OCTOBER 2011 UOAA UPDATE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Well, the leaves are changing, the weather is getting a bit brisk and we are all starting to prepare for winter. And we in UOAA are looking forward to a new upcoming year with NEW projects and lots to offer to our members. Our Veterans Network has developed a sense of momentum and we have the people on board who will be our leaders and motivators to make this project a success. We have a cadre of veterans who are ready, willing and able to make the military contacts needed and who are eager to get other veterans involved. If there are veterans out there who would like to get involved with this program, PLEASE stand up and be counted and contact our office at 1-800-826-0826 to be directed to the appropriate people. We are already preparing for 2012 and are looking at developing a campaign designed to Defeat the Stigma of ostomy surgery. We have solicited bids from a variety of professional marketers and your Board of Directors will make a determination as to which campaign we will choose. We are hoping that our campaign will be an eye opening experience for the American public and we are ready to educate them as to HOW ostomates live and WHAT we are capable of doing. We are continuing to strengthen our relationships with other sister organizations like the United Ostomy Association of Canada and we have a reciprocity agreement with them. They are invited to attend our Conference and we will be attending theirs as well. We have already started formulating ideas regarding our next Conference to be held in August 2013 in Jacksonville, FL. There are BIG plans underway and we hope to have an enormous turnout at yet another NEW location for our Conference. As always, we are ready to hear from our ASGs and we encourage YOU to tell us what is going on in your area. What do you do that is successful? What issues or problems are you facing? Our role as the Board is to try to help you solve those issues and make your ASG as successful as it can possibly be. Finally I would like to extend my personal thanks along with those of the rest of the Board to one of our Board members who will be stepping down at year end Steve Strizic. Steve has been a Board member for many years and his insight and expertise regarding ASGs has been invaluable to us. He has dedicated himself to helping ASGs since he first started out. Even though he is leaving the Board, just like our Phoenix, we look for Steve to rise again within UOAA and continue to make great contributions to us. As always Id like to hear from all of you regarding how you think we in UOAA are doing. Comments and criticisms that are directed at making us a better organization are always welcome. I can be reached at 312-4663683 or by e-mail at [email protected] Sincerely, David B. Rudzin

AFFILIATION FEE INCREASE

After 6 years of holding down the Support Group affiliation fee we now find that a slight increase is necessary for 2012. In December each affiliated support group will be sent their 2012 annual invoice for affiliation and this will reflect the change. The new rate for 2012 is $2.50 per member (up from $2) and a flat $30 (up from $25) for those groups who declare 0 members. A small price to pay for services offered by UOAA. As you know these affiliation fees cover: The 800 number. The on-call WOCN. Our advocacy attorney. Our website. Our on-the-hill lobbyist, ensuring that your supplies continue to be covered by insurance and Medicare. National Conference. Leadership Workshops. Visitor Training. New Patient Guides. Any many other services that enhance the lives of people with ostomies, their caregivers and families.

BLUE STAR CHALLENGE

The National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable will be recognizing the UOAA for the most inspirational use of the Blue Star logo. This year Bob Baker, director of the UOAA, made a 3 month 3000 mile cross country bike ride called The Phoenix Tour. Bob had the Blue Star logo screen-printed onto his cycling shirt. While on his journey, he was asked many times the significance of this image and he was then able to tell his story. As you may know, Bob is a colon cancer survivor. This recognition will be made at the NCCRT Annual meeting on Nov 10th.

Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather, rake leaves and tune up the furnace! Sincerely, Dave
