A Detailed Lesson Plan in English 9

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;
A. Identify the speech styles in various context
B. Create a short conversations out of the given communication situations using
appropriate communication styles; and
C. Value the importance of communication style in real life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: Employ communicative style for various situations, (intimate, casual, formal,
consultative and frozen)
Reference:
Instructional materials: Manila paper, colored paper and ppt

III. PROCEDURES:

A. Preliminary activities Students will stand and begin the prayer.
1. Prayer
May I requesting everyone to please all stand for
the prayer. Who can lead the prayer?
2. Greetings
Good afternoon class, how are you today class? Good afternoon ma’am. We are fine ma’am.
That’s great!
3. Checking of attendance
Is everyone present today? No ma’am.
4. Classroom management
Before we start, kindly arrange your chairs and
set properly.
In this class I only have 3 rules. First, if somebody
is talking please listen carefully. Second, if you
have any questions and clarifications, please
raise your hands for you to be recognize. Last and
most important rules is to respect each other in
this four corners of our classroom.
Is my rules clear? Yes ma’am.
Very good!

B. Motivation
1. Activity
Before we start our lesson, let us first have a
short activity.
I will be calling three pairs of student in front.
Each student will read a dialogue that is
presented in the screen.
Are you guys ready? Yes ma’am .

( Start calling )

Alright. let’s start.

( Pair 1 starts reading a dialogue ) BF: Hi Baby


GF: Hi Honey
BF: I want to say something to you on this special
occasion of our anniversary.
GF: Really!
BF: Yes, I promise you, I’ll never stop trying. I’ll
never stop watching as you leave. I’ll never stop
loving you. I’ll never stop losing my breath when I
see you looking back at me. I’ll never stop
holding your hand in private and public. I’ll never
stop choosing you, baby. I’ll never get used to
you.
You are my world !!!
GF: How sweet… Iloveyou!

Let’s give a hand for pair number 1

(Pair 2 starts reading a dialogue ) Allan: Dude! Are you free on Friday night?
Ryan: What d’ya have in mind?
Allan: How about goin’ to the mall to see Star
Wars?
Ryan? I’d want to…but my parents…
Allan: Dude, c’mon! you’re what, 18 now?! Just
tell them you’re with me.
Ryan: Ok, I’ll try…but no promises, ok?
Allan: fine Dude. Just lemme know. Gotta go!

(Pair 3 starts reading a dialogue) Doctor: Hello! What can I do for you?
Patient: I am suffering from fever and sore throat
since yesterday.
Doctor: Have you taken any medicine so far?
Patient: No Doctor.
Doctor: let me check your temperature. Now the
fever is 45 degree Celsius.
Patient: Is there something serious Doctor?
Doctor: Don’t worry . Take the prescribed
medicines two times a day for 3 days and get
some rest.
Patient: Thank you very much Doctor.
Doctor: Welcome. Get well soon.

How do you find out? Because of the casual way they are speaking to
each other.

What about the third dialogue? What A doctor and a patient.

What kind of situation were they in? A patient is consulting to the doctor.

because our discussion for today is all about
them.

C. Lesson proper

Today, we are going to discuss about


communicative styles.

But before anything else, let us have first the


things that you need to achieve at the end of this
discussion.

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:


A. Identify the speech styles in various
context
B. Create a short conversations out of the
given communication situations using
appropriate communication styles; and
C. Value the importance of communication
style in real life situations.

To start lets define Communicative style.

Based from the definition of Martin Joos’ (1976),


it is the form of language that speaker uses which
characterized by the degree of formality for the
most formal to the least formal style.

It only means that the language, vocabulary and


level of formality you use differ depending on the
situation and the person you are talking to. Is Yes ma’am .
that clear?

For example, the words you use when you talk to


your friends are different when you talk to your
teacher. Same goes when you talk to you parents
and to your teacher. They differ depending on
the level of formality.

There are five different communicative style.

The first one in intimate communicative style.


Intimate communicative style is used by
participants who know each other very well or
share a very close relationship between Close
friends, siblings, husband and wife, parents and
children and boyfriend and girlfriend.
The participants in this style in this style do not
need for clear articulation of words or additional
explanations. They may use words of
endearment such babe, love, dear, honey as a
sign of intimacy.

The second communicative style is Casual


Communicative style.
It uses a language used between friends ,
peers , colleagues, or family. Most of the
ambience with this style is relaxed and very light.
And so, the participants may use group language
only group members can understand Jargon,
slang, or the vernacular language are used.

The third style is Consultative communicative


style.
This communicative style happens in a two- way
participation. It is used in semi-formal situations
in which speaker needs to provide background
information while the listener participates by
giving feedback. Thus, both speaker and Listener
are active participants. This style is often used or
in other professional situations, such as
conversations between a doctor and a patient, a
teacher and a student.

The fourth one is Formal Communicative style.


It is considered to be a formal straight forward
speech. There is no participation from the
listener. This style is often used in formal
situations where there is only one-way
communication such as speeches , television
newscast, giving announcement, etc.

The last is what we call the Frozen


Communicative style. It is the most formal style
and is received for very formal situations such as
weddings, religious, services or rituals, court
proceedings and other formal ceremonies. This
style is used to to address or is given to absolute
strangers. It uses prescribed and highly formal
language. In this style, Statements are learned by
heart.
Example:
Pledge of Allegiance and national Anthem.
It involves certain fixed statements that are never
changed.

D. Application
Let’s divide the class into three. Each group will
have to portray a certain communicative style.
Each group will select a representative to pick
their topic in a box.

Each group will create a dialogue based on your


assigned communicative style. Using your
members, create scenario that best support the
situations of your role play. Each group can used
any language they are comfortable with.

E. Generalization

What have you learned in our discussion for Ma’am we learned about the different
today? communicative styles. There are 5 styles of
communication varies depending on the
situation or the person you are talking to

What are these five communicative styles? Ma’am Intimate, Casual, Consultative, Formal
and Frozen.

F. Valuing

What is the importance of knowing the different It is very important to be aware of the different
communicative styles? communicative styles for us to be able to
communicate effectively. With that will be able to
adjust the level of formality and vocabulary
depending on the situation or the person we are
talking to.

Right! Communication helps us avoid conflicts


and solve problems. It is also important in
building friendship and healthy relationships.
