Introduction:- “The curb in the sky” was written by James Thurber. He was a famous
American essayist, humorist and storywriter. He also became well known for his cartoons.
“The curb in the sky” tells the story of Dorothy and Charlie Deshler. Dorothy has the habit
te
finish their sentences. The story runs between the wife and the husband, and how the husband
s
of constantly interrupting other people when they speak, in order to correct their mistakes or to
d a
Dorothy was a young lady from a civilised family. She was beautiful, clever and
U p
impressive personality. She had many talents except one bad habit of interrupting into others
matters. Because of this bad habit nobody dared to marry her. Dorothy didn’t know her bad
habit and even her parents. Charlie Deshler didn’t know about Dorothy’s character.
i t y
Charlie Deshler was a soft person and handsome. He was a writer and wrote many
r s
stories. Deshsler told his friends that he is going to get marry to Dorothy. Deshler’s friends
knew about Dorothy’s character and emotional behaviour. They advised that not to get marry.
e
v
Charlie was impressed by her loving face and attracted looks; he ignored his friend’s words
i
and got married. Charlie knew within a short time that Dorothy was a emotional person; she
n
pointed out each and every mistake and corrected them. He avoided to telling the imaginary
U
stories and his dreams. He could not bear her for long time so he wanted to avoid her by
leaving. He joined in asylum.
“One day Charlie narrated the story of outlandish dream, in the story he was
moving towards the moon on an airplane which was made of telephone wires, about his half
way met one man looked like Santa Claus and he was dressed in the uniform of a customs.
Santa Claus said that there was no way and go by another way. At once she interfered and said
that there were no curbs in the sky. At this time he was in asylum for his mental breakdown.
He wanted to get rest there. Even though he was in an asylum, Dorothy could not give up her
usual habit of corrections. Charlie Deshler became mad by Dorothy’s attitude.
2. HAPPY PEOPLE
: - William Ralph Inge.
Introduction: - “Happy People” the lesson was written William Ralph Inge. He was renowned
clergyman (male priest at church). He was a English writer, he wrote more than 30 books and
gave popular quotations.
“Happy People” explores the question of “what makes people happy and who are
considered to be happy people”. He considered some people are happy and content referring to
the endless discussion on different people around. According to Inge it is a fact that we don’t
know much about the people around us. He said that young are happier than old. Because they
have some kind of mutual understanding, even they have some conflicts. Robert Browning
boldly claims that old age people are happier than the young people.
te s
a
Inge said that the married people are happy, if the match is correct. They don’t
d
p
commit suicide compare to single. In the whole of the world, a mad man is always happy,
because he doesn’t have any problems. It doesn’t mean that one should become mad to be
U
happy. Inge said a saint enjoyed a lot. The saint name was “Sadhu Sunder Singh” was Hindu
y
t
mystic and Christian Missionary. Inge was impressed by Sadhu story. He was perfect that, he
s i
led his life happily among the difficulties. Inge treated him as Christ and advised his readers to
read Sadhu’s story. Inge said that one way, the successful man is happy than who has not
r
i v e
success in life. The busy person is happier than idle person.
Napoleon said to have a hard heart and a good digestion as the good condition of
n
happiness. Inge said that monks find happiness in calamities and often in adversities. They
never bother about difficulties.
U Inge likes to be happy. He gave many examples of happy people. Being a critic he
studied different attitudes of different people. The opinion of Inge; in this world, humanity
depends upon love and sympathy. One has to bear with others for which a kind heart is
necessary. There is no particular cause for being happy in the world. His essay suggests that
faith and trust in god can enhance one’s state of happiness.
2. A PSALM OF LIFE
:- Henry Wordsworth Longfellow
“A Psalm of life” is a poem and it is a sacred song. It was written by great American
writer “Henry Wordsworth Longfellow”. Longfellow subtitled his poem often “what the heart
of the young man said to the psalmist”
A psalm is a religious or sacred song of hymn. But here the meaning of a “ Psalm of
life” is song of life, where the poet glorifies life and its possibilities. It is an invocation to
s
mankind to follow the path of righteousness, the right way to live this life. The poem consists
te
of nine stanzas of four lines.
The poet is going to give us some instructions on what this life actually and how we
a
should take it. He says that not tell life is sorrowful and meaning dream. You should be
d
p
optimist (positive) not to be pessimist (negative). You should have always positive attitude
towards life otherwise you cannot achieve anything. Life is real and serious, life does not end
y U
with death, and our works remain in this world even after our death.
He says that life is about the ideal way of living. According to Longfellow life is
i t
neither enjoy nor sorrow, should be ultimate aim or aim of life. Life is combination of failure
s
r
and success, enjoy and sorrow.
e
Most important thing everyone should work, don’t waste even a single day. You should
v
have responsibilities in your life. There is a lot of work, but time is short, time never stops. It is
i
running fast so you should use every moment is useful. The poet says that we have brave and
n
strong heart but we fail to start work. Longfellow compares this situation our heart to the
U
breathing of the clothed drums at the funeral marches to the grave.
Longfellow says that world is battle field, to success in life we should fight as a hero.
You should not like dumb cattle driven by others, without goals. You should learn from past
and live in the present and keep hope for future. Again one thing past never comes and future
nobody knows, enjoy with present. There are many successful stories remind us. We get so
many things from great men to achieve our targets. Those inspire later generations to follow
our way.
Going through this poem we now realize “How inspiring and motivating this poem
to the people”. We should not waste our valuable time by sitting idle, and doing nothing, rather
we have to work hard to reach our goals.
