PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
Instructor: Francis Ann Baucan
Sheryn Turkle’s book, The Flight of Conversation, tackles about how the current
generation are losing the interest to develop the ability of conversing and communicating
verbally and physically. There are so many points that she stated on her article. That
includes how the people are driven and adapting towards a technological universe, the
ability of technology to create linkages and connection through new forms of
communication, and her idea of how technological advancement hinders us to
communicate towards the society. That raises our awareness of how the method of
communication gradually changes overtime especially with the advent of technology that
takes over the traditional way of conversing. We can see how the author inserted so much
impact to us as a reader and as a part of the generation that we are in.
In the effects of technology towards communication, humans tend to lack the
essence social ability. There is a reducing state of interpersonal skills since they are stuck
on their own social place, holding their phones and minding their own business. They are
having the capability of creating their own world instead of having the idea of blending to
the word. They lack of sincerity in talking. They tend to limit themselves to conversing
because they don’t know how to construct conversation. Just like the scenario of having a
family dinner. Instead of talking about each other’s day and how is it going, their eyes are
sticked to their phones and just check on them through their day-to-day posts on
Instagram or Facebook instead. Finding friends online are as easy as cooking eggs. The
downsides for it? they don’t know which ones are trusted or not. The author is sincerely
implying that in order for us to develop ones’ self is to have the ability to interact and
socialize physically not just by tapping the screen and sharing posts just like the new
trend. The people’s interaction with each other and the effects they have to one another is
an aspect in which we have to consider with regards to the development of a person.
We cannot also deny the fact how our technology widens our capabilities to connect
and engage worldwide. Its wide-ranging advancement made us access any information
that was lacking in the old generation. But the author implies strong stand of how it
became a hindrance for us as a person to the actual experiences. She mentioned how
artificial intelligence has become an idea of the present in which it is invented to socialize
with us humans. I agree with the author’s idea of how can we connect with those robots
that doesn’t have feelings and emotions and also doesn’t have any experiences compared to
us? With that, while our generation is having a continual change, we should learn how to
set boundaries between those things that we know that could help us grow.
