
or technical skill, and are intended to to be appreciated
for their beauty or emotional power.
Art Defined
The oldest documented forms of art are
visual arts, which include images or objects in
fields like painting, sculpture, printmaking,
photography, and other visual media.
Architecture is often included as one of the
visual arts.
In this unit, the activities will enchance the
characteristic of every learner and equip them
with the basic skills needed to create a simple art
which will enable them to be well- rounded
individuals who can describe art in their own
simple way.
Teaching Arts in the Elementary
Grades
“Arts experiences are essential: in the fullest
development of youth at all levels of growth
because they promote the self-realization of the
whole individual by integrating the
imaginative, creative, intellectual and manual

about ourselves and those around us.

concreteproducts and fosters collaboration.

Why do we teach Arts?

Objectives in Teaching Arts
1. To Help Students
Develop Creativity
Art education aims to help students develop and
improve their creative skills. That allows them to
develop new ideas and concepts to create innovative and
original works of art. Alongside creativity, art education
helps students embrace critical thinking and
communication skills to help them nurture aesthetic
sensitivity.
2. To Help Students
Develop Art Skills
Art education aims to help students develop the
technical skills needed to organize all the visual elements
to communicate experiences and concepts through various
art media. For that, the students learn to demonstrate
the use of design elements and tools, the processes,
handling of material, and the creation of original art
objects.
3. To Help Students Gain and
Find Satisfaction in Arts

Arts education also aims to make the students


derive pleasure in art. That helps students develop
further interest and passion in art, which is
critical to making them desire to advance in arts.
The objective is met by ensuring students
participate in arts activities.
4. To Help Students Pursue
Their Interest in Art

Arts education aims to help students pursue a


lifelong interest in arts. That can essentially lead to
students developing an art career and getting the
most from it. The objective is met by teaching the
students relevant content that they can apply out of
class. Art education also teaches students art skills
and best practices of utilizing learned skills.
History of Art
Art is often examined through the interaction of the
principles and elements of art. The principles of art
include movement, unity, harmony, variety,
balance, contrast. proportion and pattern. The
elements include texture, form, space, shape, color,
value and line. The various interactions between the
elements and principles of art help artists to
organize sensorial pleasing works of art while also
giving viewers a framework within which to analyze
and discuss aesthetic ideas.
For Immanuel Kant, the aesthetic experience
of beauty is a judgment of a subjec- tive, but
common, human truth. He argued that all
people should agree that a rose is beautiful if
it indeed is.
For Arthur Schopenhauer, aesthetic
contemplation of beauty is the freest and
most pure that intellect can be. He believes
that only in terms of aesthetics do we
contemplate perfection of form without any
kind of worldly agenda.
Sometimes beauty is not the artist's ultimate
goal. Art is often intended to appeal to, and
connect with, human emotion. Artists may
express something so that their audience is
stimulated in some way creating feelings,
religious faith, curiosity, interest,
identification with a group, memories,
thoughts, or creativity.
Learning Theories and Art Education
Early childhood development provides a base for children to form who
they are as individuals and art curriculum should be based on principles of
respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery
in a supportive and enriching environment that follows the interests of the
child based from theories developed.
Educational opportunities must provide students control over the
direction of their learning.
Learning must include methods that allow touching, moving, listening,
seeing, and hearing.
Learning has a relationship with others and with material items
in the world.
In order for learning to take place, students must be allowed to
explore.
Children and adult learners must have endless ways and
opportunities to express themselves.
Arts education develops creativity, one of the top five skills
employers prize for the 21st century. Students receiving an arts-
rich education perform better on assessments of creativity than
do students receiving little or no arts education.
Students who participate in the arts develop
leadership skills, including decision-making,
strategy building, planning and reflection. They
also prepare to use these skills effectively by
developing a strong sense of identity and
confidence in their ability to affect the world
around them in meaningful ways.

When students are making a work of art, the
process includes conceptual and
interpretational thinking that helps build
their critical thinking skills including
observation, reasoning, and problem-
solving.
