This list includes a list of nationally competitive scholarships and their sponsors. This compilation of organizations
reflects only the most prominent sponsors. The list is not inclusive of all scholarships available to college students and
award-granting organizations can request to be added to the list.
(The Department of State provides support to a network of advising centers with information on various sources of
financial aids)
International Visitor Program (United States Information Agency/USIA). The visitors, who are selected by American
Foreign Service Officers overseas, are current or potential leaders in government, politics, the media, education, labor
relations, the arts, business and other fields. The invitation to visit the United States under the auspices of USIA's IV
Program is extended by U.S. Embassies. For that reason, individuals cannot apply to participate in the program. As
mentioned, candidates for the International Visitor Program are nominated by American Foreign Service Officers
stationed at U.S. Embassies and at USIA offices overseas. Once the nominations are approved, the program and other
logistical arrangements are handled by USIA staff overseas and in Washington

The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) provides opportunities for advanced study to exceptional

The Japan Foundation sponsors a variety of grant programs relating to the exchange of persons,
support for Japanese Studies and Japanese-language instruction, exchanges in the arts, and
assistance for media-related projects such as publications, translation, and film or video
production. Grant programs are reviewed either in the United States or Japan, depending on the
grant category.

1985, this program provides full funding for fifty Spanish graduate students each year to study in
the U.S. for a two-year period. Each year, "la Caixa" undertakes a highly competitive selection
process to identify the fifty graduate-level students and professionals who will apply for study at
U.S. universities. Indiana University participates in this selection process. Each year, the Dean for
International Programs and other faculty and administrators participate in several days of
interviews, after which the final list of candidates is drawn up. The selected fellows then begin
the application process with assistance from Indiana University's Program Coordinator.
