6. Date and time the tubing (do it at the
beginning so you don’t forget or it may get wet or lost).
8. Open IV bag packaging (if it has it) and hold the
IV bag in your non-dominate hand upside down. There are two ports on the bag, a medication administration port which you won’t be using and spiking port . 9. Pull stopper off spiking port (keep port opening sterile and don’t touch it) 10. Remove spike sleeve (don’t touch the spike)
11.Spike the IV bag by inserting the spike into the
spiking port (do this by performing a twisting motion) 12. Hang bag on the IV pole.
13. Squeeze drip chamber until half way full
(most chamber have an indicator) 14. With distal end of tubing over a basin / sink / garbage, slowly open roller clamp to prime the IV tubing. Check the tubing and make sure there are no large air bubbles (very small ones are okay)… you can flick it or re-flush the line again to remove them. 15. Close roller clamp, cover distal end with sterile dead-ender or sterile protective cover. Hang tubing on IV pole to prevent from touching the ground. Keep the distal end sterile prior to connecting IV to patient. 16. After connecting to the patient IV site Label tubing and IV bag with date, time, and initials. Label IV solution bag as per agency policy. Do not write directly on the IV bag. 17. Discard the empty packaging and return any materials used to proper places.
