SELECTION OF CONVEYOR SIZE AND SPEED :

For Screw conveyors having regular helical flights all of standard pitch, the conveyor speed may be calculated by formula :

For calculation of conveyor speeds where special types of screws are used, such as short pitch, cut flights , cut and folded fligh

Lump Size Limitations :

The size of screw conveyor not only depends on the capacity required, but also on the size and proportion of lumps in the mat

Three classes of lumps apply as follows :

Class 1 : A mixture of lumps and fines in which not more than 10% lumps ranging from max to one half of the m
Class 2 : A mixture of lumps and fines in which not more than 25% lumps ranging from max to one half of the m
Class 3 : A mixture of lumps and fines in which not more than 95% lumps ranging from max to one half of the m

Torsional ratings of screw conveyor parts :
For more information refer to appendix
If coupling bolt shear is limiting torsional rating, high strength bolts may be substituted.
Screw conveyors are limited in overall length by amount of torque that can be safely transmitted through the pipes and coupli
Table 3-5 combines various torsional ratings of all the stressed parts of standard conveyor screws.

Screw Conveyor End Thrust :
Conveyor Screw Deflection :
Deflection of screw for standard length is not usually a problem.
However if longer than standard sections of screw are to be used, without intermediate hanger bearings
Care should be taken to prevent screw flights from contacting the trough because of excessive deflection.

Application of screw conveyors in which the deflection of screw exceeds 0.25" should be referred to manufacturer for deflecti
Very often problem can be solved by using a conveyor screw section with a heavy schedule pipe or with a larger diameter p
Typical horizontal screw conveyor problem :

Problem :
Input data :
Material = portland cement
Rate ( capacity ) = 1000 ft3/hr
Distance of convey 30 ft

STEPS :

1) Find material data : From Table 2-2

Name = Portland cement aerated portland cement

Density of Material = 60 to 75 94
Code = 68A10016M 94A10026M
Component series = 2D 2D
Material Factor Fm = 1.4 1.4

2) Find Required Volumetric capacity of conveyor =

As this material conveyed density of material decreases but this material is provided to conveyor with its highest density
So we should find required capacity of conveyor considering lowest density.
Rate = 1000 From input data
lowest density = 60 lb/ft3
Highest density = 95 lb/ft3
Discharge to conveyor
95000 lbs/hr
=
Required Volumetric capacity = 1583.33333333333 ft3/hr

3) Find Equivalent data from screw conveyor capacities table (TABLE -2-3)

Material Class code = A16 As aerated cement is conveyed

As at max RPM capacity required is greater than 1400 capcity in table
Screw Dia = 18 in
Max RPM = 45
Capacity at max rpm = 2025 ft3/hr
To handle required Volumetric capacity = 1583.33333333333
Speed = 35.1851851851852 RPM actual operating speed

4) Decide to consider lump size or not.

Because the cement is fine powder there is no lump size to consider and make allowance for.

5) Check for type of Flight :

In this case :
screw can be designed as standard screw or full pitch.
Full speed is already considered when operating speed is calculated.

Flight Factor Ff from table 3-3 for standard full pitch at 30% loading is 1.0.
There is no mixing requirement no paddles needed; hence, the paddle factor, fp, is 1.0.

6) Find required data frpm table 2-8 :

Screw dia = 18 in
Coupling Size = 3 in
Screw Number = 18S616
Trough Thickness = 3 / 16 in
Cover = 12 ga

Now based on Screw Number given refer to ANSI/CEMA Standard No. 300, "Screw Conveyor Dimensional Standards" and find

Pipe size = 3-1/2 shedule 40

Section length = 11'9''
Flight Thickness = 1/4

7) Find Bearing type and max recommended RPM from Table 2-6 :

Material code size = A

Abrasiveness Code No. = 6
Component series = 2D
Bearing Selected = Hard Iron Bearings

From paragraph D the max recommended operating RPM

Here Shaft Diameter is Coupling size.

N= 40 RPM Maximum recommended

Choosen operating speed 35 RPM is less than 40 RPM and can be used.

8) Find overall conveyor length :

The overall conveyor length must be greater than the 30' 0''distance between the centers of the feed chute and bin.
Use 3 standard conveyor trough sections each 12' long, making the total length of scerw conveyor :

L = 3 X 12 = 36'

9) Find horsepower :

First find all factors required in horsepower calculations :

Fb = 4.4
Fd = 3-2

The sum of Hpm and Hpf is 0.75 + 4.8 = 5.55

Find Fo from fig 3.1

Fo = 1.0

Therefore calculated horsepower is no longer tentative but final.

Now select motor horsepower

It is necessary to know the drive efficiency

Assume drive will be double reduction helical gar box
and screw is driven by v belt
From table 8-1, in chapter 8, the efficiency of the gerbox is 0.94 and v belt drive is 0.94.
Hence overall efficency is 0.94 x 0.94 = 0.885
The motor horsepower therefore may not be less than :

The nearest motor size is 7-1/2 hp and this is the motor use.

10) Check if the conveyor couplings and pipe ascertain whether their horsepower ratings are adequate to handle the full moto

11) Select/ Decide Thrust Bearing :

12) Check for screw conveyor deflection :

As the sections of screw conveyor are standard length, it may not be necessary to check the screw deflection. Were any of the
