MATATAG CURRICULUM CRITIQUE PAPER

PURPOSE
As bold as its name, the Matatag Curriculum has a stronghold for the value it may serve
to the table. MATATAG stands for "Make the curriculum relevant to produce job ready,
Active and responsible citizens: TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education
services and provisions facilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-
being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment; and, Give support for
teachers to teach better. The term "Matatag" itself translates to "strong" or "resilient" in
English, reflecting the curriculum's aim to fortify the educational foundation of students.
With all the good intentions the curriculum have in mind, it all boils down to one thing
decongestion. Removing some aspects of the current curriculum to make room for the
ones that will bring the greatest returns to the Filipino students seem to be the concept
of this decongestion.
OBJECTIVES
The Matatag Curriculum emerged as a response to these needs. Its key objective is to
simplify the curriculum by reducing the number of competencies. This shift empowers
educators to dedicate more time and resources to the development of fundamental
skills, including literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional growth. By placing a stronger
emphasis on these foundational proficiencies, the curriculum seeks to build a more solid
academic groundwork for students during their critical early years, specifically from
kindergarten through grade 3.
The primary aim of this is to empower graduates with essential competencies and
insights for further education, as well as for the cultivation of middle-level skills and
successful employment . The program consists of 7 subjects: Mother Tongue, Filipino,
English, Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, and ESP.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MATATAG CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION

The K to 12 curriculum was seen to have overloaded classes and subjects, resulting in
"learning losses" among students. With too many subjects to study, the result was
devastating for learners. After being made aware of this, the new curriculum which is
now decongested, provides an intervention.
Having said that, this new curriculum will undoubtedly have benefits and disadvantages.
As the curriculum will be implemented, one of its potentials is that now, there will be a
greater focus on foundational skills. This benefits the learners' mastery of core abilities
such as reading, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills, and their mastery of such will no
longer be compromised. As a result, they will be a more developed and competent
learners.
In addition, one of the main features of the revised K to 10 curriculum is reducing the
number of competencies making it a "learner" version of the current one. Among the
notable changes in the "less congested" matatag curriculum is that the learning areas in
Grades 1 and 2 have been cut from seven to five.
However, the accelerated implementation of the matatag curriculum, shortly after its
launch, introduces host of challenges that can ripple throughout the education system.
With a limited window for teacher training, educators may find themselves grappling to
adapt to the new pedagogical techniques and content delivery methods inherent to the
curriculum. This not only places additional stress on teachers but also raises concerns
about the quality of instruction that students will receive during this transitional phase.
The changes introduced by the matatag curriculum also carry implication for parents and
guardians. It may leave parents feeling disoriented and uncertain about how the
alterations will impact their children's educational experiences.
CONCLUSION
Having laid down of the newly launched Matatag Curriculum, I have seen seen the
potential of the so-called "decongested" version of the K-12 Program. With this, it is with
firm justification that we declare our stand towards its implementation. Since it was
introduced last August of this year
the Philippine Educational System has received reactions from the mass, groups, and
movements.
This revised curriculum exudes the rebranding of the current program structure with the
aim of producing Filipino students who are ready to traverse the global arena. In this
evolving world, the best trait one could have is the ability to adapt to every conditions.
When a child is born and grows up, he/ she will have to go through the tedious and
lengthy journey to achieve his greatest adherence. Relatively, a broad part of his growth
is expected to happen inside the academe. And the way the academe operates relies
enormously on the curriculum being implemented within its bounds. Needless to say, the
curriculum influences how a student's life will pan out and beyond school, it draws the
path from where a child's life will potentially be directed.
Regardless if this will be viewed from different lenses, knowing that these years are the
founding years of learners and it will be the time that they will be setting their roots
towards learning. It will set the tone for the rest of their school years, and simplifying
the curriculum and shedding it for the most significant competencies to have more room
will be the best thing the lawmakers can do for the children of the future.
