Blocked-Rotor Test on a Three - Phase Induction Motor
AIM:
a) To perform the blocked rotor test on a 3-phase induction motor from rated current to zero amps in steps
and observe the active power, reactive power, and power factor.
b) To measure the effective resistance per phase of stator winding by using dc voltmeter and dc ammeter
method.
c) To determine the per phase quantities resistance and leakage reactance for both stator and rotor.
d) Determine the starting torque and maximum torque by using the equivalent circuit parameters and the
name plate details.

THEORY:
Blocked rotor test is similar to the short circuit test on a transformer. It is to be performed to calculate the
series parameters of the induction machine i.e., its leakage impedances. The rotor is blocked to prevent rotation
and balanced voltages are applied to the stator terminals at a voltage where the rated current is achieved. Under
the reduced voltage condition and rated current, core loss and magnetizing component of the current are quite
small percent of the total current. The slip for the blocked rotor test is unity since the rotor is stationary.
PROCEDURE
1) Connect the circuit as per the circuit diagram.
2) Make sure the rotor of the motor is blocked.
3) Switch on the supply and increase the input voltage till the current of the motor reaches to
its rated value.
4) Note down the reading of all meters.
5) Decrease the voltage to zero and switch off the supply.
