Print the vocabulary quiz for each student. Distribute a vocabulary quiz to each student.
They should complete the quiz independently. Since this is not a comprehension or
decoding assessment, you may read the test to students as needed. This helps assess
the knowledge of the vocabulary word, and not decoding skills.
The vocabulary quizzes are labeled at the bottom of each page with the grade, unit, and
week.
Directions:
This product contains 2 sets of cootie catchers. The first ones require the students to
state the definition. The second set requires the student to utilize the word in a real life
situation. For example, the task for the word “loan” asks your student to tell why a
person would need a loan. Since all these questions are open ended, there is not an
answer key for the cootie catchers.
Print the cootie catchers for each pair of students. You may wish to print one for each
student to eliminate any possession battles. :). The folding directions are included. Print or
project them for students who do not yet know how to fold them.
The cootie catchers are labeled at the top of each page with the grade, unit, and week.

Rationale:
Word sorting activities help students build new knowledge by accessing previous
knowledge. Sorts help students organize their schema by putting the newly learned
words into the correct filing cabinet drawer in their brain.
The publisher does not provide sorting cards for all three levels of words each week.
These sorts allow you to differentiate your spelling groups. There are sorts for every
approaching, on level and beyond word list. The lists also include the bonus words.
Directions:
Simply, print and go. Print the spelling sorting cards for each student.
There are sorting activities specifically designed to be used with the weekly words. The
sorting cards and activities can be used for classwork, homework, or a spelling center.
Answer keys are included for your convenience.
The weekly sorts are labeled at the top of each page with the grade, unit, week, and level.
Rationale:
Word sorting activities help students build new knowledge by accessing previous
knowledge. Sorts help students organize their schema by putting the newly learned
words into the correct filing cabinet drawer in their brain.
The sorting actives are designed so that the same sorting activity can be used with all
three levels of words, approaching, on level, and beyond. You will not spend any more time
in front of the copier than absolutely necessary. This product allows you to print the
same packet for each student regardless of their level of weekly spelling words.
Directions:
Simply, print and go. Print the weekly activities double sided to save paper. They can be
used for classwork, homework, or a spelling center. There are 4 different activities for
each week. The activities also vary week to week. Answer keys for all 3 levels are
provided for your convenience. You can even add these to a spelling center so students
may self correct their work.
Also available are the spelling sorting cards for all three levels. Print these for each
student to assist them with the sorting activities.
The weekly activities are labeled at the bottom of each page with the grade, unit, week,
and level.

Rationale:
These tests allow you to give differentiated spelling lists to your students without consuming a
lot of instructional time. Administering 3 separate spelling tests each week can be a struggle.
These tests provide an easier way. Now, you will able to assess differentiated lists of words, using
less instructional minutes administering three tests, than you did administering one!
You may ask, Why multiple choice tests? Isn’t this a lower level of mastery as compared to the
traditional, orally administered spelling tests? Think about what you do when you can’t
remember how to spell a word? Chances are good that you either write or type the word to the
best of your ability. From there, spelling check software on the computer underlines the word
with that red squiggly line and offers suggestions. Or, your brain shoots up red flags and starts
scanning the neurons for alternative spellings. Then, you make adjustments. A perfect example is
the word “field”. When I have to complete field trip paperwork and write the word “field”, I
frequently reverse the medial vowel sequence. It isn’t until I view the word, that I recognize the
error and correct it. Our students do this too. They recognize their error and try different
spellings until they recognize a correct one. Multiple choice spelling tests match what we do in real
life (and the end of year high stakes tests).
Did you know, “The English language has 1,100 different ways to spell its 44 distinct sounds, more
than any other language “ (Brockway, 2014). Many students ride the struggle bus during spelling
because of the numerous ways to spell all those sounds. In 2006, Wallace, conducted research on
best spelling practices. He concluded that appropriately leveled weekly spelling tests that
students can correct themselves are beneficial. This product offers you the opportunity to
quickly and easily meet this criteria. You can differentiate the spelling lists in your classroom and
provide a pre/post test that students can correct themselves without draining precious minutes
from your literacy block.
Special bonus… You will no longer need to decipher incorrectly formed letters to decide if the
word is spelled correctly or not. Students mark the box of the correctly spelled word.
Directions:
Simply, print and go. Print the test, double sided to save paper, that corresponds with the level
of words you have assigned to your students. Distribute the tests to the students. They will
complete the test independently.
Tests are labeled at the bottom of each page with the grade, unit, week, and level.
