ISI and CMI preparation Strategy

Ravindra Sindhiya--

For Paper 1 (PCA) :

Go for Previous year questions of ISI try to solve them if you can do (fine),
if you are weak in some topic of math then
Pick up jee mains/advanced materials, grasp the concepts, and practice
(OR )
If you are weak in some topic and not able to solve pyq of that topic go for YouTube playlist of
jee and learn topics from them (most students did it ).

Usually 18-20 questions from Jee like topics and the rest from topics like Basic Geometry,
Number Theory, etc

Good attempt would be 20-22 questions with good accuracy.

ISI and CMI PYQ are available on Gateoverflow ,See your answers and check with answers
posted on gateoverflow.
Also there is whatsapp group for ISI preparation so you can discuss there.
Paper 2:

Try to learn proving techniques: induction, proof by contradiction, proving contrapositive

statement, counter-examples(mostly useful in graph theory)

TOC: See pyq of ISI and CMI ,try by yourself if you couldn't do it you can go on website Gate
overflow and see their approach . Apart from these practice previous
Year Gate as well .

Discrete maths: Solve problems from Kenneth Rosen, Narsing Deo(Graph theory)

Algorithms: Read about Binary Search and its applications(very important for ISI entrance),
Linked-List , Binary Trees,AVL -Trees, Heaps, Graphs from CLRS.
You should watch Prof Naveen Garg's Nptel videos-it is one of the best available. Practicing the
Previous Year Questions from ISI entrance Paper and Gate
is a must.

OS: Solve Previous papers ( Gate preparation is enough)

CN: Solve pyq from Gateoverflow for ISI Gate prev year questions
is a must for CN . Those questions are very helpful for ISI Entrance as well.

DBMS: Previous year questions and Gate level preparation would be enough.

COA: Gate pyq and ISI pyq ( Gate preparation is enough, if you find difficulty in CO then I also
mentioned other students strategy for CO, follow their plan .)

ISI and CMI PYQ are available on Gateoverflow ,See your answers and check with answers
posted on gateoverflow.

Good attempt: 6-7 questions with correct logic. One must attempt all the questions and write
whatever logic is coming to your mind.
might not be correct but you will get partial marks if your thought process is in the correct
direction.

My classmate(Arkadeep) -

For Paper 1(PCA) :

Test of Mathematics at 10+2 level (Tomato) book(if basics like calculus, functions, trigonometry,
geometry, combinatorics,etc are good)

Otherwise, pick up jee mains/advanced materials, grasp the concepts, and practice.

The questions are usually very adhoc which can be better tackled only through practice. For
practice the tomato book is a must. The tomato book contains quite a lot of
practice questions.Practice atleast 100 questions from the book to get comfortable/familiar with
the type of questions asked at ISI Entrance.

Usually 18-20 questions from Jee like topics and the rest from topics like Basic Geometry,
Number Theory, etc

Good attempt would be 20-22 questions with good accuracy. Also remember in the ISI Entrance
you get 1 marks for not attempting the question, 4 marks for correct answer and there
is no negative marking. So attempting 20-22 questions with good accuracy and leaving the rest
suffices.
Paper 2:

Try to learn proving techniques: induction, proof by contradiction, proving contrapositive

statement, counter-examples(mostly useful in graph theory)

TOC: I have studied mainly from the book Michael Sipser. Also practice the theoratical questions
of the book.The questions
in the book are in tune to the type of subjective questions asked in the ISI entrance. Apart from
these practice previous
Year Gate as well as ISI Entrance paper questions.

Practising the
Previous Year Questions from ISI entrance Paper and Gate
is a must.

OS: Solve from Galvin and Previous papers

CN: Wtach Ravindra Babu Ravula's CN videos and also read from Forouzan book (Data
Communications). Practising Gate prev year questions
is a must. Those questions are very helpful for ISI Entrance as well.

DBMS: Previous year questions and Gate level preparation would be enough. You can watch
Sanchit Jain's videos for preparing.
COA: Nptel-Lectures of Prof S Raman, IIT M. Practising Gate and ISI Entrance previous year
paper is a must.

Practise writing subjective questions by solving proof based questions from the various books
mentioned. It is a must for ISI entrance.

Good attempt: 6-7 questions with correct logic. One must attempt all the questions and write
whatever logic is coming to your mind. You
might not be correct but you will get partial marks if your thought process is in the correct
direction.

My classmate(Soham chatterjee) -
Things which I did:
1. Practise previous year question papers, especially Paper - 1 since some topics are NOT in
GATE syllabus.
2. Give mock tests in a time bound environment; ie- try the solve previous year question papers
both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in 2 hours each.
3. After taking mocks, tally your answers with those of Gate Overflow ( ISI entrance test
questions solutions are usually available on Gate Overflow ).
4. Identify your mistakes from these tests and try to improve your score in the subsequent test.
5. If you are NOT able to understand certain mathematical concepts or solutions of some math
or CS questions, feel free to post your doubts on StackOverflow or MathOverflow or reach out to
your peers in case you have WhatsApp groups for preparation or ask your mentor ( if you are
enrolled in some coaching etc. )

My Junior (Siva kumar) -

For Paper 1 :

Tomato book(if basics like calculus, functions, trigonometry, geometry, combinatorics, etc are
good)

Otherwise, pick up jee mains/advanced materials, grasp the concepts, and practice.

Certain topics like functional analysis, convergence, sequence and series aren't covered for
many BTechs, so extra effort if time permits(this usually is in MSc Maths syllabus)

Usually 18-20 questions from Jee like topics

And 10-12 questions from functional analysis

Good attempt would be 25 questions with high accuracy

Paper 2:

Try to learn proving techniques: induction, proof by contradiction, proving contrapositive

statement, counter-examples(mostly useful in graph theory)

TOC: Nptel Prof Kamala lectures( very important)

Discrete maths: Solve problems from Kenneth Rosen, Narsing Deo(Graph theory)
Algorithms: Previous papers have good questions but you can also try CLRS
OS: Solve from Galvin and Previous papers
DBMS: Previous year questions and Gate level preparation would be enough
COA: Nptel-Lectures of Prof S Raman, IIT M

(These will also help for gate, but do it only if you have 1 to 1.5yrs of time till gate)
Try to write proofs for previous year questions and revise them in the last days

Good attempt: 6-7 questions, but attemp all the questions, don't leave, write whatever you think
of that question.

Revise maths formulas of JEE + other paper 1 topics, time will be a factor.

*****ISI entrance preparation*******
I'm writing my preparation strategy considering you are from an engineering background & you
will attempt the CS section from the PCB paper.
Stage 1:(optional) If you are not in touch with 10+2 math during the final year of B.Tech start
solving JEE Arihant questions (you don't need to solve the whole book, do only the syllabus
part). I solved Coordinate geometry, calculus, complex numbers questions from it because I was
not in touch with these chapters.

Stage 2:- If your basics in math are strong then you can skip stage 1. Then solve questions from
the TOMATO book(skip similar type of question) If you get stuck somewhere in between you can
use Tanujit sir's website for TOMATO solutions & other resources.
https://www.ctanujit.org/isi-mtech-exams.html
Please don't see solutions beforehand (Be Honest with your preparation, it maximize your
chance of admission :p ). solve B.Math & B.Stat questions given in TOMATO. This will help you
to clear your concepts in a more precise manner.

Stage 3:- Solve PYQ's available on the admission test website for both PCA & PCB sections.

Coming to the subjective part

Focus on system subjects CO, CN, OS. Don't skip this part. According to the general trend of
PYQ, they will ask numerical from this section so score well in these subjects to maximize your
score.

C, DS, DAA being the heart of CSE, will ask you to write programs, proposing a suitable data
structure & writing algorithms in the subjective paper. Even though the questions are a bit
difficult don't skip them explain your approach there will be partial marking.

DBMS, DL questions are very easy, do PYQ's thoroughly. They will ask you to prove something
from Graph Theory. Go through the proofs given in Narsingh Deo & study from Kenneth Rosen
as well.
NOTE:- 1. Don't give too much attention to the previous year's cutoff. It varies depending on the
difficulty of the question paper, number of students writing the exam, etc. 2019 PCA paper was
very easy & the 2020 paper was moderate.
2. Keep one thing in mind you are not just competing with CS students but also there are math
students coming from M.Sc backgrounds.

If you are planning to shape your career in ML, AI, Computer Vision, research... ISI is definitely
the best choice. go for it!! Don't worry about placements, for now, everyone gets a healthy
package that one can imagine :p(equivalent to old IITs).

My junior (Harshit joshi) --

If you had prepared for gate well and ur basics are clear in OS, DBMS, ALGO, DS, CO, DL
around 60% cs paper would be easier for u Coming to the mathematics part, a CS guy must
focus more on mathematics part for that u can refer tomato book it will be sufficient
And most importantly try to solve pyq's upto 5 years by your own(specially mathematics part
solve each and every qus ,most of the concepts are same every year)
Also be in touch with gate subjects.

************* CMI ************

My Friend (Omkar bhalerao)
For subjective, practice as many problems as you can. Try to solve questions from previous
years.
Refer standard texts.
For CMI, need to focus on only few subjects. Some books I followed:
1. Discrete Maths: Kenneth Rosen
2. Algorithms: Kleinberg and Tardos
3. TOC: Sipser
Try solving some questions given at the end of these books and previous year questions.
