INTRODUCTION
▪ Roundabout is a circular intersection where
road traffic is permitted to flow in one
direction around a central island
▪ In older traffic circles, traffic signals or
stop signs used to reduce potential crashes
▪ Potential relative speeds considerably lower
for a well-designed roundabout than other
types of intersections
▪ A well-designed roundabout is the safest
type of intersection
3
SAFETY ASPECTS
▪ The tight circle of a roundabout forces drivers to slow down, and the
most severe types of intersection crashes
▪ Roundabouts improve traffic flow and are better for the environment
▪ Roundabouts are safer for drivers and pedestrians than older-style traffic
circles and intersections
▪ Modern roundabouts experience 39% fewer vehicle collisions, 76%
fewer injuries and 90% fewer serious injuries and fatalities
▪ Roundabouts virtually eliminate crashes

4
WHY ACCIDENTS ?
▪ Roundabout with little entry curvature results
in high speeds through the roundabout
▪ Roundabouts consist of a number of
relatively small radii horizontal curves for
each travelled path
▪ Drivers travel on these curves with quite
high speed, involve out-of-control vehicles
as the side friction decreases
▪ Road side hazards common at roundabouts
include light and power poles, large trees and
sign supports etc. 5
CASE STUDY; CHINNAKADA
ROUNDABOUT
▪ Kollam (past Quilon) is a district in the
southern region of Kerala, found 70 km north
of the state's capital Thiruvananthapuram
▪ Chinnakada is the Central Business District
(CBD), of Kollam city
▪ Chinnakada is lying in the Coordinates:
8°53’13.5” N, 76°35’26.47” E
▪ Chinnakada is a busy junction where 5 city
roads and one National highway interconnect
at a traffic roundabout
6
Continue…
▪ Two National Highways pass through Kollam city:
1) National Highway 66 (NH-47) from Salem to Kanyakumari cuts
across the city north to south
2) NH-66 connects the city with other cities such as
Thiruvananthapuram in the south, Aleppy and Kochi in the north
▪ NH 47 is being major corridors with high inter-city vehicular traffic
entering / leaving the city
▪ Average width of the road varies from 12m-30 m while carriageway is
about 8-15 m
▪ It has a length of 7 km, road density is about 1.1 km /1000 persons.

CONTROL MEASURE
▪ The potential relative speed of entering and
circulating vehicles should be limited to 40
km/h
Potential Relative Speed can be Reduced by:
✓ Reducing the entry curve radius
✓ Providing a smaller radius entry curve on the
preceding approach arm
✓ Providing greater deflection through the
roundabout
✓ Increasing the central island diameter
✓ Providing more separation between arms
11
✓ Decreasing the entry and exit widths
BENEFITS
▪ Roundabouts are appropriate at high-crash locations and intersections
with large traffic delays, complex geometry, frequent left-turn
movements, and relatively balanced traffic flows
▪ They also reduce delays and queue lengths
▪ They require less space on the approaching roads than intersections
with stop signs or traffic signals
▪ Maintenance usually is cheaper than for intersections with signals
▪ The service life of a roundabout is significantly longer, approximately
25 years, compared with 10 years for a typical traffic signal

12
CONCLUSION
▪ Roundabouts are a safer alternative to traffic
signals and stop signs
▪ They accommodate all sizes and types of
vehicles as well as motorized modes of
movement
▪ Roundabouts are a safer and more efficient
alternative to traditional traffic circles
