Maharatna ONGC is the largest crude oil and natural gas Company in India, contributing
around 71 per cent to Indian domestic production. Crude oil is the raw material used by
downstream companies like IOC, BPCL, HPCL and MRPL (Last two are subsidiaries of
ONGC) to produce petroleum products like Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Naphtha, and
Cooking Gas LPG.

ONGC has a unique distinction of being a company with in-house service capabilities in
all areas of Exploration and Production of oil & gas and related oil-field services. Winner
of the Best Employer award, this public sector enterprise has a dedicated team of around
27,000 professionals who toil round the clock in challenging locations.
ONGC Videsh Limited, a Miniratna Schedule “A” Central Public Sector Enterprise
(CPSE) of the Government of India under the administrative control of the Ministry of
Petroleum & Natural Gas, is the wholly owned subsidiary and overseas arm of Oil and
Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), the flagship national oil company (NOC) of
India. The primary business of ONGC Videsh is to prospect for oil and gas acreages
outside India, including exploration, development and production of oil and gas.

at present.

 Scale of production:

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is one of the largest oil and gas
exploration and production companies in India. It has a diverse portfolio of oil
and gas assets both in India and abroad.
The scale of production in ONGC varies from year to year depending on the level of
exploration and production activities undertaken by the company. In the financial
year 2020-21, ONGC produced 20.2 million tonnes of crude oil and 23.5 billion
cubic meters of natural gas.
In terms of exploration, ONGC has a large number of exploration blocks in various
stages of exploration and development, which can potentially increase its production
in the future.
Overall, ONGC's scale of production is significant, and the company is a major
contributor to India's domestic oil and gas production.

 Investment:
Following are some of the investments made by the company:
1. Exploration and Production: ONGC has invested heavily in exploration and
production of oil and gas, both in India and abroad. The company has
exploration and production assets in various countries such as Russia, Iran,
Sudan, and Myanmar.

2. Refining: ONGC has also invested in the refining business, and it has a
subsidiary called Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL)
which operates a refinery in Mangalore, India.

3. Petrochemicals: ONGC has invested in the petrochemicals business through


its subsidiary ONGC Petro additions Limited (OPaL), which operates a
petrochemical complex in Gujarat, India.

4. Renewable Energy: ONGC has also started investing in renewable energy


sources such as wind and solar power. The company has set up wind power
projects in Gujarat and has also invested in a solar power project in Rajasthan.

 Turnover:
The turnover of ONGC varies from year to year depending on the level of exploration
and production activities undertaken by the company.
In the financial year 2020-21, ONGC's turnover was approximately INR 1,62,787
crore (approximately USD 21.8 billion). This represents a decrease of 28.9%
compared to the previous financial year 2019-20, which can be attributed to lower
crude oil prices and lower demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, it is important to note that ONGC's turnover can be affected by various
factors such as global crude oil prices, government policies, and other economic
factors. Despite the challenges faced by the company, ONGC remains a key player in
the Indian oil and gas industry and continues to contribute significantly to the
country's energy security.

 Pollution:
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has been involved in a number of
incidents that have caused pollution and environmental damage. Some of the
notable incidents are as follows:

1. Oil Spills: ONGC has been involved in several oil spills, which have caused
significant damage to the marine environment. For example, in 2019, a major oil
spill occurred at ONGC's offshore drilling site near Mumbai, which resulted in
the death of marine life and affected the livelihood of local fishermen.

2. Air Pollution: ONGC's operations have also been associated with air pollution,
particularly in areas where it operates refineries and petrochemical plants. For
example, the air quality in and around the city of Ankleshwar, where ONGC has
a large production facility, has been found to be poor, and residents have
complained about health problems related to air pollution.

3. Waste Disposal: ONGC's waste disposal practices have also been criticized,
particularly with regard to the disposal of hazardous waste. For example, in
2016, ONGC's disposal of oil sludge in the city of Dehradun was found to be in
violation of environmental regulations.

ONGC has taken measures to address these issues, including investing in


technologies to reduce emissions and improve waste management practices. The
company has also faced regulatory action and has been required to pay fines for
environmental violations. However, there is ongoing concern about the impact of
ONGC's operations on the environment, and there is a need for continued monitoring
and regulation to ensure that the company operates in an environmentally responsible
manner.

 Conclusion:
Therefore, we surveyed the industry ‘Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and
found information about its production, investments, turnover and pollution.
