Week 1 SELF CONCEPT AND ITS DYNAMICS
Objectives:
a. Explain what is self-concept and its dynamics.
b. Identify the truth about themselves.
c. Discuss the reason why he need to understand the true concept about
himself.
Self-concept is the image we have of ourselves. This image develops in

a number of ways, including through our interaction with important
people in our lives. Learn more about self-concept, including whether it
can be changed and a few theories related to self-identity and self-
perception.
What Is Self-Concept?
Self-concept is how we perceive our behaviors, abilities, and unique

characteristics.1 For example, beliefs such as "I am a good friend" or "I
am a kind person" are part of an overall self-concept.
Our self-perception is important because it affects

our motivations, attitudes, and behaviors. It also impacts how we feel
about the person we think we are, including whether we are competent
or if we have self-worth.2
Self-concept tends to be more malleable when we're younger and still

going through the process of self-discovery and identity formation. As
we age and learn who we are and what's important to us, these self-
perceptions become much more detailed and organized.
At its most basic, self-concept is a collection of beliefs one holds about

oneself and the responses of others. It embodies the answer to the
question: "Who am I?"
Rogers' Three Parts of Self-Concept

Humanist psychologist Carl Rogers believed that self-concept is made up
of three different parts:
Ideal self: The ideal self is the person you want to be. This person has
the attributes or qualities you are either working toward or want to
possess. It's who you envision yourself to be if you were exactly as you
wanted.
Self-image: Self-image refers to your nature. The natural you.
Self-esteem: How much you like, accept, and value yourself all
contribute to your self-concept in the form of self-esteem. Self-esteem
can be impacted by a number of factors—including how others see you,
how you think you compare to others, and your role in society.

What is self-concept and its dynamics?
Self-concepts are actively shaped based on one's experiences,

which means that they are dynamic. The self-concept can be seen as a
guidance system directing your behaviors to match up with your beliefs.

TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF
In order to discover the truth about yourself you must go back to where
you came from, who created you. You can never answer the question
who am I if you don’t have the true concept about yourself.
In order to discover who you are, to be sure that you have the true
concept about yourself go back to the one who created you. Return to
the one who created you in order to discover who you are and ensure
that you have a true understanding of yourself. Because we were all
made by God, only our creator can reveal us our true image. God has
given us the Manual of Life to guide us who we are.
“26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our
likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and
the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild
animals, and over all the creatures that move along the
ground.” Genesis 1:26. We were created according to the
image of our creator. Image does not refer to the physical
appearance but it means nature. It is very important to
understand who your creator is. Our creator is God and it is
natural for him to love. We always hear that God is love, it is
his nature to love, it is natural for him to forgive It is his
nature to love, to forgive. God is Sovereign, it means it is
natural for him to be faithful to do what he says. It means he
is trustworthy. We can trust his word, he is faithful to fulfill
his promise and that is natural for him because that is his
nature.
So if we are created in the image of our creator, it is also natural fo r us to

love, to forgive. It is also our nature to be trustworthy, to be faithful in
what we promise. It is natural for us to say the truth. It is natural for us
to do good. It is because we are created according to his image,
according to his nature. Therefore it is not our nature to hate, harbor
hatred in our hearts. It is not our nature to lie, to cheat, and to do
wickedness, those are not natural for us because we were all created in
God’s image. We must perceived our self according to God’s image. But
today most people don’t have the right concept about themselves
anymore because of the teachings they received, the culture where in
they live, the wrong beliefs they have about themselves. That’s why it is
very important to be guided accordingly.
REASONS WHY WE NEED TO DISCOVER OUR TRUE IMAGE
1. It is very important to understand our true image so that we will have

the right perspective about ourselves, we will have the right mindset
about our self. We will understand our true identity.
2. It is very important to understand our true image, so that we will

understand about our true nature. We will identify what is natural for us.
It natural for us to be honest, to be true, to be trustworthy, to forgive
and to do good. It is not natural for us to harbor hatred and refuse to
forgive. It is not natural for us to lie, to cheat and to do wickedness or
to do evil.
3. It is very important to understand our true image so that we will have

good values. Good values are product of understanding your true image
or your true nature.
4. It is very important to understand our true image, because it affects
our motivations, attitude, behavior and identity.
5. It is very important to understand our true image so that we will be

able to live a transparent life, maximize our true potentials and as a
result we will have contentment, satisfaction, peace and joy.
