Checklist for a German national visa

- Students -

For the application you require the following documents:


 valid passport issued within the last 10 years and with at least 2 empty pages
 Application form & declaration (in accordance with Section 54 of the Residence Act)
duly signed (2 copies)
 Declaration for Additional contact and legal representation information (2
copies)

 3 current, identical biometric passport photos


 Copy of your passport’s data page (A4 size copy) (2 copies)
 APS Certificate
An APS Certificate is always mandatory, unless one of the following conditions apply:
 You obtain a non-German Degree in Germany
 You intend to do PhD / Post Doc studies in Germany
 You have received a scholarship / stipend from German or EU public funds
 Your studies built on a non-Indian school graduation certificate (e. g.
International Baccalaureate etc.) or non-Indian degree (e. g. British Bachelor,
Turkish Master etc.)
 Letter of Admission from German university or Letter of Admission to a preparatory
college (Studienkolleg) or Registration for a language course
Letters of Admission have to include confirmation of the language of instruction and
confirmation should a non-German degree be awarded
 Proof of financial means to cover the costs for the time of your studies by one of the
following documents:
 Proof of a “Sperrkonto” (blocked account) in Germany with sufficient funds for
your first year of studies, currently amounting to 11,208,-- EUR and
confirmation that no more than 934,-- EUR per month can be withdrawn OR
 “Verpflichtungserklärung” (formal obligation letter) by a sponsor living in
Germany OR
 Proof of a German / EU scholarship or stipend

 Proof of previous academic qualifications


Bachelor Studies: University Degrees (if applicable), Diploma Certificate, Mark
sheets, 12th and 10th Mark Sheets
Master Studies: Bachelor’s Degree, other University Degrees if applicable, Diploma
Certificate
PhD / Post Doc: Master’s Degree, other University Degrees if applicable

 Current Proof of language proficiency in German or English (depending on the
language of instruction and not necessary if the Letter of Admission confirms sufficient
language proficiency) – not older than 1 year
English: TOEFL, IELTS
German: Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD
 If your university charges tuition/study fees:
Proof of payment of tuition/study fees – not applicable for studies at public
universities
 Curriculum Vitae
 Duly signed motivation letter / statement of purpose, explaining the motivation for
the chosen subject, study in Germany and the chosen university
 travel health insurance covering the first 90 days starting with and including your
intended date of entry into Germany

Please prepare two identical sets of applications. Copies have to be size A4.
On the date of the visa appointment, you must have originals of all documents with you.

Please note that the German Missions in India reserve the right to ask for additional documents
or the verification of certificates, for which additional fees would be charged.

As your application will be forwarded to the competent Aliens’ Authorities in Germany, the
processing of your application will take six to eight weeks.

The submission of the above-mentioned documents does not guarantee that a visa is granted.
Submission of incomplete documentation or refusal to appear for a visa interview may result
in the rejection of your application. Making untrue statements and/or handing in documents
that do not reflect the truth will result in a rejection of your application.
