Introduction
English textbook for secondary school Book Three is the third in a series of seven textbooks which
are currently developed to respond to the new policy of the Ministry of Education and Sports on the reform
of general education from 11 years to 12 years. Upon the new educational reform, the Ministry of
Education and Sports has decided to add another one year to secondary school program in academic year
2009-2010. To implement the new policy, the Foreign Language Resource Centre at the Research Institute
for Educational Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters at the National University of Laos have
formed the team to develop the Curriculum and write the textbook with teacher’s guide by financial
support from the Basic Education Sector Development Project (BESDP).
Along with the textbook, the teacher’s guide has been provided in order to help teachers perform
their teachings effectively. The teacher’s guide has included teaching techniques of each step of the lessons.
There are also some instructions of using teaching aids and some suggestions for teachers and students how to
create teaching aids for their own classes.
However, the textbook is produced under the time pressure; therefore, some minor errors could not
be avoided. The Foreign Language Resource Centre highly appreciates all comments and suggestions
from textbook users and those are considered as a great contribution to the quality assurance of the textbook
as well as to the development of the Lao National Education. The Research Institute for Educational
Sciences avails itself of this opportunity to express its sincere thanks to all contributors.

those advantages. There are a lot of places to study. There are many
different kinds of secondary schools, both public and private.

There are a lot of different ways that teenagers can entertain themselves. I
really like window shopping with my friends after school and on
weekends. There are lots of shopping malls in Bangkok and I go to one at
least twice a week. I usually go to the movies once a month. There are
cinemas in the shopping malls. I love pop music. In my free time I
sometimes go to concerts with my friends. For me, another good thing
about living in Bangkok is the mixture of different people there. I see
people from all over the world and sometimes I can practise my English
with some English-speaking families who live along my street.
I think there is a big housing problem in Bangkok.

The Hmong are ancient people. They live in northern parts of Laos,
Vietnam and Thailand, in southern China and eastern Myanmar.
Traditionally, the Hmong live in villages in mountainous areas.
The Hmong people have a rich and complex
culture. This is seen in their legends, stories,
proverbs, songs and poems. Like other
ancient people around the world, the Hmong
have an oral tradition. Their songs and stories
have been kept for many hundreds of years
by word of mouth, rather than in writing. An
interesting festival is Boun Kin Jieng or

126

Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue

virus. These viruses are transmitted
by mosquitoes which bite during the
daytime. These mosquitoes are often
in houses so people should sleep
under mosquito nets day and night.
People who get the disease have a
high fever, a headache, and muscle
and bone pain. They have a rash and
sometimes they vomit.
There is no vaccination for this kind of disease. So, if you get the disease,
