Effective management information systems (MIS) are often not utilized to their full potential in
decision-making processes within organizations. The author highlights the problem of
ineffective decision-making resulting from poor MIS. The author argues that MIS plays a
crucial role in providing the necessary information foundation for management and
leadership to make informed decisions. Inadequate or poorly managed MIS can have a
detrimental impact on decision-making. As stated by the author, "inefficient efficiency is
caused by the lack of effective management information systems." The author also
emphasizes the critical nature of this issue, as the quality of organizational decision-making is
directly proportional to the timeliness, accuracy, and quality of the information available. Poor
MIS undermines decision-making by failing to provide high-quality information.
The goals of the present study are multifold. Firstly, it seeks to scrutinize the connection
between telecommunications and decision-making within organizations. Secondly, it
endeavors to probe the nexus between computer software and decision-making. Lastly, it
aspires to investigate the nexus between computer hardware and decision-making. This study
is designed to assess the relationship between the aforementioned components of
management information systems with organizational decision-making. It aims to determine
whether these technical system components have a significant bearing on the quality of
decisions made within organizations.
The literature review in this study covers various important aspects of management
information systems (MIS) and organizational decision-making. One of the primary areas of
focus is the background of MIS, which includes definitions and explanations of different types
of systems such as decision support systems (DSS), executive information systems (EIS), and
more (Al-Zhrani, 2010). Key points made are that MIS involves computerized systems
designed to collect, store, process, and disseminate information to managers, and specific
types like DSS directly assist decision-making through models and analytics. Furthermore,
extensive literature has explored the relationship between MIS and decision-making. For
instance, Jahangir (2005) emphasized the importance of high-quality information for decision-
making, and Kumar (2006) highlighted how MIS provides the necessary infrastructure for
making sound decisions. Theoretical frameworks are also reviewed, including the economic
authority theory, which examines the differences between public and private sectors, and
political authority theory, which covers the legal and constitutional structures that affect
public organizations.
The author conducted an empirical study to investigate the relationship between key
components of management information systems (MIS) and decision-making in
organizations. The study focused on the telecommunications, computer software, and
computer hardware aspects of MIS and their connection to decision-making in organizations.
The research used regression analysis and correlation analysis to test hypotheses about
whether these technical elements have a significant positive relationship with organizational
decision performance. The findings demonstrated strong correlations between all three MIS
components and quality decision outcomes, indicating that high functioning MIS, with robust
communication/connectivity, optimized software, and capable hardware, provide the
necessary information infrastructure for good organizational decisions. The study bridged the
gap between poor decisions and ineffective MIS by proving that these systems, when properly
configured, directly enable productive decisions by supplying comprehensive, high-quality
information to managers and stakeholders. By emphasizing the crucial link between capable
MIS and decision improvement, the study addressed the problem of deficient information
systems hindering organizational decision performance.
The findings of the study suggest that the presence of robust telecommunications capabilities
in a Management Information System (MIS) has a strong correlation with improved decision-
making quality within an organization. This indicates that effective communication networks
and connectivity facilitate the flow of information, enabling leadership to make well-informed
strategic choices. Moreover, the analysis revealed that the computer software components of
an MIS are also significantly linked to better decision outcomes. These software applications
provide crucial storage, analysis, reporting, and modeling functions that enable more data-
driven decision-making. Finally, the study found that the computer hardware capabilities of an
MIS also show a marked connection to decision-making gains. This hardware encompasses
servers, databases, peripherals, and other components that affect the functionality and
effectiveness of the system.
7) Conclusions/Future work.
The author concludes that management information systems (MIS) have a crucial role in
facilitating high-quality decision-making in organizations when implemented effectively. The
study shows that the telecommunications, software, and hardware components of MIS are
strongly related to better decision-making. For future work, the author recommends that
businesses closely monitor their MIS to promptly address issues and prevent dysfunction,
which can impede decision performance. Additionally, implementing robust processes and
qualified personnel to manage MIS is essential for ensuring information quality and
responsiveness. The author also advises that organizations fully define their decision
methodology and systems to optimize integration with MIS capabilities. This includes
centralizing the decision process to align with MIS information flows and analytics tools.
Furthermore, continuous training is suggested so that managers can utilize the capabilities of
new MIS tools, techniques, and infrastructure in their decision-making processes. Adapting
decisions to take advantage of emerging MIS innovations can enhance insights and evaluate
more scenarios.
B) Does enterprise resource planning lead to the quality of the management accounting
information system?
1) What is the title of the paper?
Astuty, W., Pratama, I., Basir, I., & Harahap, J.P.R. (2022). Does enterprise resource planning
lead to the quality of the management accounting information system? Polish Journal of
Management Studies, 25(2), 93-107. https://doi.org/10.17512/pjms.2022.25.2.06
The author addresses the problem that various enterprises, especially public-owned
enterprises in Indonesia, face significant issues with management accounting information
system (MAIS) quality. Specific MAIS quality issues highlighted are low reliability of
information, inefficiency, and lack of flexibility. These MAIS shortcomings negatively impact
the critical management decisions related to investments, expenditures, working capital
management, and so on. Consequently, public enterprises suffer the effects through reduced
long-term profitability, low return on assets and equity. Therefore, there is an urgent need to
address the MAIS quality problems faced by Indonesian state-owned enterprises, in order to
support better decision making and strengthen their financial performance.
This study has two key objectives. Firstly, it aims to investigate the role of enterprise resource
planning (ERP) in improving the quality of management accounting information systems
(MAIS). The second objective is to specifically examine how ERP implementation affects the
three MAIS quality dimensions - reliability, efficiency and flexibility. The study tests if greater
adoption of ERP promotes reliability, efficiency, and flexibility of public-owned enterprise
MAIS in the Indonesian context. Meeting these objectives will provide clarity on how MAIS
quality issues can be resolved.
The critical takeaways from the literature are that: a) MAIS is crucial for management decision
making, hence quality is paramount, b) Indonesian state-owned enterprises suffer from poor
MAIS quality, harming their performance c) ERP adoption enhances accounting information
system quality along key dimensions like reliability. This highlights the value in studying if ERP
can uplift MAIS quality in Indonesian public sector enterprises.
The gap around how ERP adoption specifically uplifts MAIS quality in public enterprises is
addressed using a survey based empirical study. Data was collected using a questionnaire
among employees engaged in MAIS activities across Indonesian state-owned enterprises. The
analysis tested if greater ERP implementation positively impacts key MAIS quality factors -
reliability, efficiency, and flexibility (the study's conceptual model). So, ERP's effect on
addressing the core MAIS weaknesses was quantitatively examined. Partial least squares
analysis was then applied to analyze the survey data.
The key findings from the partial least squares analysis prove the significant positive effect of
ERP adoption on the reliability, efficiency, and flexibility of public enterprise MAIS in
Indonesia. So, the empirical results strongly validate that enhancing ERP implementation
levels strengthens MAIS quality across the three vital dimensions identified. For example,
higher ERP maturity enhances system availability, information reliability and timeliness -
uplifting MAIS reliability.
7) Conclusions/Future work.
ERP elevation plays a crucial role in strengthening MAIS quality in Indonesian public
enterprises when it comes to vital aspects like reliability, efficiency and flexibility. These
valuable insights can guide state owned enterprises to leverage ERP to rectify persistent MAIS
quality weaknesses that impact their financial performance. Future avenues of study include
comparing public versus private sector MAIS issues, exploring the effects of specific ERP
components, and examining other quality considerations like system integration. Collectively
addressing these would provide a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the
ERP-MAIS quality nexus in developing countries.
Mujahidin, E., Rosyadi, A.R., Ginting, N.B., Hartono, R., & Tanjung, H.B. (2023). Development of
a website-based sexual violence management information system in higher education.
International Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science, and Technology (IJEMST), 11(2),
375-387. https://doi.org/10.46328/ijemst.3091
The authors address the major gap that despite sexual violence being distressingly common
on Indonesian university campuses, there is a lack of integrated systems to properly register,
manage and resolve student assault cases. Existing mechanisms are described as inadequate,
inconsistent, and insensitive to victims' trauma. There are huge shortcomings in critical areas
like collecting assault data, coordinating responsible task forces, guidelines for assisting
survivors, and channels for complaints that trigger action against perpetrators. This leads to
severe under-reporting where most cases go unaddressed, allowing perpetrators, often staff,
to act with impunity. Overall, there are major unmet needs for systematic case handling both
to support survivors better and promote accountability.
YLBHI (Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation) Study (2020): Key Findings: Finds a high proportion
of reported sexual violence cases involve student victims, frequently with university staff as
perpetrators. Suggests gaps in preventing and resolving cases. Implications: Quantifies the
alarming magnitude of the problem in Indonesian higher education contexts specifically.
The findings from the small and large-scale evaluation trials of the developed information
system prototype were encouraging - expert, peer and user assessments rated the system
very good to excellent across dimensions like interface, functionality, organization and ease of
use. Quantitatively, the system scored 134 out of 150 in peer reviews. Additionally, qualitative
feedback highlighted benefits around easier case data access for decisions, coordinated task
forces, and providing a sense of security and recourse for student victims through
standardized channels for reporting and resolutions.
7) Conclusions/Future work.
In conclusion, the developed system fulfils the need for a customized, integrated platform to
manage campus sexual assault cases, that bridges gaps in existing piecemeal processes. Next
steps are augmenting features like adding a simulation module, expanding organizational
adoption beyond the university studied, and supporting access via more digital interfaces and
devices. The positive expert and user response validates the utility of a web-based information
system to systematically prevent and address the pressing issue of student sexual violations
on Indonesian campuses.
