ACTIVITY

Identify simple and compound sentences in this selection.


Flying is an excellent way to travel. Despite long stretches of
boredom and the inability of passengers sitting by the window to see
anything at all, one can pass the time reading up-to-date magazines
and eating excellent food provided by the airlines. Although fares are
high and accidents are usually fatal, the ride is comfortable and is
faster than in any other form of transportation. Flying is best for those
who must get from one place another fast.

BLUE- Simple Sentence


GREEN- Compound Sentence

ACTIVITY

Put together the following short, choppy sentences into one clear,
concise sentence.

1. Pedro wanted to be in the honor roll. He tried his best.


Pedro tried his best to be on the honor roll.

2. The new student did not know the method of paying tuition. He went
to the treasurer’s office.
The new student didn't know how to pay tuition, so he went to
the treasurer's office.
3. I sent my order to the National Bookstore. Books of fiction were
ordered.
I ordered books of fiction from the National Bookstore.

4. My town is six kilometers from Pasig. I go home riding (use


horseback).
I ride home from my town, which is six kilometers from Pasig.

5. The junior team wanted to play. The team called on us freshmen to


play against them.

ACTIVITY

The following sentences sound very childish. Each set can be


improved by being combined into sentence. Use the method suggested in the
parenthesis.

1. The men were much alarmed so were the women. (Compound


subject)

The men were so much alarmed than the women.

2. Our class read Rizal. We dramatized our favorite scene.


(Compound predicate)

Complete the following sentences by using parallel structures.

Write a two-paragraph about a Filipino ballerina who excelled in her art. Use

Catriona Elisa Gray a young and talented Filipina when she became a
famous ballerina in the Philippines. She trained in England and Canada at
the age of eight. When she performed at the Cultural Center of the
Philippines (CCP) in 2016, her performance caught the eyes and captured
the hearts of judges and audiences.

Her dances is a gentle lyricism and a relaxed flow of movement. The


way she performs on the stage is elicited almost visible contentment from
the audience and critics. In this event, she danced alluringly and was
beautifully executed.

ACTIVITY

Go to YouTube, and watch any concert (opera, jazz, symphony or


philharmonic, bands, etc.) and describe the program --- the number of
songs, the lyrics of the songs, the performance of the presenters, etc. Use
parallel structures and connectives.
LISTEN TO THE MUSICAL HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BONN OPERA GALA

The 2016 Opera Gala in Bonn was a cacophony of voices and musical
emotions, as it has been every year. It also provided a one-stop shop for
the most interesting singers on the scene. To hear them all, one would have
had to travel across Europe for months. As a result, it's not unexpected that
these events are quickly sold out. "Even 60 Australians were planning to
attend," says Arndt Hartwig, a co-initiator. Even though the gala has been
postponed until May 2021, he is still hoping not to disappoint them.

The 2016 Opera Gala, presented by Bettina Böttinger, a TV personality


of German public broadcaster WDR (West German Broadcasting), is a
musical kaleidoscope with familiar melodies from Strauss's Die Fledermaus,
Verdi's Don Carlos, Gounod's Romeo and Juliet, and Beethoven's Fidelio.
However, the playbill contains music by composers such as Umberto
Giordano, Robert Stolz, Ernesto de Curtis, Luigi Arditi, Federico Moreno
Torroba, Franz Lehar, Leo Delibes, and Salvatore Cardillo.

Roberto de Biasio, Andrea Carè, Ingeborg Gillebo, Robin Johannsen,


Simone Kermes, Davide Luciano, Julia Novikova, Marina Prudenskaya,
Luca Salsi, and Chiara Skerath are among the performers. All exhibit pure
dedication, having offered to sing for free for the sake of the cause. They
are accompanied by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, which is conducted by
Stefan Blünier, the orchestra's previous principal conductor.

The lovely vocal blend of Ingeborg Gillebo and Robin Johannsen in the
Flower Duet from Delibes' "Lakme" and the humorous appearance of
soprano Simone Kermes as the wind-up doll in Offenbach's "Tales of
Hoffmann" stand out in memory. Even those who were present in 2016 or
heard the performance on DW's Concert Hour would appreciate the chance
to see it again.
