PREFACE.

The work of collecting material for this pamphlet commenced

several years ago, and has required hundreds of letters and circu
lars, which were sent to everybody I could learn of who could
probably give any desired information.
As early as 1906 the work had progressed so far that the follow
ing circular was sent out:

CALDWELL. COLDWELL. COLWELL.

OCTOBER 30, £906.

DEAR SIR:
William Coldwell, born 1695 in England, was kidnapped and im
pressed into the British navy when only sixteen years old. He de
serted at Boston in 1712. Married Jane Jordan at Stoughton,
Mass. Had a large family of children. Lived in Connecticut.
Moved to Nova Scotia, where he died in 1802, aged 107 years. His
history is full of interest, and for a long period I have been collect
ing material for a genealogy of his family, with a view to its publi
cation when conditions shall warrant it.
I wish to obtain the full name and a brief history of each member
of the family, including date and place of each birth, marriage, and
death; to whom married, with names of parents of wife or husband
(including the mother’s maiden name) ; Children; 311Places of resi
dence; occupation, or profession; when and where graduated; what
he or she has accomplished of note; the names of all who were in
the army or navy, with particulars in connection therewith; offices
or positions of trust held, and everything—‘religious, political, and
otherwise—that it may be interesting for those who come after us
to know.
Will you kindly assist in this undertaking by filling out the accom
panying blanks, adding any information, not embraced in the
answers to the printed questions thereon, on the other- side of the
sheets, or on other sheets, and return the same promptly to me?
Please give the names of your ancestors, in this line, as far back
(2)
3

as possible, with whatever of the foregoing desired information in

regard to them you can furnish. If more blanks are wanted, notify
me and they will be sent.
I would also like names and addresses of other members of the
family who can give information, and any other facts or suggestions
that will forward this work and help to make it useful and reliable.
@Please be very careful in copying records.

“The Olympia,” Washington, D. C.

I have met with cold indifference from some, but hearty and cor
dial assistance and cooperation from others.
In the summer of 1908 I made it my pleasure to visit Nova Scotia
in quest of facts and to become acquainted with my remote kinsfolk
in that locality, in whom I had become interested, and enjoyed a
most delightful and productive visit to this beautiful and interesting
region.
In order to erect a suitable monument to our first Caldwell an
cestor in America, the following was issued in November, 1908:

WILLIAM COLDWELL.

(Caldwell, Coaldwell, or Colwell, as variously spelled.)

NOVEMBER, 1908.
A history of the life of our above-named ancestor, with a record
of over 150 families and 700 descendants of the family name, has
been compiled for gratuitous distribution. A plain but substantial
monument is to be erected to his memory at Wolfville, Nova Scotia,
to be unveiled with appropriate ceremonies, including an address on
the Coldwell family in general and this branch in ‘particular, in July,
1909. A committee has been selected to carry out this plan and to
secure contributions from “descendants” in sums of $1 to $10, as
individuals may be able or disposed to give. Such contributions or
pledges should be mailed to the Treasurer, and should be made now,
so that the committee may know how much will be available for the
purpose. It is hoped that every one will feel it a privilege as well as
a duty to give something.
4

It is proposed to make the unveiling an occasion for a general

convention of the descendants of “Father William ;” a home—coming
for the many who were born in Nova Scotia, but have drifted away
from old Gaspereau, and a delightful visit to the Land of Evan
geline, and a getting acquainted with their kinsfolk, for others of
the Coldwell clan.

story is told in the following pages.
The Acadian, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, July 9, 1909.

THE COLDWELL CELEBRATION.

One of the pioneer settlers of Horton township was William Cold

well, who was born in England in 1695, came to Massachusetts in
1712, married Jane Jordan there, and removed with his family to
Nova 'Scotia in I758, leaving in Bridgewater, Mass., one son, Eben
ezer, whose descendants are found there and in other parts of the
United States.
One of these, Dr. Charles T. Caldwell, of Washington, D. C., has
for years been tracing the progeny of “Father William,” and has
now a record of over 150 families and 700 descendants. Dr. Cald
well was in Wolfville last summer for the first time, and is here
again now to take part in the family gathering. Through his sug
gestion a monument has been erected to this pioneer ancestor, and
on July 1st it was dedicated in the presence of nearly 150 descend
ants of these early settlers. The stone is of granite with a double
base, and bears the inscription:

“William Coldwell, born in England, 1695. Died Oct. 28, 1802,

at Gaspereau, N. S.; also his wife, Jane Jordan, born at Stoughton,
Mass., June I, 1707. Erected by their descendants, 1909.”

At the dedication service Rev. J. D. Spidell offered the invocation,

after which Mr. A. E. Coldwell read the following dedication:
“My dear friends, descendants of a common ancestor, whose name
we revere, whose memory we cherish, we meet here today to do
fealty to a worthy and sturdy pioneer, the brave, the honored Father
VVilliam, to whose memory we dedicate this stone.
(5)
6

“A century and a half ago he came to this country and settled in

this beautiful valley, not then as now smiling with the full fruitage
of modern agriculture, for where now orchards bloom and tilled
fields yield their wealth to the skilled husbandman was then forest
or thicket. He was one of the pioneers who broke up the virgin
soil and produced the conditions which make it possible for us, his
descendants, to surround ourselves with the comforts and blessings
which we now enjoy. ‘He labored and we have entered into his
labors.’ His children’s children unto the third and fourth genera
tions now inherit this fertile valley of the Gaspereau and these pleas
ant hillsides, and are found in the neighboring republic from Massa
chusetts to California, some of whom we are very glad to welcome
here today. In consideration, therefore, of our indebtedness to this
common ancestor, how appropriate it is that we should set up this
monument to perpetuate his memory and to be a continued reminder
to our descendants of one who encountered hard and discouraging
surroundings and manfully won his way through. We ought all to
rejoice that in this year of grace 1909 we have been moved to
commemorate the lengthy, self-denying life of our sturdy ancestor
and to set up this monument as a perpetual reminder of his sterling
worth. May our children and our children’s children in the count
less generations to come ever hold in grateful remembrance the life
of him to whom we dedicate this monument.”
The assemblage then adjourned to the grove in front of the hall
at Gaspereau, where tables were erected and an elaborate repast
provided, to which full justice was done. It was a most enjoyable
social event, a pleasant family reunion, and everything contributed
to the success of the occasion. After the banquet Dr. C. T. Caldwell
gave an historical address, which was listened to with great interest.
He traced the ancestry from France to Scotland, where three
brothers settled north of the Solway near a cold well, from which
they derived their surname, spelled and pronounced Cald north of
the Solway and Cold in England, so that the two names have the
same origin. Oliver Cromwell was descended from the family, and
they figured prominently in English and Scottish events during the
Stuarts and house of Hanover. t
THE CALDWELL NAME AND FAMILY.
Anmuzss BY C. T. CALDWELL, M. D.

In Scotland the Caldwells of Caldwell, in Ayrshire, had become

prominent as early as 1349, when they furnished William Caldwell,
a prebendary of Glasgow, for Lord Chancellor of Scotland.
Caldwell, in East Gascote Hundred, was by King Richard I given
to the Knights Templars, and, after their suppression, it was given
to the Knights Hospitallers of Jerusalem.
Armorial bearings of the name are wells, fountains, ships, waves,
fish, water fowls, and the hazel branch or divining-rod, all suggestive
of water.
In the Domesday Book, that first great record of English sur
names, compiled in the reign of William the Conqueror (1080 to
1085), we find the name recorded as Caldwell, Coaldwell, Cauldwell,
Caldewelle, and Colwell——thesame name spelled in different ways.
In those days the use of surnames in England was just becoming
common, having been introduced only a few years earlier, with the
coming of the victorious Normans, who had but recently adopted the
custom.
Surnames originated in various ways. Sometimes an individual
adopted the name of his trade or profession (Carpenter, Smith,
Tailor), or that of a color (White, Gray, Black), or an animal
(Wolf, Lyon, Martin), or,,in fact, anything that suited his fancy.
Often surnames were applied to persons or families indicating their
position in life or the locality in which they lived,
The Patronymica Britannica gives Caldwell and Coldwell as
synonymous.
In attempting to trace the name to its origin and ascertain its
meaning, we find two distinct versions, applying to difierent groups
not related to each other by ties of blood, one of Scotch the other
of Italian—French extraction, showing the origin of the name in two
ways.
The earlier Scotch families of the name are said to have derived
their surname from the fact that they, or certain individuals among
them, were reputed to possess the power of locating subterranean
springs or streams of cold water by means of the divining-rod or
witch-hazel branch. They were often called upon to select the best
8

spot for digging a well, and so became known as the cald-well people
by their Scotch neighbors.
The hazel branch, which is a symbol of wisdom, appears on their
coat of arms. Their motto was “Dare to be wise.”

THE SOLWAY BRANCH.

The origin of the name as applied to our own ancestors appears

from tradition and accounts from various sources to be as follows:
In the latter part of the fifteenth century there-lived two notorious
seafaring brothers by the name of Barbarossa who maintained a
large and powerful fleet by which they held complete mastery
of the Mediterranean. All nations of that sea paid tribute to them
and at the same time courted their friendship. Petty rulers dreaded
their power and influence, for they were in alliance with some of the
most daring spirits of Spain, France, and Scotland. Of Course they
were regarded by their friends as protectors, while by those who
happened, for the time, to be their enemies they were denounced as
pirates and freebooters. .
This company and their business flourished for about twenty
years, when they were surprised and defeated by the Galma of Hian,
a captain of a nation in Africa.
After this defeat those who escaped dispersed and settled in vari
ous parts of the world.
Three brothers, John, Alexander, and Oliver, whose ancestors fled
from the Piedmont valleys, in northwestern Italy, during the perse
cution of the Waldenses, commanded vessels under the Barbarossas.
They now settled at Mt. Arid, near Toulon, in France (their native
city), and established there a similar naval force, much feared by
their enemies as a powerful and fearless band of adventurers.
They were employed by the merchants of Lisbon, Spain, to cap
ture or destroy the pirates who infested the Mediterranean and crip
pled their commerce by preying upon their ships. For this service,
which was a benefit to France also, they each received $20,000 from
King Francis I of that country.
In the numerous minor wars of that time they were employed
by the contestants, sometimes on one side and sometimes on the
other, to wage war against and plunder the enemy, whomsoever he
might chance to be. 4
9

It so happened, in 1525, during the war between Emperor Charles

V of Germany, who was also King of Spain, and Francis I of
France, their former patron, they espoused the cause of the former,
who was finally victorious, and it is stated that by their activity and
successful exploits they so aroused the relentless enmity of the
French king that, following his release after a year of captivity,
he turned his attention to these so—called“Protestants and robbers
of Arid” and so persistently pursued them that they concluded to
leave the country. The unpleasant relations existing at this period
‘betweenthe King of France, who persecuted Protestants, and James
V of Scotland, who favored them, made them welcome to the Scot
tish realm. Consequently an agreement was entered into with this
monarch, about I530, whereby each of these brothers—John, Alex
ander, and Oliver——should, whenever requested, furnish “a son with
a troop of twenty horsemen of sound limb and fully armed, to aid
in the wars of the king.”
They were allotted a tract of land near Solway Firth, in the south
of Scotland, which, by special permission of the King, they pur
chased from a bishop named Douglas. This locality was noted for
an excellent spring or well of pure and very cold water, and was
known as the region of the “cold well.” Hence these new settlers
became known as the people of the cold—wellregion—as Alexander
-of Cold-well, or Cold—we1lAlexander, and finally Alexander Cold
well. Their neighbors being Scotch, the name was spelled Cald-well
or Cauldwell,,just as a Scotchman would naturally pronounce it.
Here they lived, accumulated property, and acquired influence.
They intermarried with the most powerful families of the land, and
became connected with the royal family. Queen Elizabeth was a
descendant of the Caldwells and their staunch friend. Joseph, John,
Andrew, and David were among the Caldwells who, in 1649, went
with their kinsman, Oliver Cromwell (whose grandmother was Anne
Caldwell, of Solway Firth), to Ireland, of which he had been made
lord or governor. Upon his promotion to the Protectorship of Eng
land, in 1653, some of these Caldwells remained in Ireland, some
returned to England, while others crossed the Atlantic and settled
in the colonies. Many of them came to America after the restoration
of Charles II, as, for obvious reasons, they were no longer in favor
at home.
10

It may be noted here that many of the Caldwell settlers in Ireland’.

adopted the Colwell manner of spelling the name, and we have a
record among the early Scotch planters of Alexander and Andrew
Colwell as lessors of the barony of Raphoe, County Donegal, in the
north of Ireland.
It is said, with some facts to support the claim, that the Coldwell
way of spelling the name originated at Ely, and that no record of
the name can be found prior to 1636, at which time Oliver Cromwell
inherited an estate there. In 1643 he was made lieutenant governor
of the Isle of Ely. Here one or more of his Caldwell cousins located
with him, and incidentally changed the spelling of the name to Cold
well to conform to the English manner of pronouncing it. I am
told that from that time to the present the church records show
births, marriages, and deaths of many members of this Coldwell
branch. They were Cromwell’s kinsmen in Scotland and they came»
with Cromwell to England. They were Caldwells in Solway and
were Coldwells in Ely, and that is all the difference there is between
these names. In our own particular line the manner of spelling
varies with the whim or fancy of the individual, or did so up to a
very recent time.
Of these Coldwells of Ely, one William Coldwell, born about the
time of their arrival, became the vicar of Wisbeach and one of the
prebendaries of the Cathedral Church at Ely, fellow of Queen’s Col
lege of Cambridge, etc., whose daughter Prudence married William
Fienes, second son of Lord Say and Sele, K. C. (Collin’s Peerage,
Vol. VII, p. 25), and whose only son, William Coldwell, Jr., born
July 20, 1673, married Mary, daughter of Thomas Edwards, of Wis
beach, died February 11, 1706, and was buried at St. Albans, in
Hertfordshire, at Welwyn Church, where a costly monument, beau
tifully sculptured with coat of arms, scroll-work of flowers, and an
elaborate inscription, was erected by the widow to his memory.
According to one tradition he was the father of our own “Father
William,” who was born 1695, and would thus have been eleven
years of age at the time of his father’s death, a point that fits re
markably well with the facts as we know them.
We now come to where we have more definite information con
cerning Father William himself——thisman who lived in three cen
turies, who died here 107 years ago, and who was born just 107
II

years earlier. We learn from several accounts that he was born in

England in 1695; that his father died when William was a mere
child, and that, when at the age of sixteen he was visiting the sea
shore and amusing himself by gathering shells on the beach, he was
“set upon by rough men,” seized, carried away, and impressed into
the British Navy. Such an act was not uncommon in those days.
It is claimed by those holding the belief that he was the son of
William Coldwell, of Hertfordshire, referred to, that his mother,
who was yet young and possessed of considerable wealth, was con
templating remarriage, to which plan the boy offered strenuous op
position. Consequently it is believed the kidnapping was connived
at by persons interested in his mother’s wealth.
Be that as it may, we have from numerous sources the fact that
when about sixteen years of age he was kidnapped and impressed
into the royal navy.
just how long he remained in the navy we do not know, but one
record locates him at Boston, Mass., in I712. Becoming dissatisfied
with his position and its hardships, so cruelly thrust upon him, he
felt that under the circumstances desertion was no disgrace. Alone
in the world, with no home ties to lure him back to England, even
. if he dared to go there, he resolved on an attempt to regain his
liberty and make for himself a home somewhere in the colony. So
one chilly day in autumn “he left the ship” without leave, and, turn-
ing his back upon the royal navy and the city of Boston, struck out
for the “blue hills” of Massachusetts and for freedom—a homeless,
friendless boy, a fugitive, a deserter—to find himself at the damp
and gloomy nightfall, footsore and hungry, seeking food and shelter
at the home of a kind-hearted farmer near Stoughton. The farmer
and his wife befriended him, and with them he lived for several
years.
Here among the granite hills of New England he grew to man
hood. Here he formed the attachment for the one who afterward’
became his wife and the great-great—great-grandmother of every one
of us in this numerous Caldwell clan. Here he established his home
and here several of his children were born. For several years we
have no definite information concerning him, but “he was one of the
first adventurers on the Isle of Sable for the relief of the distressed
castaway there.”
I2

THE ISLE OF SABLE.

Dark Isle of Mourning: aptly thou art named,
For thou hast been the cause of many a tear.
For deeds of treacherous strife too justly famed,
The At'lantic’s charne1—desolate and drear.

The work of relief for shipwrecked mariners on that bleak and

dangerous island required manhood, self-denial, and courage, as does
the duty of those in the life-saving service of today. The hardships
were probably greater then than now.
For many years prior to 1719 nothing of importance had been
undertaken in this line, but at that time, under the leadership of a
French Protestant minister, the Rev. Andrew Le Mercier, of Boston,
an effort was made to establish a permanent relief station on the
island, which was continued for more than twenty years. Just when
William Coldwell joined this colony, or how long he remained, does
not appear. It is stated that he lived for some time in Nova Scotia
prior to 1733. It was probably then that he gained his knowledge
of that country that induced him to migrate thither after the expul
sion of the Acadians.
Perhaps it was his love for a New England maiden that lured him
back to Massachusetts. At any rate, we find him back in Stoughton
in 1733, where he married Jane, daughter of Jonathan and Jane
Jordan, of that place. As the name of Jane Jordan deserves more
than mere mention, I will give the names of members of her family
as shown by Stoughton records.

Children of Jonathan and fame Jordan.‘

. John, born September 19, I71 I. Died in infancy.
. Jonathan, born December 27, I713.
. John (No. 2), born August 2, I715.
. Jane, born June I, 1717.
. Jeddediah, born September 6, I719.
O'\UI-POJNH . Jemima, born February 14, 1724.
It is quite probable that this family, or part ofyit, removed to
Connecticut with William Coldwell in 1742, as the name ceases to
be mentioned by the town records about that time, and we know by
the records of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, that Jeddediah Jordan was
13

there with his sister Jane and brother-in—law,William Coldwell, and,

like them, was among the first settlers of that town, about 1760.
In Jane Jordan, his wife for over sixty years, he found a devoted
and constant helpmeet. She was with him until her death, May 15,
1796. She was with him throughout his sojourn in Connecticut,
and with him she endured the hardships and trials of that long
journey to Nova Scotia, ever helpful, ever faithful, and a monument
to his memory would be incomplete without the mention of her name.
Their children, born at remarkably regular intervals, were——
I. William, Jr., born November 20, 1734. Married Naomi Noyce,
in 1755, and died 1756.
2. John, born 1736. Married Eleanor Hackett.
.3. Jeddediah, born September 13, 1738. Probably died in Con
necticut.
4. Jemima, born June 27, I740. Probably died in Connecticut.
5. Jane, born July 5, 1742. Married Nicholas Fielding.
6. Ebenezer, born 1744. Married Sarah Price. Died in 1827.
7. Jonathan, born 1746. Married, first, Catharine Newcomb; sec
ond, Susanna Pyke.
8. Jacob, born 1748. Married Margaret Chapman.
9. Mary, born 1750. Married Gilbert Forsythe.
IO. Eliphalet, born 1752. Married, first, Abagail Sutherland; sec
ond, Mary Pyke (?).
The exact dates of birth of some of the children are unknown,
as the public records of Fairfield, Conn., were burned by the British
troops in the Revolution.
It is interesting to note how the names of the Jordan children were
all reproduced in the William Coldwell family—a fact which shows
that “Mother Jane” had some influence in her own family. John
was the only son among those who went with the father to Nova
Scotia who was old enough in 1760 to have land allotted to him in
his own right; so that, although we have not found the exact date
of his birth, the year 1736 is probably correct, as stated in the list.
Some time between 1742 and 1744 the family removed to Bridge
port, Conn., and lived in that neighborhood until about 1757 or 1758.
The church record shows his pew—holding, and refers to him as
"Capt.” Coldwell, but I have no knowledge of how he acquired
that title. Very little is known about him during the twelve or
fourteen years he lived in Connecticut. After the expulsion of the
I4

Acadians, in 1755, the British government offered land in Nova

Scotia to loyal citizens who would go there with their families and
establish their homes. This was not the exodus of the “Tories” or
“Loyalists” from the States, as some have stated to me. It was
‘nearlytwenty years before the American Revolution and long before
the causes of that war had become acute.
As heretofore stated, his knowledge of that country induced our
hardy ancestor to make the move. Here we have an example of
what was evidently one of the dominant traits of his character.
With him determination was strong; there was no compromise, as
we know from other incidents in his career. Once resolved on
making the journey, there was no turning back, although he knew
what this migration meant for him and his family. The long, tortu
ous journey by land, to be made with household goods packed upon
wagons, made it an undertaking to cause the youthful and strong
to hesitate. Although then past his “three score years,” when most
men are thinking of retirement and the comforts of home for their
old age, he had yet more than forty years of health in store for him.
We of today, who make this journey by Pullman car and palatial
steamboat in less than twenty-four hours, have no conception of the
hardships incident to that journey of a thousand miles in the middle
of the eighteenth century (150 years ago).
In imagination we can see them wending their way along the
dusty highways, over the hills, through the meadows, crossing the
streams and rivers by ford or ferry, passing towns and toiling
through the wilderness, pausing betimes to rest and refresh them
'selves and their animals, camping at night and OV€I'Sabbath by some
wayside spring or sheltering grove, through sunshine and storm,
often weary and worn, but never despondent. Many and severe
were the hardships and trials they endured on that memorable jour
ney that made the majority of you here assembled natives of Nova
‘Scotia. No wonder that they so impressed the mind of the eleven
year-old Jonathan that they became the burden of his thought and
conversation in the last years of his long life, eighty years later.
The goal they sought was the fair Acadia, the home and birthplace
of hundreds of their descendants. _ '
The plans for the journey were laid in Connecticut. Several fam
ilies of the neighborhood were of this wagon-train of emigrants,
which was joined by others along the way. The route from Con
Is

necticut was via Stoughton, Mass., where a halt was made for
needed rest and a visit with their old friends and relatives. The
stay was for only a few days, and then the company was ready to
resume its journey, when an incident occurred that shaped the desti
nies of the son Ebenezer and his descendants. He was at that time
about thirteen years of age, and from the first had been very much
averse to the proposed emigration, strenuously but unsuccessfully
opposing it in every possible way. Whether he was encouraged by
his relatives at Stoughton to take the step we do not know, but we
do know that when the hour to move on arrived, this boy was miss
ing. Two days of delay were spent in fruitless search. Then the,
party was obliged to proceed without him, the neighbors promising
to care for him when found, and, if possible, to induce him to follow
and rejoin his father and family.
Several days passed before he was discovered in the family of
John Brett, of Bridgewater, ten miles from Stoughton. He persist
ently refused to follow the family, and became a “deserter,” as his
father had been at about the same age and in that same locality
«over forty years earlier. His “runaway” trip began at Stoughton,
where his father’s ended. He remained in Bridgewater and became
a much-respected citizen and official of the town, where he died in
1827.
It was fortunate that these two “runaway boys” fell into good
surroundings and proper influences. Each remained in the family
of his benefactor for several years." Ebenezer showed his gratitude
by purchasing the old Brett homestead, when it was about to pass
out of the family’s possession, and made it his home. He named
his first son Brett and his last one John, in honor of John Brett, who
had been his “friend in need.”
There was never a reconciliation between this truant son and his
father. With Ebenezer, as with his father, there was no compro
mise. That this'wayward one was not forgotten, but was held in .
affectionate remembrance by the family, is shown by the fact that
his youngest brother, Eliphalet, named one of his sons Ebenezer,
and the name became as common in that branch of the family as
among the descendants of Ebenezer himself.
Being thrown together with members of the Providence branch
of the family, he adopted their manner of spelling the name, and,
I6

dropping the “d,” spelled it Colwell. There was little or no commu

nication between him and other members of the family, and he “be
came as one dead” to them. They were staunch Royalists, while he
became a soldier of the Revolution. They knew of his military
service in defense of the new government, and believed a report that
while “he was with Montgomery in his expedition against Canada
he died at Lake George.” The Adjutant General’s reports show
that he served later with the “Minutemen” of Massachusetts.
While some of his relatives believed him dead, there were evi
dently some who knew of his whereabouts, for when his father died,
in 1802, he was promptly informed by the following published notice:
“HoRToN, NOVA SCOTIA, Nov. 2, 1802.
“William Coldwell died at this place October 28, 1802, in the 108th
year of his age. He was a native of England, and remembered the
coronation of Queen Anne. He served in the British Navy upward
of ninety years ago; afterwards he became a settler in New England,
and was one of the first adventurers on the Isle of Sable for the
relief of the distressed castaway there. He was one of the first
settlers here in 1760. He left behind him a numerous progeny, up
ward of one hundred of which, to the degree of great-grandchildren,
reside in this place. He generally retained his health and bodily
strength to that degree that he could cut wood and walk to his
neighbors without a staff till last year, and till his death retained
all his mental faculties to a surprising degree, and, as he lived the
life of a Christian, so at death he testified his confidence in a blissful
immortality.”
That, after all, Ebenezer cherished a love for his father is shown
by the fact that this notice was treasured and preserved among his
most valuable papers, where it was found after his death, twenty
five years afterward. It comes to us now with much information
of Father William that would otherwise have been forever lost.
One account of Father William (American Ancestry, Vol. V,
p. 187) states that he “mowed hay on his 100th birthday and signed
his name on his 102d birthday,” etc. This article gives his age as
106 at the time of his death, which is stated as 1801. As we have
the exact date of that event in 1802, his age at death was 107.
Another error is the statement that he married Abagail Sutherland,
I7

and gives the time as “about 1795,” which is evidently a mistake,

as then she was dead and he was 100 years old. See page 19.
The Sutherlands.—Tl1omas and Peleg were sons of Joseph Suther
land, who came from Scotland to Horseneck, Conn., and were neigh
bors of the Coldwell family in that State. Thomas, whose wife was
Barsheba Palmer, came with the emigrants to Nova Scotia, and was
one of the first settlers of Wolfville. Abagail, his daughter, born
1755, married Eliphalet Coldwell in 1774, died 1790, and was buried
in the cemetery at Wolfville, where her name appears on a well
preserved gravestone inscribed “Abagail, wife to Eliphalet Coald
well.” Thomas returned to the States and died there in 1807. Peleg
Sutherland did not migrate to Nova Scotia. “He lost his life at that
memorable event when Tryon with a band of British and Tories
burnt the town of Fairfield” (Orcutt’s Bridgeport, Conn., p. 1107).
After the arrival of the emigrants in Nova Scotia they settled
on the Gaspereau River, William Coldwell drawing land on both
sides of the stream and on the marsh. He was allotted ground in
the townsite of Wolfville.
After a residence of three years in the locality, as required, we
find the following record entries:
May 27, 1761. William Coldwell (and others), 100,000 acres at
’ Horton. Record Book 3, page 31.
October 15, 1765. William Coldwell (and others), 100,000 acres
near Liverpool. Record Book 6, page 402.
October 15, 1765. William Coldwell (and others), 100,000 acres
at Pictou. Record Book 6, page 405.
October 15, 1765. William Coldwell (and others), 200,000 acres
at Liverpool. Record Book 6, page 411.
October 31, 1765. William Coldwell (and others), 100,000 acres
at Shedudabock. Record Book 6, page 488.
November 21, 1766. William Coldwell, license to alienate 450
acres. Record Book 6, page 616.
November 21, 1766. John Coldwell, license to alienate 225 acres.

The purpose of these extensive grants of land, that in most cases

“reverted to the crown,” is not known, but it is supposed that Wil
liam Coldwell acted in some way as an agent for the settlement of
these localities, and that he held the land in trust for disposal to
other settlers.
The land that he held and lived upon is located in one of the
most beautiful and picturesque valleys it has ever been my pleasure
to behold. '
I have been told that when the country began to fill up with new
settlers, between 1760 and I770, the inhabitants in the vicinity of
Wolfville were of many religious denominations, but from necessity
they formed one non-sectarian congregation and lived in harmony
under this plan for several years. Then it was decided by a majority
vote of the members to change it to a church of the Baptist denomi
nation, in order to secure the services of a pastor who was very
much desired and who happened to be of that faith. Consequently
the Coldwells, who were before that time Episcopalians, became
Baptists. and so we find them today in that neighborhood nearly all
adherents to the Baptist faith.
I have made many efforts to ascertain how our respected ancestor
spelled his name in aifixing his signature, but the only example I
have so far been able to find is the record of the deed by which he
conveyed his holdings at Stoughton, Mass., wherein the name is
spelled Coaldwell. In the record of his marriage, also, it appears as
Coaldwell.
Some of his descendants omitted the “a,” others dropped the “O,”
and at least one cut out both “a” and “d” as superfluous.
It is said that a short time before his death he walked unaided
from his home to the house of his son Jonathan, more than a mile
distant.
Facts concerning the experiences of these early settlers would be
interesting, but the time is becoming so remote and records are so
few and scant that it seems impossible to obtain more,
We dedicate today a monument to the memory of “Father Wil
liam” and “Mother Jane.” Our records when published will be
another monument to their memory, that may go to the homes of
their many descendants, now scattered from Nova Scotia to Cali
fornia, and from Porto Rico to Alaska.

North Bridgewater, Mass., Ga5ette.—About I830. Stoughton
items. William Caldwell the 13th on the parish tax-list of 1745.
He was taxed in the town tax—listof 1742. Not in tax-list of 1727
nor 1730. He came from Nova Scotia (see page 12), and there is
a tradition in the family that he deserted from a British ship-of—war.
His wife was a daughter of Jonathan Jordan, Sr., a resident of this
parish, as seen by the tax-list.
William Caldwell had, so far as we know, one son only,* Ebenezer
Colwell, who settled in West Bridgewater and married Sarah Price,
daughter of Benjamin Price, Sr., of Bridgewater. He owned and
dwelt upon the homestead estate of Elihu Brett, Esq., judge of the
Court of Common Pleas of Plymouth County. The children of
Ebenezer Colwell were Brett, I771; Keziah, I775; Ebenezer, 1799;
Sally, 1781; Melvin, 1786, and John, 1791.

NOTE.

I have taken the most reliable information I could obtain for the
lists I have prepared. There are some branches I have been unable
to trace, about which I hope to learn more in the near future.
No attempt has been made to include descendants not bearing the
family surname, as, owing to the difiiculty of such a task, the record
would necessarily be far from complete.
Where errors or omissions occur, I would appreciate a correction
from any one who can furnish correct data or give additional infor
mation, in order that any later edition may be more accurate and
comprehensive.
