Promoting Inclusivity of LGBTQ
INTRODUCTION
In a transcending and diverse world, it is important to have inclusivity in different fields or aspects,
particularly in schools since it serves as the second home for students. The LGBTQ+ community, encompassing
individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions, is still experiencing
dilemmas, especially in school settings. Students who are members of LGBTQ+ are still being discriminated
against and marginalized by other students and teachers. With these kinds of problems, a lot of LGBTQ+ are
afraid to show to school their true colors and uncomfortable because they feel that they do not belong.
In able to disseminate and address these issues, we propose an impactful project entitled “Promoting
Inclusivity of LGBTQ+ in Schools.” This project aims to ensure safe and inclusive learning for all students in
Kidapawan City National High School. With this project, we can create an educational system that celebrates
diversity, fosters understanding, and offers support to LGBTQ+ students. Also, this program aims to make
LGBTQ+ students feel that they are heard, seen, and understood. This project would like to implement
programs, organizations, and school activities that are exclusive to LGBTQ+, which would showcase the different
talents that LGBTQ+ students possess and would give them an equal opportunities in school.
By addressing the needs and challenges of LGBTQ+ individuals in school settings, we strive to not only
eliminate discrimination but also empower all students to thrive academically and personally, regardless of their
sexual orientation or gender identity. This proposal outlines the project's objectives, scope, activities, and
expected outcomes, emphasizing the significance of inclusivity and the role of educational institutions in
creating a more accepting and equitable society. Moreover, we can create a school that is safe, free, and
inclusive for everyone.
PURPOSE/PROBLEM STATEMENT
While the educational climate at KCNHS is undeniably progressive and committed to creating a more
inclusive community, it's imperative to acknowledge that prejudice against LGBTQ+ students still lingers.
Regrettably, many students within the KCNHS community have encountered hurtful remarks and discriminatory
acts based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. In light of these challenges, it becomes increasingly
clear that fostering a truly welcoming and safe space, where every individual, regardless of their sexual
orientation or gender identity, feels appreciated and respected, is not only a noble aspiration but an urgent
necessity.
The core goals of this project are to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender
identity, has equal rights and opportunities within the school environment. It is about recognizing and
celebrating diversity while striving for equality. Inclusivity stands as the cornerstone of this endeavor, for it not
only nurtures a sense of belonging but also grants every student the freedom to express themselves
authentically, unburdened by the fear of prejudice.
Through this project, we aim to build on the existing commitment to progressiveness at KCNHS, addressing
the residual prejudices and further nurturing the inclusive spirit of the educational community. Our mission is
not just to advocate for change but to be the agents of change, ensuring that LGBTQ+ students and their allies
can pursue their educational journeys in an environment that upholds the principles of acceptance, respect, and
equality. In the pages that follow, we will delve into the project's objectives, strategies, and anticipated
outcomes to illuminate how we intend to translate these ideals into practical, transformative actions.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
It is proposed that a program focusing on inclusivity among students, specifically those who belong to the
LGBTQ+ community should be implemented. This program aims to provide all students equal opportunities for
personal and academic growth, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. This will be
conducted under the supervision of guidance counselors, faculties, and teachers with requested funds totaling
Php. 77,000. Creating inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ students contributes to a positive educational environment
for all. This program proposal seeks to foster understanding, acceptance, and support, ultimately benefiting the
entire educational community.
OBJECTIVES
In the study of Kearns et al. (2014), it was found out that teachers who are aware of LGBTQ issues develops
skills that proactively create inclusive environments. By this, teachers incorporate anti-discrimination in their
teaching practice which is a key component of school and education reform. Additionally, according to Clay
(2014), awareness regarding LGBTQ+ protected students who belong to this group by implementing policies.
A research of Patten (2013) stated that in a Pew Research Center survey of LGBT Americans, it was found
out that LGBTQ events are important to make society more accepting.
On the basis of a study conducted by McGlashan & Fitzpatrick (2017), LGBTQ students in one school in
Auckland, New Zealand often meet to discuss issues, support each other and to plan activist initiatives. It was
found out that the initiatives made an impact in their school environment and made the LGBTQ students more
visible.
PROJECT DESIGN
The first component of this project is the LGBTQ Awareness Workshops. Organize workshops or seminars for
students, teachers, and staff to educate them about LGBTQ issues, terminology, and the importance of inclusion.
These sessions can help dispel myths and foster understanding. The workshops can cover topics such as gender
identity, sexual orientation, coming out, and the importance of inclusive language. These sessions help dispel
stereotypes and create a more informed and empathetic school community.
B. Ally Training Programs
Another phase of this project is to develop programs that empower students and teachers to become LGBTQ
allies. These programs can provide training on how to support and stand up for LGBTQ peers, creating a more
inclusive environment.Participants learn about the experiences of LGBTQ individuals, the role of allies in
promoting inclusion, and strategies for providing support and standing up against discrimination or bullying.
They also cover how to create safe spaces for LGBTQ students. These programs help create a network of
informed and supportive allies within the school.
Celebrate LGBTQ History Month with educational activities, guest speakers, including LGBTQ activists and
historians, can share their knowledge and personal stories. Activities can include classroom discussions, film
screenings, and presentations that highlight the achievements of LGBTQ figures in various fields.
This month-long focus helps raise awareness of LGBTQ history and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ rights.
Encourage the formation of GSAs in schools, where LGBTQ and allied students can come together to support
one another, raise awareness, and plan events that promote inclusivity, such as Pride Month activities. GSAs are
a grassroots way to foster a sense of belonging and unity within the school.
