1. Introduction
1. Introduction
This booklet has been issued to inform the A320 operators of the potential
capabilities of the AIDS/ACMS related to intensive trouble-shooting and
investigation tasks for TELEDYNE FDIMU.

The AIDS/ACMS function consists of:

• Flight Data Interface and Management Unit (FDIMU)
• Digital AIDS recorder (DAR) (optional)
• Remote Print button
• PCMCIA card (if installed)

The MCDU 1 and 2 are connected to the FDIMU and used for programming
and displaying AIDS/ACMS data. The printer of the CFDS is connected to the
FDIMU and used mostly to issue hard copies of AIDS/ACMS reports.

The AIDS/ACMS is one of the most powerful tool for collecting and processing
digital parameters on A/C. The following features are major interest for complex
system troubleshooting and investigation:

1. Real time parameter read-out

Selected parameters can be displayed on cockpit MCDU in binary form or

directly in engineering units using their A429 label or alpha call-up.

2. Data recording

• Selectable data recording:

2 functions can provide data recording: SAR (Smart Access Recorder) and
DAR (Digital AIDS Recorder).
The DAR word data frame as well as SAR are free programmable by the
operator through ground programming tool (AGSIV for TELEDYNE FDIMU).

• Airbus standard reports

By default, Airbus provides some pre-programmed reports to monitor and
troubleshoot systems as engines and APU. The list of pre-programmed
reports is described into AMM 31-36-00 and 31-37-00.

• Programmable reports
Up to 100 reports can be programmed and printed-out and/or ACARS
transmitted. These reports are programmable through ground programming
tool so called AGSIV for TELEDYNE FDIMU.

ACMS Menu Selection
_
1. MCDU OPERATION
The MCDU is operated via several keys (line select, mode, function). The
acknowledgement of the user action is indicated on the screen.

When the “MCDU MENU” key is activated the MCDU will respond with the
display of the “MCDU MENU” page. This page indicates the selectable
systems.

The MCDU display contains 14 lines, each having 24 characters. Of these 14

lines, the top line (line 1) is used as a title line or to display data to which the ope-
rator does not have access. The bottom line (line 14) is used as a scratchpad
line for entering data into the system or to display specific messages.

2. MCDU KEYS
The keyboard has the following keys:
a) Alphanumeric keys:
Activating an alphanumeric key (0 through 9,
A through Z, . , + , - Δ , and /) enters that characterinto
the scratchpad of the MCDU

b) Page keys:
Activating the MCDU MENU key
causes the MCDU menu to be
displayed.
The other mode keys are not used for AIDS/ACMS.

c) Function keys:
“ ” (next page) = causes horizontal scrolling to occur
“ ” (previous page) = causes horizontal scrolling to
occur “ ” (scroll up) = causes upward vertical scrolling
to occur “ ” (scroll down) = causes downward scrolling
to occur “CLR” = allows clearing of scratchpad and
data fields.

3.3 MCDU SPECIAL SYMBOLS

There are special symbols on MCDU displays that indicate certain functions to
the operator. Certain symbols give a clue to the operator as to what is available
or if there is more information than is already displayed.
3. MCDU Operation and AIDS/
_
ACMS Menu Selection
The following symbols are used in the
displays:
< or >
If this symbol appears next to a LS (Line Select) key, it indicates that activating
that line select key will only cause the MCDU to display a different page (it is
the call-up of a page). The name of which is displayed besides the symbol.

* This symbol appears besides a LS key and indicates that activating the key
causes the activation of a function (it is the call-up of a function). The displayed
page may also change as a result. If the FDIMU needs some time to react,
during this time the star shall disappear to indicate to the user that the signal
was regis- tered by the FDIMU. As long as the star is absent, the appropriate
function cannot be activated.

,
One of these symbols appearing beside a LS key indicates that the operator
can press the key to select the line or data, without activating the function.

,
These arrows (up or down) indicate that vertical slewing is available. They
appear in columns 23 & 24 in the scratchpad.

This arrow, in column 24 of the title line, indicated that horizontal slewing is
available from this page. Activating the “ ” key (or “NEXT PAGE” key) will hori-
zontally slew the page.

3.4 MCDU DATA ENTRY

Data are entered into the computer through the keyboard. First the data are
entered from left to right into scratchpad by activating the alphanumeric keys
on the keyboard (similarly to a type-writer). Only 22 characters may be entered
into the scratchpad.
After entry of the data into the scratchpad, the data are moved from the
scratchpad into the correct data field by activating the adjacent LS key and the
scratchpad is blanked.

The FDIMU checks the data for format and acceptability (out of range, entry
not allowed into the field, etc…). If the data are incorrect, the system will leave
the previous data in the data field and display the associated message
indicating the error in the scratchpad. To enter the correct data, the operator
must do either of the following:

27 A320 Family Troubleshooting and programming guidelines - Ref.: SA31UG1302149 - September

2015
28 A320 Family Troubleshooting and programming guidelines - Ref.: SA31UG1302149 - September 2015

3. MCDU Operation and AIDS/

ACMS Menu Selection
_
1.Clear the message from the scratchpad by activating the CLR key. The data
that were incorrect will appear in the scratchpad. The operator can then
correct the data or clear it out.
2.Enter new data into the scratchpad. This automatically clears the message
being displayed and replaces the previous (incorrect) scratchpad data with
the new one.

If the entry was rejected because an incorrect LS key was activated, by

activating the correct LS key, the entry will be accepted.

3.5 MCDU DATA FIELD DISPLAY

Generally the data are displayed on two lines:

• The label line above the data line

• The data line next to LS key

On the data line there are five kinds of display:

1.Cyan if the data is already in the computer and the operator can modify it
2.Green data if the data is already in the computer but it cannot be modified
by
an operator entry
3.Cyan brackets ( [ ] ) if no value is defined and the operator can enter the data
4.Amber boxes ( ) if no value is defined and the data entry is
mandatory
for the correct functioning of the system or for the achievement of the
function described on the page or on the label line.
5.White dashes (----) if the field is filled by the computer but not yet available
due to lack of information or a computation has not yet been achieved
6.White crosses (XXXX) if the data is not received by computer or computation
not performed by computer due to inputs not received.

The entry format of data is described by the number of boxes or the place
occu- pied by the brackets and the spaces between brackets.

On one data line, several data may be displayed and entered: the different
fields are separated by a slash (“/”).

e.g: EQ/SYS/LAB/SDI

Two means are provided to the user for displaying a parameter received by
AIDS/ ACMS on A429 bus on MCDU screen:
• Alpha call-up
• Label call-up

1. ALPHA CALL-UP
Up to 400 parameters are provided with an alpha code which can be entered
on MCDU to display the parameters in engineering units. The alpha codes are
described in AMM 31-36-00 or into the Input Parameter List document
available through AIRBUSWORLD. The procedure is as follows:

1. Select AIDS on MCDU

2. Select “ALPHA” on AIDS initial
menu
3. Select “ALPHA MENU DISPLAY”
indication.
4. Enter the alpha code of the
desired parameter on the
scratchpad and depress 1LS key
on MCDU (arrow)

Up to 5 parameters can be
displayed at the same time. The
values are displayed in engineering
units and refreshed once per
second.

If parameters from two systems are

available, both values appear by
one call-up.
Unit is displayed below alpha
name. If value is displayed with:
1. “----“ : the value is received with
invalid SSM (NCD, FW or FT are
described in §4.2)
2. “XXXX” the value is not received
by FDIMU.

4. Real Time Parameter Read-Out

When a discrete word alpha call-up is
entered, the displayed value is the
state description (max 6 characters).
The display type is programmed
through AGSIV. Alpha characters,
binary, decimal, octal or hexadecimal
can be selected.

ALPHA LIST menu (1LS key on

ALPHA CALL-UP MENU) provides
the list of Alpha call-up programmed.

Note: If a selected parameter is not updated within 1 second, then the data items
described above are replaced by “X” characters until a new update is available.
4. Real Time Parameter Read-Out
The Operators can create Alpha call-up by customizing the database with
AGSIV or through the following MCDU procedure:

In the Alpha call-up menu:

- Enter with the alphanumeric

keys
5 character into the scratchpad and
push the LSK (2L) below SETUP
NAME indication. Does the entered
Setup Name exist in the stored Alpha
Menu Setups the content of this is
now activated. Otherwise a new
Setup Name is defined

- Store: Select the LSK adjacent to

STORE indication to save the Setup
Name with the contents.

- Delete: Select the LSK adjacent to

DELETE indication to erase the
Setup Name with the contents.

- Clear: Select the LSK adjacent to

CLEAR indication to clear all
parameters in current (selected/active)
Alpha Call-Up Setup.

Note: Alpha call-up list created through MCDU will be available until FDIMU power off.
Alpha call up list created through AGSIV will be permanent.

4. Real Time Parameter Read-Out

2. LABEL CALL-UP
Parameters, which are not programmed with an alpha code, can be however
selected if received by FDIMU A429 input busses. Refer to chapter 1 to see the
list of A429 bus input and chapter 4.5 for equipment and system codes.
These parameters can be selected using equipment number, source system,
label and SDI. Refer to Input Parameter List document (AIRBUSWORLD) for
description of available parameters (non-exhaustive list). The AMM also
provides some parameter lists in several ATA chapters.

The procedure is as follows:

1. Select AIDS on MCDU
2. Select “LABEL” on AIDS initial menu.
3. Select “DISPLAY” indication.
4. Enter the Parameter Label Call-up with
the alphanumeric keys in the format as
follows: EQ/SYS/LAB/SDI and optional
/ DATABITS and press LS key (see
arrow)

Note: refer to chapter 4.5 for EQ/SYS code

corresponding to connected computers.

Up to 2 parameters can be displayed at

the same time. The values of the selected
parameters are updated once per second.

The number of databits to be used for

decimal representation can be selected.
Valid entries are from 1 to 18. If this
number is omitted, the number 18 is used
as default value. These 18 data bits are
related to bits 28 to 11 of the selected
parameters. The bit 28 is always the
starting bit e.g. if 12 data bits are
entered, the bits 28 to 17 of the selected
parameter are taken into account.

The line below the parameter characteristic contains the label and the SDI of
the parameter found by the FDIMU on the A429 bus. In addition, the decimal
value of the selected data bits is indicated.
4. Real Time Parameter Read-Out
In the next data line, the SSM (Sign Status Matrix) bits (bits 29, 30 and 31) and
bits (bits 11 to 28) presentation of the selected parameters are displayed.
• SSM corresponding to bits 30 and 31 shall be read as follows:

SSM Type of data

Discrete (Booleans) Numerical (BNR)
Bit 31 Bit 30 Bit 31 Bit 30
NO (Normal Operation) 0 0 1 1
NCD (Non Computed Data) 0 1 0 1
FT (Functional Test) 1 0 1 0
FW (Failure Warning) 1 1 0 0

In comparison with Alpha call-up display, the non-validity of a parameter is

shown by SSM (NCD, FT or FW) and not by dashes (“----“).
• Bit 29 is usually used to sign the numerical data (set to “1” for negative
value, set to “0” for positive value).

If the data is displayed with white crosses (“XXXX”), then the parameter
corresponding to EQ/SYS/LAB/SDI is not received by FDIMU and can correspond
to:
• Source is not working (power-off, faulty…)
• The parameter is never transmitted on this bus

Note 1: In the scratchpad entry, the separation of EQ, SYS, LAB, SDI and DATABITS is
done by a slash (/)

Note 2: It is possible to enter a new parameter number partially. That means, if for a new
entry only the label changes, it is possible to enter for example «//345». In this case, the
previously entered data is used in the other data fields and label is changed to 345.

8. SAR Recording
Function
An integral part of the FDIMU is a Smart Access Recorder (SAR). Its function
is based on a non-volatile Solid State Mass Memory (SSMM) module which is
used to store flight data. Sophisticated data-compression algorithms ensure
efficient usage of the limited capacity of the SSMM.
For the purpose of data recording the FDIMU can provide 8 independent SAR
recording channels on the SSMM.

SAR data can be recorded into:

• FDIMU memory
• PCMCIA card if inserted before triggering

SAR data can be retrieved from:

• PDL
• MDDU (if installed)
• PCMCIA card (if installed)

SAR data recording can be started and stopped manually through MCDU or
automatically as per trigger logic programming.

The trigger logic programming is performed via Teledyne AGSIV.

For each recording channel a history buffer is provided to facilitate pre-event

recording. With the appropriate selection of the sampling rate and number of
parameters, the history buffer provides pre-event recording.

The SAR recording can be used for trouble-shooting and AIRBUS recommends
recording a maximum of 10 minutes to keep the integrity of the data.

8.2 SAR MANUAL TRIGGERING
It is possible to start or stop the recording of the SAR channel by manual
request via the MCDU. A menu on the MCDU provides selective Run/Stop
control for each SAR recording function. Manual start/stop control of the SAR
is not independent from the GSE programmed automatically trigger conditions.
It is not possible to start the SAR recording manually if automatically triggered
recording is active. In this case the recording continues until the automatically
stop trigger conditions become true. If an automatic start trigger becomes true
during manually triggered recording, recording continues until an automatic
stop trigger condition becomes true (regardless of the manual stop command).
Only channels (datasets) which have been programmed with the GSE and not
automatically running can be started.

The SAR can be manually started

as follows:
1.Select LSK adjacent to <SAR/
RECRDNG on AIDS initial menu
2.Select LSK adjacent to the
requested SAR to change the
start or stop the recording:

‘STOPPED’= the channel is

inactive neither manually or
