Pillars of Islam
Islam is from a three-lettered Arabic word which is simply translated into English as
peace, submission, surrender, obedience etc.
In broader term, Islam is defined as complete submission to the will of Allah (SWT).
It is the way of life that leads to success in this world through total obedience to Allah.
A person who believes in Allah and observes all the pillars of Islam is called “Muslim”
There FIVE pillars of Islam i.e. ‘Imān, Ṣalāt, Zakāt, Ṣawm and Ḥajj.
The pillars are simply translated in English as:
‘Imān: Belief,
Ṣalāt: Prayer,
Zakāh: Alms Giving,
Ṣawm: Fasting,
Ḥajj: Pilgrimage.
These pillars are the foundations and bedrock on which the religion of Islam is built.
Without them, one cannot be referred to as a Muslim.
The opposite of Muslim is Kafir: Unbeliever or Mushirk: Polytheist.
