Section 5.2, Right Triangle Ratios
Recall that, when dealing with right triangles, the following ratios apply:
opposite adjacent opposite
sin θ = , cos θ = , and tan θ =
hypotenuse hypotenuse adjacent
These ratios can be applied to any situation where a right triangle is known to exist. The ratio that is used
depends on which set of information is known. For example if the side opposite the known
angle is given and the side adjacent to the known angle is desired, then tangent would be the
appropriate choice.
If an angle is needed, then recall that the inverse functions may be used to find the angle. For example if
you know the side opposite an angle and the hypotenuse of the triangle, then sin -1 may be used to
find the angle.
When all the angles of a triangle are found, you can check your solution by making sure that they total
180 . When all of the sides of a right triangle are found, the Pythagorean theorem can be used to
check your solutions.

Homework:
Solve the given triangles by giving all the missing sides and angles. Assume that angle C in all of the
questions is a right angle. Round all of your answers to the nearest hundredth, where applicable.
4. B = 15o and b = 21 m
5. B = 62o and a = 29 cm
6. a = 15 m and c = 25 m
7. a = 11 m and b = 21 m
Solve the following. Round all answers to the nearest hundredth where applicable.
9. The angle of depression from the top of a tower down to a point on the ground 150 feet away from
the base of the tower is 38 . How tall is the tower?
10. From a point on the floor, the angle of elevation to the top of a 7-foot tall doorway is 55 . How
far from the doorway is the point on the floor?
11. The distance from base to base on a regulation baseball diamond is 90 feet. If the baselines are at
right angles to each other (creating a square), how far is it from home plate to second base?
12. From a point on the fourth floor of a building, the angle of elevation to the top of a building across
the street is 40 . The angle of depression to the foot of the building across the street is 50 . How
tall is the building across the street?
13. If the angle of elevation from a point on the floor that is 11 feet from a doorway to the top of the
doorway is 32 , and the angle of elevation from the same point to the ceiling above the doorway
is 53 , how tall is the ceiling?
