Syllabus for Mid-Year Examination (Term-1)

English Playscript: Brother in the Land
Literature ● All acts and scenes of the playscript
● Analyzing characters and their types
● Determining an author’s point of view or purpose in a text (e.g., first-
person, second-person, and third-person)
● Determining types of conflict in a text
● Determining how authors use language, including figurative language
considering the impact on the reader

Poetry:

Reading Comprehension:
English ● Textual, inferential and analytical questions
Language ● Distinguishing between the connotative and denotative meaning of words
and their appropriate use in a variety of writing and texts
● Explaining the meaning of words from how they are used in different
contexts

Writing task:
● Writing a descriptive essay using precise words and phrases, relevant
descriptive details, and sensory language to convey experiences and
events
● Writing a narrative essay to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective techniques, relevant descriptive details, and well-
structured event sequences
● Writing opinion piece on topics or texts, supporting a point of view, ideas,
opinions, experiences and arguments with examples and evidences
● Writing dialogue between people, giving narration/background in brackets,
using conventions of the director’s notes
● Writing informal and formal letters in extended social and academic
environments for various purposes
● Writing factual recount e.g., news articles for the class, school or

community
● Identifying types of narration, transition words and phrases, opening a
narrative, precise words and phrases. Using a variety of transition words,
phrases, and clauses to convey sequence and signal shifts from the one-
time frame or setting to another.
● Using common punctuation cues to aid comprehension when reading
(e.g., comma, full stop, exclamation mark, colon, dash, parenthesis,
ellipses, apostrophe)

Speaking:
Students should be able to speak on any given topic for 2-3 minutes
● Speak to give information
● Speak to describe something using appropriate vocabulary
● Speak to give opinions, and extend ideas by supporting them with
evidence and examples

Listening:
Students listen to audio clip/teacher’s reading aloud
● Listen to follow instructions
● Listen to answer the questions, understand the main idea

● Differentiate facts from speaker’s opinions

● Word problems involving ratios (partnership) and rate.
● Solve problems involving direct and inverse proportions of two quantities
using (a table, equation, and graph).
● Solve word problems related to real-life situations involving direct and
inverse proportion, and compound proportion.

6) 2D and 3D Shapes
● Circle ( arc, segments, tangents, concentric circles)
● Area of the sector and Arc length
● Calculate the length of any side of a right-angled triangle using Pythagoras
Theorem
● Solve word problems with real-life contexts involving Pythagoras Theorem

7) Line and Angle Properties


● Construct a triangle with 2 sides and an angle.

8) Construction of Angles, Bisectors, and Polygons


● Construct different types of quadrilaterals ( square, rectangle,
parallelogram, rhombus, trapezium, and kite)

9) Transformation
● Rotate a shape clockwise and counterclockwise (Rotational

Transformation)
● Locate the center and angle of rotation.

10) Frequency Distribution and Statistical Graphs


● Difference between discrete, continuous, grouped and ungrouped data
● Construct and interpret frequency distribution tables for discrete data only (both
grouped and ungrouped)
● Construct and interpret histograms for both discrete and continuous data with
equal/ unequal interval range (with overlapping class boundaries) using heights
of rectangles and frequency densities
● Construct and interpret frequency polygons for both discrete and continuous data
with equal interval range (with overlapping class boundaries only)

11) Measures of Central Tendency


● Calculate mean of grouped continuous data (by finding mid-value)
