FILM
Film, also called movie, motion
picture or moving picture, is a
visual art-form used to simulate
experiences that communicate
ideas, stories, perceptions,
feelings, beauty, or atmosphere
through the use of moving
images.

AUG 15, 1878: First Motion Picture

Comedy Film Genre
A comedy film is a category of film
which emphasizes humor. These
films are designed to make the
audience laugh through
amusement.
One of the oldest genres in film—

and derived from the classical
comedy in theatre—some of the
earliest silent films were comedies

slapstick
Slapstick traces its roots back to vaudeville and the stage, where actors perform
exaggerated physical stunts and gags. The term slapstick was taken from the wooden
sticks that clowns slapped together to promote audience applause.
SCREWBALL
Screwball comedies combine farce, slapstick, and the witty dialogue of more sophisticated
films. In general, they are light-hearted, frothy, often sophisticated, romantic stories,
commonly focusing on a battle of the sexes in which both co-protagonists try to outwit or
outmaneuver each other.

PARODY COMEDY
The idea of mocking or lampooning other forms of art is one of the most powerful forms
of comedy, as it allows audiences to both laugh and analyze preconceived notions about
the source of the ridicule.
BLACK COMEDY
Black comedy is a comedic style that makes fun out of ordinarily taboo subjects. These are
subjects we wouldn’t normally laugh at — situations like war, murder, and death. They take
on new life when re-examined through a comedic lens.

present, and clever plot twists usually
complicate the matter.
