SCIENCE 4

Quarter 1 – Week 2 – Day 1

I. Learning Competency
Describe changes in solid materials when they are bent, pressed, hammered, or cut;
( S4MT-le-f-5)
OBJECTIVE
Identify changes in solid materials when they are bent.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Materials that can Bent
B. Science Ideas/Concepts:
 Solid materials can be bent.
 When bent, these materials may change their size and shape, but no new material is
formed.
 Hence, only the physical appearance of the solid material is changed when bent.
C. Materials:
Teacher’s Materials: Worksheet No. 1, pictures
Learner’s Material: plastic ruler, paper clip, 1 pc of rubber slippers, electric wire,
metal spoon, paper clips
D. References: MELC Q1, Science Teacher’s Guide, Science Learner’s Guide, Science SLM
E. Processing Skills: observing, identifying and communicating
F. Values Focus: Be cautious
G. Integration: English, MAPEH, ESP

III. LEARNING TASKS

A. Engagement

1. Using a flash cards, conduct a Science word drill with the learners.

bent solid property

materials changes

2. Ask: What are the materials that undergo decay?

The learners will answer orally.

3. Show the pictures to the learners one by one. Let the learners identify each picture.
4. The teacher will present the topic about solid materials and its characteristics,
shape and size.
5. Ask: What happen to these materials when you bent it?
6. Let the learners take note of the characteristics of the materials.
7. The teacher will present the concept of changes of materials that can bent.

B. Exploration
1. Divide the class into small groups.
2. Introduce the activity to the learners.
Activity 1: “Pick Me Up”

What you need:

plastic ruler paper clip

1 pc of rubber slippers tie wire
electric wires metal spoon

What to do:
1. Pick the materials one by one and bent it.
2. Observe the changes happen to solid materials when bent.
3. Check the column if the materials changes in the size and shape.
3. Record your observations in the manila paper provided for your group reporting.

3. Check materials needed. Provide them also with the activity sheet, manila paper, and marking
pen.
4. Provide instructions in doing activity (allotted time 10 minutes for the activity, the data table to
be accomplished, group presenter/member’s role/responsibility, precautionary measures to take,
etc.)
5. Then, let them do Activity 1 “Pick Me Up?”.
6. Supervise the class while they are doing the activity.

C. Explanation
1. Ask the group presenter to present their output.
2. Have the group reporter to present their results of the activity.
3. Help learners formulate idea or concepts by asking:
a. What are the materials that can be bent?
b. What are the changes happened when you bent those materials?
c. Explain your observations on these objects.

D. Elaboration/Extension
1. Allow the learners to construct concept based on their activity.
 Solid materials can be bent. When bent, these materials may change their size and shape,
but no new material is formed. Hence, only the physical appearance of the solid material is
changed when bent.

2. Help the learners conceptualize the by asking:

 What did you do in the group activity to avoid accidents?
 What might happen if you bent your body too much?

E. Evaluation
Directions: Tell the learners to identify the changes happened in solid materials when bent. Write
the answers on the each box provided.

3.

4.

5.

F. Assignment
The learners will draw one (1) material that can be found in their kitchen that can be bent.
Mastery Level: __________ No. of passers
__________ No. of learners present
__________ Percentage of passers

Instructional Decision: _____ proceed (100% passers)

_____ proceed (75 – 99% passers; with remediation)
_____ reteach (74% and below)
