ORDER OF INSTALLATION WITHIN MASS WHEN THE
BISHOP PRESIDES

PRESENTATION OF THE PASTOR-ELECT

After the gospel, the pastor-elect stands before the bishop, who addresses the people in these or
similar words:

My dear friends, because I am aware of your pastoral needs and am

confident of Father N.’s qualifications for the office of pastor, I now commend
Father N. to you as your new pastor.

WELCOME BY THE PEOPLE

The bishop may then invite the people to express their approval and support of their new pastor.

HOMILY
The bishop in the homily, based on the sacred text and pertinent to the particular place and the
people involved, explains the meaning of the celebration.

PRESENTATIONS
The pastor stands before the bishop who introduces him to various groups of the parish.

PRESENTATION OF THE PARISH CLERGY AND STAFF

The priests, deacons, and other members of the parish staff are presented to the new pastor by the
bishop:

N., my brother, Father N.N., Deacon N.N., and N.N. will assist you in the
pastoral care of the people of this parish. Share this ministry in a spirit of
mutual trust, common prayer, and genuine concern.
The new pastor is greeted by his associates in the parish ministry.
PRESENTATION OF THE PARISH TRUSTEES
The parish trustees come forward and the bishop presents them to the new pastor:

Father N., N.N. and N.N. are the civil trustees of this parish. As the lay
officers of the parish corporation they will share with you the
responsibility for the parish’s corporate and legal affairs.

PROFESSION OF FAITH AND OATH

Next the bishop addresses the new pastor, who stands facing him:

Remember, my brother N., always be a loving father, a gentle shepherd,

and a wise teacher of your people, so that you may lead them to Christ
who will strengthen all that you do.

As a teacher of that faith, I ask you now to lead your people in the
profession of their faith.
The pastor then faces the people and leads them in the profession of faith (Nicene Creed). At the
conclusion of the profession of faith, the pastor faces the bishop and recites the following oath:

With firm faith I also believe everything contained in God’s Word,

Written or handed down in tradition
And proposed by the Church,
Whether in solemn judgment or in ordinary and universal magisterium,
As divinely revealed and calling for faith.
I also firmly accept and hold each and every thing
That is proposed by the Church definitively
Regarding teaching on faith and morals.

Moreover, I adhere with religious submission of will and intellect

To the teachings which either the Roman Pontiff
Or the college of bishops enunciate
When they exercise the authentic magisterium
Even if they proclaim those teachings in an act
That is not definitive.
GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
The bishop introduces the general intercessions using these or similar words. Additional
intentions may be added, if desired.

Let us now pray for the Church and its leaders, especially the new pastor
of this parish, and for the needs of all people.
Rx. Lord, hear our prayer.

For N., our pope, for N., our bishop, and all the bishops of the Church,
that they may lead us to a more faithful living of the gospel, we pray to
the Lord. Rx.

have hardened their hearts to the needs of their brothers and sisters, we
pray to the Lord. Rx.

For the poor of our community and throughout the world, that we may
be responsive to their needs and share with them from our bounty, we
pray to the Lord. Rx.
Assisting minister:

For ourselves, that we who form the parish of N. may work together to
proclaim the good news of Christ’s love, we pray to the Lord. Rx.
The bishop then says the concluding prayer:
Gracious God,
You have nourished and protected your Church
By providing it with pastors
Who are stewards of your word and sacraments.
Strengthen our brother N.
As he begins a new ministry among us,
And help us all to follow your Son, Jesus Christ,
Who is Lord, for ever and ever.
Rx. Amen.
The Mass continues with the preparation of the altar and the gifts.
