Bloemfontein - It is being described as the worst drought to have hit in 20 years. Five out of

Borrie Erasmus, a farmer whose family has worked and lived on the same land in the Free

there has never been a time that there has not been any maize in December. We could not
even try planting seeds. It has been drier than ever," Erasmus said.

The drought is costing farmers more than an estimated R600m in lost crops. While the
government says it will be spending R19m on assisting farmers, it also suggested that farmers

Farmers devastated by El Niňo drought

Bloemfontein - It is being described as the worst drought to have hit in 20 years. Five out of
the nine provinces have been declared disaster zones as dry conditions triggered by the El
Niňo weather pattern continue to devastate the country.

Borrie Erasmus, a farmer whose family has worked and lived on the same land in the Free
State for the past five decades, told Al Jazeera he had not seen anything like it. "On our farm,
there has never been a time that there has not been any maize in December. We could not
even try planting seeds. It has been drier than ever," Erasmus said.

The drought is costing farmers more than an estimated R600m in lost crops. While the
government says it will be spending R19m on assisting farmers, it also suggested that farmers
should start adapting to changing weather patterns.

JOHANNESBURG – With two men expected to appear in the Durban magistrates court on
Monday morning in connection with a riot at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Kaizer Chiefs says
its consulting the police and will also conduct its own investigation.

Soccer fans dressed in Chiefs regalia were seen vandalising parts of the stadium and
storming onto the pitch after the team lost 2-0 to Free State Stars on Saturday.

A video has been making the rounds of a male security guard, initially thought to be a
woman, being beaten by fans.

Seats were set on fire and TV cameras damaged.

Kaizer Chiefs’s Vino Maphosa says that while they will be launching a probe into the riot
internally, the police are definitely investigating the assault of a security guard on the field.

“This matter has now transcended, it’s no longer a matter of football, it’s now a security,
medical matter that has seriously become subject of an investigation.”

Gwala says as police continue with investigations more arrests are expected.

Jabu is a nurse that works in a very busy hospital. He loves his job and is
respected for his dedication and professionalism. “I like working with my
hands but I like working with people too. So that made nursing perfect for me.”
Some people find it very strange that he is a man and a nurse. “Oh, you are a
MALE nurse?” they say. He answers them by saying, “I am a nurse, why do
you call me a male nurse? We don’t after all speak about MALE teachers or
MALE doctors, do we?”
Jabu admits that studying nursing was not his idea to begin with. He was in a
job that he found boring and he did not know what else to go and study. It was
his mother, who is a nurse, who suggested that he study nursing. My first
thought was, “This is a woman’s profession!” But here I am and I have never
been happier.
“There are many myths and untruths that exist around men being nurses.
Firstly, it is not just a women’s job. The number of men in nursing is steadily
growing and that’s a good thing. There is plenty of room for both men and
women. Another misconception that exists is that men are not emotionally
suited to nursing. Being a good nurse does not need a good woman… it
needs a good human being.”

Car accidents in South Africa

According to Arrive Alive South Africa, 90% of all crashes on our roads are due to

other drivers on the roads, of course. The number of fatal accidents involving

In South Africa, speeding is a problem, with the majority of drivers simply ignoring
speed limits. In a recent case study in Mpumalanga, for instance, virtually 80% of
drivers were driving over the speed limit. Despite the risks, most teen drivers
ignore cell phone driving restrictions. Almost 50% of all drivers between the age of

QUESTION 2

Jabu is a nurse that works in a very busy hospital. He loves his job and is
respected for his dedication and professionalism. “I like working with my hands
but I like working with people too. So that made nursing perfect for me.” Some
people find it very strange that he is a man and a nurse. “Oh, you are a MALE
nurse?” they say. He answers them by saying, “I am a nurse, why do you call me
a male nurse? We don’t after all speak about MALE teachers or MALE doctors,
do we?”
Jabu admits that studying nursing was not his idea to begin with. He was in a job
that he found boring and he did not know what else to study. It was his mother,
who is a nurse, who suggested that he study nursing. My first thought was, “This
is a woman’s profession!” But here I am and I have never been happier.
“There are many myths and untruths that exist around men being nurses. Firstly,
it is not just a women’s job. The number of men in nursing is steadily growing and
that’s a good thing. There is plenty of room for both men and women. Another
misconception that exists is that men are not emotionally suited to nursing. Being
a good nurse does not need a good woman… it needs a good human being.”
