CLARA BARTON

Clara Barton was born in Oxford, Massachusetts.

She loved helping people. When she was a teenager, she was
a teacher in a private school. She loved teaching but she was
sad because poor children couldn’t study at this school. She
started teaching poor children without pay. She soon had 600
students.

Then, when the Civil War started, she helped soldiers. She
collected money from people to help soldiers.

Later, she helped people in the war between France and

Prussia, in Europe. There, she saw the International Red Cross
Organization. She liked the idea of this organization and when
she returned to America, she started working to establish a Red
Cross in America.

It was really hard. She talked to people in the American

government and eight years later, she formed the American
Red Cross. She was the president for 23 years.

 At the beginning, the Red Cross only served soldiers but then,
the organization started helping in floods, earthquakes and all
kinds of disasters.

Today, the Red Cross helps thousands of people and the

organization is well-known all around the world. Clara Barton
