II. Reading Comprehension.
1. Read the article. Then choose True or False.
This year my wife and I decided to have a healthier lifestyle. Being so busy with work
and the kids, we unfortunately have many bad habits that we should change. We made several
decisions about what we should do and are looking forward to getting in better shape. Our
clothes don’t fit anymore, and we don’t want to buy larger clothes, so now is the best time to do
something about it.
First, we should start exercising regularly. There is a gym near our apartment building
that we plan to use every day. The gym has good exercise equipment for cycling and
weightlifting, and classes for yoga and Pilates.
My wife smokes a lot, so we agree that she should stop smoking. She also says that she
ought to stop watching so much television all day. While she is watching she eats a lot of junk
food. This is not good. Junk food always has a lot of sugar. I’m afraid that she is now
overweight. In fact, we both are.
A good thing for both of us too is to work on eating a balanced diet and drinking lots of
water. This should be easy since we love good food and like to cook at home. We live next door
to a health food market where we can shop for better food. This will help us with our diets that
we plan to go on immediately.
There are many other things that we hope to do as well. One of them is to get more sleep.
Doctors recommend getting eight hours of sleep every night. With our busy lives, this is difficult,
but maybe if we do this we will feel less stress. Another thing is to stop sunbathing so much. We
love going to the beach, but everyone knows that the sun can really damage your skin.
21. Doctors recommend getting from five to eight hours of sleep every night.
22. My wife watches television all day long.
23. According to the article, junk food has a lot of sugar.
24. The health food store is far away.
25. I am overweight.
2. Read the article and select the correct answer to the questions.
When you’re at a party with loud music and lots of people, it’s hard to have a
conversation. You can barely make out what the person right next to you is saying. So before
you go to your next party, here’s a little advice: play the piano.
How could playing the piano help? According to brain research, when we hear music,
parts of our brain become more active, including the part that processes language. Music may
make our brains work harder to recognize sound patterns. Musicians are better at this than non-
musicians. Their brains recognize the different sound waves of their instruments. They are good
at hearing and playing music even when there is a lot of background noise—people talking, a car
horn beeping, a phone ringing, etc.
In one scientific study, people who took music lessons were better at hearing sounds than
people with no music training. They could understand the sounds from conversations and songs
even when there was a lot of background noise. But for people with no music training, they
couldn’t hear as well once the background noise increased. There were too many sounds for their
brains to figure out.

Try the scientists’ advice: play the piano … or any other instrument. Take lessons and learn
something new, or pull out that old guitar from your closet. Playing music helps your brain work
better, and it could make the conversation at your next party a lot more interesting.
