LESSON PLAN FOR ISLAMIC STUDIES

WEEK: Two
DATE: 11th – 15th September, 2023
CLASS: JSS 1
LESSON TITLE: Pillars of Islam
SUBTITLE (IF ANY): Meaning and Significance of Pillars of Islam
PERIOD: Double
DURATION: 80 Minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
i. explain the meaning of pillar of Islam;
ii. state and arrange the pillars of Islam in order;
iii. evaluate the significance of five pillars of Islam
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS:
Islām: Submission, Imān: Belief, Ṣalāt: Prayer,
Zakāt: Poor Rate/Alms Giving, Sawm: Fasting, Ḥajj: Pilgrimage,
‘Ummah: Muslim Community, Yawmul-Qiyāmah: Day of Resurrection,
Al-Jannah: The Garden of Bliss, Jahānam: Hell fire.

BUILDING BACKGROUND/CONNECTION TO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
The students must have been able to describe and state the meaning of Islam and mention
its pillars. They must have also heard or being taught that there are some other creations
of Allah (SWT) who are unseen to the naked eyes of human beings like Jinns and
Angels.

CONTENT:
Pillars of Islam
 Islam is from a three-lettered Arabic word which is simply translated into English as
peace, submission, surrender, obedience etc.
 In broader term, Islam is defined as complete submission to the will of Allah (SWT).
 It is the way of life that leads to success in this world through total obedience to Allah.
 A person who believes in Allah and observes all the pillars of Islam is called “Muslim”
 There FIVE pillars of Islam i.e. ‘Imān, Ṣalāt, Zakāt, Ṣawm and Ḥajj.
 The pillars are simply translated in English as:
‘Imān: Belief,
Ṣalāt: Prayer,
Zakāh: Alms Giving,
Ṣawm: Fasting,
Ḥajj: Pilgrimage.
 These pillars are the foundations and bedrock on which the religion of Islam is built.
 Without them, one cannot be referred to as a Muslim.
 The opposite of Muslim is Kafir: Unbeliever or Mushirk: Polytheist.

Significance of the Pillars of Islam


 The pillars of Islam instill pure and straightforward belief system in man.
 They demonstrate total obedience to Allah’s commandments.
 They make Muslims to be united and become one; ‘Ummah
 They create brotherhood/sisterhood among Muslims.
 They emphasize the sense of equality and justice among Muslims
 They create feelings and sympathy for the less privileged among Muslims.
 They encourage the rich to financially assist the poor and needy.
 They eradicate poverty and suffering in Muslim communities.
 They are the attractions for non-Muslims into the fold of Islam.
 They remind Muslim of the Yawmul-Qiyāmah: Day of Resurrection
In conclusion, the proper adherence to the teachings of the pillars of Islam makes a person a real
and good Muslim. This is because Islam, as total way of life is not only to ensure smooth
relationship between Allah (SWT) and His creations, but also among man and other fellow
beings including the unseen like Jinn.
LEARNING STRATEGIES & ACTIVITIES:
The teacher presents the lesson through activities which include the followings as he/she
encourages communication and collaboration skills after thorough and critical thinking and
problem solving, leadership and personal development among the students:
Activity 1: The students, as a class brainstorm on the meaning of the pillars of Islam.
Activity 2: They state, describe and identify its meaning both literally and technically
Activity 3: They are guided to mention the pillars of Islam both in Arabic and their
meanings in English translation including their local languages
Activity 4: They in pairs, arrange the five pillars of Islam in accordance with the
meaning of Ḥadīth 3 of An-Nawāwī’s Collections
Activity 5: They in groups, highlight the significance of the five pillars of Islam in the
life of Muslims spiritually, religiously, socially and economically.
ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION):
The teacher assesses the lesson through questioning such as:
i. State the three letters root of Islam
ii. explain the meaning of pillar of Islam;
iii. Describe and define Islam
iv. state and arrange the pillars of Islam in order;
v. evaluate the significance of five pillars of Islam
Additional comprehensive questions may also include;
vi. Who is a Muslim?
vii. Mention the opposite of Muslim
viii. Must a Muslim believe in the existence and uniqueness of Allah and why?
ix. Explain TWO differences between Salāt and Zakāt.
x. Identify the teachings of the pillars of Islam to Muslims
WRAP UP (CONCLUSION)
He wraps up and concludes the lesson using web summary method and corrects any
mistake observed during assessment of the lesson.
ASSIGNMENT:
The students are asked to write short note on the meanings of and differences between
Ḥadīth and Sunnah
