Life Science
SECOND QUARTER

REVIEWER
Panspermia
is the idea that seeds of life
were scattered in the Universe
and that life was seeded on
Earth from outer space.
The idea that frogs arise
from mud is an example of
spontaneous generation.
The purpose of the
Miller-Urey experiment is
to test if biological molecules could
have been created by lightning.
Oxygen was scarce during the
early development of Earth.
Anaerobic organism
existed during this period.
Photosynthesis of plants,
algae, and bacteria
is the primary source of
oxygen which is present
in our atmosphere.
Whether or not the cell carries
out cellular metabolism
tells you whether a cell
is prokaryotic or
eukaryotic.
When the sunflower bends
its stalk to follow the rays of
the sun, the characteristic
of life shown is the
response to stimuli.
A duck egg hatches into a
duckling and grows up to be
an egg-laying mature duck is
an example of
growth and development.
Camouflage is the ability of
some animals to change color
and body structure in order to
blend with their environment.
This characteristic is called
adaptation.
Diversity and unity
explains that DNA unifies the
diverse forms of living organisms,
and all living organisms possess a
unique inheritable genetic material
(DNA) inside their cells.
cell - nucleus - chromosome
- DNA - gene
is the right order of the
sequence.
Changes that happen in the
living organism in the present
time and how they relate to
ancient times are due to
evolution.
Sexual reproduction
offspring shows variations
and are not an exact
copy of the parents.
Parthenogenesis
is a modified process of
sexual reproduction which
gives rise to complete
offspring from unfertilized
eggs.
Flatworms split at a particular
joint and the two fragments
regenerate the missing organs
and tissue. This type of asexual
reproduction is called
fragmentation.
Gametes
refers to the collective
term for sperm and
egg cells.
The primary goal of
sexual reproduction is
fertilization of
an egg.
When the egg hatch within the
mother, the offspring stays
within the mother for some time,
eating unfertilized eggs in the
womb for nourishment. This type
of internal fertilization is called
ovoviviparity.
Lack of diversity
is the greatest disadvantage
of asexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction in animals
produces offspring
which are identical
to the parents.
Recombinant DNA
is the process of genetic
engineering that is aimed at
improving health conditions
such as in the production of
vaccines.
Genetic Engineering
is the process that allows a specific
gene from one organism to be
transferred into the DNA of another
organism.
The most important function
of genetic engineering is
to produce improved or
novel products organisms
and organic.
Bacteria
is the most commonly
used host organism in
recombinant DNA technology.
Insulin
is the first genetically
engineered medical product
that is used for the treatment
for diabetes.
Food and
Drug Administration
is the government agency
that assesses the safety of
genetically engineered food
currently in the Philippines.
Bioethics
is the term used for the
ethical implications and
applications of genetic
engineering.
The third line of defense
creates a highly specific
and effective response to
an infectious agent.
Hormone
is a chemical signal produced in
the body that controls and
regulates the activity of certain
cells or organs and also helps
animals to maintain homeostasis
and regulate reproduction and
development.
Primitive animals like
sponges and hydra
have no
circulatory system.
Appendix is an organ
that belongs to

Digestive System.
Small intestine
is where most of the
nutrient absorption take
place during digestion.
Respiratory System
is the body system
that is directly affected
by pneumonia.
Excretory System
filters out wastes, toxins, and
excess in the circulatory
system.
Nervous System
is made up of specialized
cells that can be compared
to an electrical wire which
transmits signal from one
place to another.
The exchange of respiratory
gases between the external
environment and the organism's
body or cell is called
respiration.
The role of the nervous
system in catching a
baseball is
it tells arm muscles
to contract.
In simple animals like the
sponges (Porifera) and hydra
(Cnidaria), oxygen and
carbon dioxide exchange
happen in the cells on their

body surface.
Alfred Russel Wallace
explains how the mechanisms
of evolution might have
occurred in almost identical to
Charles Darwin.
Monera
is the most primitive
group of living organisms
giving rise to the Protista.
Good luck and
God bless!
