Australia s Defense Policy
This essay will reason that in a more contested Asia Pacific strategic environment,
Australia will not need to develop a more independent strategic and defence policy, but
should reduce reliance on its United States ally. The Asia Pacific region is continuously
undergoing great economic growth and development and many countries are enjoying
the benefits derived from it, including Australia. On the other hand, the world is seeing a
rise of military and economic powerhouses in the region, most notably China. This topic
is critical for academics and policymakers to understand the implications of the contested
environment and how to deal effectively with all the consequences that could undermine
the region s prosperity, peace, and stability.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to take into account that no country s defence is totally self sufficient
(McLennan 2002). Australia will be unable to have an absolute independent defence
policy, due to the multifaceted and reliant nature of modern society. States can only
sustain some control and relative independence through channels such as collective
action. By looking at Australia s defence paper in history it shows that since the end of
the Vietnam War, Australia has created a defence policy with the foreground on self
reliance, the capability to protect Australia without allied fighting arms. The concept of
self reliance emerged from worries when the United States did not come to support the
conflict with Indonesia (Fruhling 2014). The 1967 Australian Defence White Paper
was the first paper that focused on the concept of self reliance as main policy idea
(Fruhling 2014). The core concept of self reliance entailed Australia to pursue a
defence force that was capable of independent action to achieve broader foreign policy
objectives. However, the notion of self reliance was changed when the 2013 White
Paper was released. It underlined the importance of self reliance within the context of
our Alliance with the United States and our cooperation with other countries in the
region to deal with the challenges emerging from the Indo Pacific (Fruhling 2014). The
notion of self reliance was reinterpreted in a way that mismatched with the prior notion
of self reliance. The change in language shows that there are many factors that show that
there are little reasons for Australia to create self reliant operations in the defence of
Australia. These reasons are, but not inclusive, Indonesia is no longer a threat, Australia
s isolated location allows it to be distant from the main foci of tension and possible
future conflict, no states will be able to
Examples Of Scapegoat In The Lottery
Scapegoat: A Necessary Convenience of Society
Shirley Jackson s The Lottery shows society s avoidance of change, need for a
scapegoat. Each year people are given a chance to start over. An opportunity to set
goals to live healthy, go back to school, save money, and advance in a current career.
With goals comes change, and change is a challenge not often welcomed in many.
Excuses, a personal scapegoat are made to avoid sticking to the change. Mark Twain took
a look at New Year s, as an annual example of promises to oneself, only to find failure
even before the first 30 days are complete. Twain stated, New Year s is a harmless
annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for ... Show more

It has been present since the beginning of time. Misunderstanding and fear often leads
to conditions where scapegoats are used. People don t often seem to care about the
complexities of the world around them. Instead they want easy answers to problems and
a scapegoat is always a convenient out. In The Lottery we find that the ritual had become
so mundane that Tessie Hutchinson had forgotten the lottery itself. She was late, felt the
drawing was unfair because it was hurried and ultimately became the town s scapegoat
by virtue of the draw. As people move throughout life, hopefully they will remember that
convenience is easy. Avoiding change and finding blame with anything is easy. It s also
just as easy to become a
What Is The Signs Of Signification In The Loves Of Lady...
The focal character of this Angela Carter short story is the life measure manikin of a
prostitute, who transforms into fragile living creature and wreaks ruin on the
surroundings and human world.
The puppet master is always dusted with a little darkness. In direct relation to his skill
he propagates the most bewildering enigmas for, the more lifelike his marionettes, the
more godlike his manipulations and the more radical the symbiosis between inarticulate
doll and articulating fingers. The puppeteer speculates in a no mans limbo between the
real and that which, although we know very well it is not, nevertheless seems to be real.
He is the intermediary between us, his audience, the living, and they, the dolls, the
undead, who cannot live at all and yet who mimic the living in every detail since, though
they cannot speak or weep, still they project those signals of signification we instantly
recognize as language.
This second section taken from Angela Carter s short story, The Loves of Lady Purple,
with its utilization of the comprehensive we and the power of speculative discourse (
signs of signification ) peruses as a solicitation to a metatextual reading of the story, this

It is conceivable to see such discourses about appropriate and improper sexuality in the
portrayal of vampires in old stories and in writing. These creatures generally symbolize
transgressive sexuality. The sucking of blood suggests pictures of arbitrary and lustful
sex and the vampirization of people infers moral and biological
contamination.[2]Generally, vampires have exemplified the dread of subversion of the
social tenets, representing in this sense examples of conduct to be evaded. However, in
the meantime, vampires have been raising the want of individuals who personally ache
for freedom (particularly sexual) and
Weddings In The Elizabethan Era
Elizabethan Era Wedding Traditions Romeo and Juliet did not have a public wedding
do you think they still have public weddings in the Elizabethan era or were all of them
private? Queen Elizabeth was the queen of England during the Elizabethan era, and
people depict this time as the golden age of England. William Shakespeare lived and
based most of his plays on this time era from 1558 to 1603. In the Elizabethan erathe
weddings consisted of big wedding receptions and exotic dishes. The time of the 1558
to 1603 era receptions of weddings were a tradition for people to have, and everyone in
the community was invited ( Elizabethan wedding customs ). This was a custom for them
because of the small communities they lived in back then. Whereas
Examples Of Beware The Toils Of War In The Iliad
In the words of Homer, who wrote two epic poems which are famous works in ancient
Greek literature states, Beware the toils of war...the mesh of the huge dragnet
sweeping up the world. The first part of this quote which says beware the toils of war,
this means beware the hard and continuous work of war. I believe this pertains to the
dark ages because the Dark Age is when the Dorian s were transitioning from the
bronze ages to the iron ages. The iron ages this was predominately about hatred and at
war constantly. The second part of the quote which says the mesh of the huge dragnet
sweeping up the world, which means the mesh of the huge game or food in a big net,
is sweeping up the world. For me personally I believe this pertains to the Greek
civilization of the Mycenaeans basically losing their civilization which was being
swept away from the Dorian s and losing their identity which I will talk about later.
Therefore, I will be going into further detail about Greek civilization, the dark ages and
what was lost, and homers the Iliad. The Greek Civilization was a mystery about the
origin of the Greeks which is unknown. However, we were able to indicate from their
language which uncovered they belonged to the Indo European language. The Greeks
were a blend of native tribes and Indo European raiders. From tracing back the culture of
Greeks, which was found of two earlier cultures named the Minoans and the Mycenaean
s. Speaking of the Minoans, they thrived in the 2nd millennium
Investigating the Water Potential of Potato Cells
Investigating the Water Potential Of Potato Cells Aims 1. To test how water potential,
in a solution, affects the movement of water in and out of a cell by osmosis Prediction
I predict that by increasing the water potential around the outside of the potato cell,
(i.e. so that the water potential is greater outside the cell compared to the inside of the
cell e.g. 0m sucrose) that the net movement of water into the cell will increase. This is
due to the water potential being greater outside the cell compared to the inside of the
cell, therefore water will diffuse into the cell by a process of osmosis. The opposite
however will occur when the water potential outside the cell is lower than that inside the
cell (i.e. with hypotonic solutions,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I can do this by following two steps.(1). Firstly I can work out the concentration of
sucrose in the

potato by reading of my graph were the %change in mass is 0, as this shows that at this
point there is no net movement of water hence the two areas have equal solute potentials.
(In this case the morality of the potato is 0.14m.) (2). I can then use this to work out the
solute potential of the potato by using the below graph, which was made from
information from data sheets, showing the solute potential at different moralities. The
graph shows that as you increase the sucrose concentration of the solution surrounding a
potato,(hence making the solution Hypotonic)that the net movement of water out of the
cell increase. This is represented by the downwards sloping curve of the graph and is
due to the increased solute potential of the surroundings meaning that there is more
solute in the solution; hence more solutes form bonds with water molecules meaning
that the water molecules are no longer free to move or they move more slowly. As a
result of this the water enters the solute solution faster than water leaves the solute i.e.
there is a net water movement out of the cell through the (permeable) membrane . This is
not true however before 0.14m concentration of solution as the solute concentration is
greater in the cell and therefore water enters the cell by a process of
