BEED1 SECTION1

Task to be done

SELF-ASSESSMENT

Direction: Explain the following questions in at least 200 words. (5 pts each)

1. What is history? Why study history?

The word "history" has several meanings. It can mean everything that's ever happened in the
past. This is not very useful, however, because, until we get a time machine, we cannot know
everything that happened. Thus a second definition: history as the written record of what
happened in the past or put another way, history is what historians write. But historians usually
refer to their own body of writing as historiography, not history. History is one of the most
important academic pursuits of any child’s education. Here, we outline the importance of
learning history and reveal study tips for pupils. History is one of the most respected and most
valuable academic subjects your child will learn. This guide takes a deep dive into the
importance of learning history at school, plus a few tips for studying it effectively. Through
history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures and
technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed. The rich history of the
world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today. History is full of stories.
Some are inspiring and uplifting; others are chaotic and immoral. Tap into the vivid realm of
history, and there are many vital lessons your child needs to learn. They will study times of
suffering and times of joy, and the lessons they learn here can then be applied to their own life
experience.

2. Differentiate primary and secondary sources of history.

Primary sources are firsthand, contemporary accounts of events created by individuals

during that period of time or several years later (such as correspondence, diaries, memoirs and
personal histories). These original records can be found in several media such as print, artwork,
and audio and visual recording. Examples of primary sources include manuscripts, newspapers,
speeches, cartoons, photographs, video, and artifacts. Primary sources can be described as those
sources that are closest to the origin of the information. They contain raw information and thus,
must be interpreted by researchers. Secondary sources are closely related to primary sources and
often interpret them. These sources are documents that relate to information that originated
elsewhere. Secondary sources often use generalizations, analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of
primary sources. Examples of secondary sources include textbooks, articles, and reference
books. Primary sources were either created during the time period being studied or were created
at a later date by a participant in the events being studied (as in the case of memoirs). They
reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant or observer. Primary sources enable the
researcher to get as close as possible to what actually happened during an historical event or
time period
A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or phenomenon. It is
generally at least one step removed from the event is often based on primary sources. Examples
include: scholarly or popular books and articles, reference books, and textbooks.

3. What are the roles of historians?

A historian has the fascinating job of studying and interpreting the past. When people
need detailed, nuanced information about the past, they go to historians to get the facts. These
individuals write history books about all kinds of topics, times, people, and places. From ancient
history, to a specific decade, to even one specific historical event, historians will study and fact-
find in order to share that information with the public. Historians are academics and researchers
who study events of the past. Their primary duties include obtaining historical data from
libraries, archives and artifacts, determining the authenticity of historical data and teaching or
researching at universities. Professional historians spend their lives pursuing the meaning of the
past for the present." Everything that exists in today's world has some origin coming from the
past. Everything that exists today and seems to be unique of its time has some basis from the
past. It is a known fact that history has a tendency of repeating itself, and so to prepare us for the
future we need to understand the past. History can give a person an answer to almost everything
that is going on in the present, with what we call a historical investigation.
