Lesson Objectives • the benefits of networking • basic cellular network • basic data network concepts concepts • how to obtain Internet service • how to obtain cellular service • broadband technologies and • how smart phones and tablets speeds connect to the Internet • LAN hardware and addressing • basic telephone network • Ethernet connections concepts • Wi-Fi connections and • how to configure and use wireless security voice mail
What is a Network? • A network is formed by connecting computers together • An internetwork is formed by connecting networks together • Network infrastructure is the hardware that supports networking and internetworking
Why Network? • Internet Connection Sharing • You can enable Internet connection sharing by creating a simple home network • All your devices can share a single Internet connection
Why Network? • About Streaming and Downloading • Downloading is the process of copying a file (any type of file) from a server on the Internet to your device • Streaming is the process of having a file delivered to your device in a constant and steady stream
Basic Network Technology • Networks transfer data in small units called packets • Data networks use TCP/IP as their networking protocol • LANs are private networks • WANs are public networks • Every computer that participates on a data network must have an IP address
Obtaining Internet Service • Service Providers include: • Phone/Mobile companies – DSL or FiOS • Cable TV providers – broadband cable • Satellite companies – satellite Internet
Obtaining Internet Service • Which Service Should You Use? • Cost • Availability • Desired speed Technology Speeds Pricing Comments DSL Up to 3Mbps $30-$50USD per month Not available in all areas
Cable Up to 30Mbps $30-$50USD per month Shared service
FiOS 3Mbps – 50Mbps $30-$100USD per month Not widely available Satellite 5Mbps – 15Mbps $50-$100USD per month Data allowance enforced by provider
Wired Connections - Ethernet • Ethernet Standards and Cables • Gigabit Ethernet moves data at 1Gbps • Fast Ethernet moves data at 100Mbps • 10Base-T Ethernet moves data at 10Mbps • Ethernet connections are recommended for transmitting important and sensitive data or high-volume streaming
Wired Connections - Ethernet • Network Interface Card (NIC) • Sends and receives data between your computer and the network • Includes an Ethernet port • Plug in the cable and you are good to go
Wired Connections - Ethernet • Adding a Shared Printer to the Wired LAN • Turn on file and printer sharing in the Control Panel • Select Share this printer in the Printer Properties dialog box
Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi • Wi-Fi gives us networking without wires • Most modern broadband routers can be used to set up a Wi-Fi network • A LAN that supports Wi-Fi is called a Wireless LAN (WLAN)
Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi • Adapters, Signals and Bands • Devices use wireless adapters to participate on a WLAN • WLANs use 2 different frequency bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz • WLAN signals weaken as they get farther away from the transmitter (the wireless access point)
Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi • Connecting Your Computer to a WLAN 1. Available wireless networks 2. Click a network to select it, 3. If the network is secured, display in a pop-up window and then click Connect to enter the passkey (network when you click the icon connect to the network security key)
Cellular Networks • Carry voice, text, and digital data over radio frequency (RF) signals • Cell towers are part of the network infrastructure • Each cellular network is divided into thousands of overlapping cells
Cellular Networks • Cellular Generations – All About the G’s • 3G – Third Generation • Up to 2Mbps, can surf Internet; minimum requirement for Smart Phone • 4G – Fourth Generation • 1Gbps or higher (stationary), 100Mbps while mobile; not available in truest form yet • LTE – Long Term Evolution • Speeds average 24Mbps
Obtaining Cell Service • Contract Services • Usually involve a 2-yeara commitment • May impose early termination fees • Usually provide the latest phones at reduced cost • Pre-Paid Services • Month-to-month • No credit check required • No overage fees
Cellular Service Plans • Talk – sending and receiving voice calls • Text – sending and receiving text messages (SMS) and picture and video messages (MMS) • Data – uploading and downloading information to and from the Internet, including app updates, notifications, GPS information, email messages, and streaming audio and streaming video • Plan Add-Ons – features such as international calling, theft and damage insurance, hotspot tethering
Cellular Devices • Smart Phones • Designed to keep you connected – 24/7 • Store significant amounts of personal and financial data • Basic Cell Phone • Designed to make and receive voice calls • Less expensive than smart phones and more durable • Cellular-Enabled Tablets • Can connect to a cellular network • Ideal for streaming movies and music
Cellular Devices • Mobile Data • Any time you download an app, check your email, surf the Internet or check Facebook, you use mobile data (unless you are connected to Wi- Fi) • Cell carriers allow only so much mobile data per month as dictated in the terms of your data plan • Exceeding the data limit can result in overage charges • Mobile data can be very expensive (even though it is the same data that you can access on Wi-Fi for no charge)
Hard-Wired Phones • Are connected to a telephone jack in the wall using a standard telephone line (copper wiring) • Connect to the telephone network • Are extremely reliable and provide excellent sound quality
Voice Mail • A centralized system for sending, storing, and retrieving audio messages • Each extension is linked to a voice mailbox • A caller can record a voice message if the line is not answered or is busy • The system will provide a notification that a new voice mail message is waiting
Voice Mail • Configuring Your Voice Mail • Your greeting message should include: • Your name, department, and company name • A brief apology that you cannot take a call right now • An invitation to leave a message • An indication of when the caller can expect a return call • Any additional options that might be available
Voice Mail • Leaving a Clear Voice Mail Message • Plan to include the following items in your voice mail message: • Identify yourself by first and last name, and if appropriate, state the name of your company • State the number at which you can be reached, and if appropriate, during which time frames; provide your email address if you are willing to accept a response via email • Mention the date and time you are calling • Briefly describe the nature and purpose of your call • Ask the person to call you back at their earliest convenience • Repeat the number at which you can be reached • Thank them for their time
Lesson Summary • the benefits of networking • basic cellular network • basic data network concepts concepts • how to obtain Internet service • how to obtain cellular service • broadband technologies and • how smart phones and tablets speeds connect to the Internet • LAN hardware and addressing • basic telephone network • Ethernet connections concepts • Wi-Fi connections and • how to configure and use wireless security voice mail
