When the Apollo space flight appeared in the 1960’s, there was a small girl lived in
Chicago watched in wonder, saying softly to herself, This is my dream job. After that this
thoughtful girl did not stop to reflect upon being a female as well as an African American
or about the odds against her becoming an astronaut. Mae Jemison steadfastly believed
this was her true destiny. She realized that education was her pathway to the stars. With
her parents support, she could accomplish her mission. She prepared herself with reading
books on astronomy and other sciences, and she devoured science fiction as well. Her feet
were planted firmly in the ground, but she was reaching to the stars. In 1987, the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected Jemison for the Astronaut Corps.
On September 12, 1992 she blasted into orbit aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. As a
chief researcher on that seven days mission, her main task was study bone tissue during
the period of weightlessness.

3. To begin with, use mobile phones is one of popular methods for people to communicate,
relax and doing business. By using call or video phone, text message, we are able to
keeping in touch together despite a long distance. These days, with the significant
development of cell phones, they enable users to entertain such as surfing the Internet,
send photos or downloading videos and games. According to research, the number of
people accessing the web through mobile phones is now accounting for well over 15% of
worldwide Internet usage. Furthermore, some Office applications for mobile phones, for
example, Microsoft Office is helping employees do their business more effective.
Although it is true that people are now getting a number of advantages from mobiles, but
these communication technologies also have several negative impacts. Firstly, using cell
phones too much will probably being harmful for human's health as it can increase the risk
of brain cancer. In addition, children are spending a lot of their free time using mobiles
with the purpose of chatting or playing games. This is time consuming and affects
negatively on their studies. Lacking of face-to-face communication is also the result of
used mobiles. Instead of going out or dating, many people prefer to stay at home and to
use their cell phones connecting to others.
4. Crime scene investigators are about to get assist from the land of the pharaohs. New
researches has shown that a pigment called Egyptian blue, formulated some 5,250 years
ago, can be used for dusting powder to detect fingerprints on complicated surfaces.
The earliest known synthetic pigment Egyptian blue is found in some of the paint that still
color ancient statues, coffins, and tomb walls. Modern scientists were intrigued in this
long-lasting tint and figured out its chemical components decades ago. More recently they
discovered that it emits near-infrared radiation when exposed to a certain kind of light.
Researchers have now demonstrated forensic potential of that rare, invisible luminescence.
After a crime is committed, police may dust relevant surfaces with a powder of contrasting
color. The powder sticks with the unique features of any fingerprints, providing visual
proof that an individual was there. But prints may be hard to pick out on a shiny or highly
pattern surface. That’s where Egyptian blue can make a difference.
5. In order to enjoy a full life in one's later years, it is vital to maintaining close relationships
and to keep physical active. To involve oneself in absorb interests is important, as this
involvement encourages a person to expand and engage in healthy activity.
Their is example after example to illustrate how rewarding life can be an older age. For
instance, an elderly widower in california has learnt how to knit, an activity that allows
him not only artistic expression, but also opportunities meeting women available to
socialize with. Now he is so often invite to dine at ladies' homes that he hasn't needed to
cook a meal in four months. On New York State, an eighty-two-year-old grandma took up
to run six year ago and last year ran all twenty-six miles of the New York Marathon. this
year she expects to be awarded a prize for having made a most improvement in speed
within one year. In short, older people should avoid to be alone.
6. In the small Umagic office on midtown Manhattan, a team of 30 computer programmers is
working on setting up websites that will allow subscribers to feed in details about
themselves and their problem, and to receive advice from ‘virtual’ versions of
personalities regarded as experts in their fields: for example, a well-known dietician, a
celebrity fitness trainer, psychologist well known in the media for the work on parent-child
relationships. Umagic Systems is a young firm and it’s hard to predict how far they’ll go.
In ten years’ time, consult a computer about your diet problems might seem natural, or it
might seem absurd. But the company and others like it are beginning to seriously worry
large American firms, who see such half crazy new and innovative ideas as a threat to their
own future success.
Innovation became a major concern of American management. Firms have found that it is
increasingly difficult to redesign existing products or producing them more economically.
The stars of American business tend today to be innovators such as Amazon and Wal-Mart
have produced completely new ideas or products that have changed their industries.
7. Recent international research describes a diminishing interest in leisure reading for most
all western countries. In this article, we have investigated trends in leisure reading of
Dutch population between 1955 and 1995, using data from seven national representative
time budget surveys. First, our results show that the time spend in reading has diminished
by about half. The strongest decline, especially for books, was found during the initial
phase of television (1955–1975). More specifically, the long-term decline in reading can
attribute to a shrinking portion of the population that reads with a regular basis. Second,
with regardless to differences between social categories, we observed a steeper decline for
men than for women. In 1995, as consequence, women on average read more than men.
Also, we found that reading is in retreat through cohort replacement. Among post-war
generations, each newly entering five-year cohort spent a lower percentage of leisure time
to reading than its immediate predecessor. Third, four possible explanations for the
observed downward trend in reading were examined. The combination of paid work and
domestic tasks among the post-war generations, and the increase diversity in leisure
activities, explained part of the observed decline.

9. Growing up in Park City Utah, the five kids of Lora and Nestly Dunts experienced the
benefits of love close family ties and suitable housing, food, and clothing. That Mr. and
Mrs. Dunts lack of education did not hinder there quest to lead the children down a path to
better life. While traveling this path, these parents taught their kids important values,
lessons and experience about life, work, and education. These values has consistently
guided their fourth child, Ralph Dunts, Sr., who has become one of the most dedicate,
effective and powerful government leaders in North Carolina’s history.
In 1951, Mr. Dunts enrolled in Utah University in Utah, Western America, on a work aid
scholarship. Then he had to interrupt his education in 1953 he left to serve his country
during the korean war. He returned to the University in 1955 and graduated a year later
with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. In 1960, he earned a master degree from North
Carolina Central University.
10. We live in the environment that is polluted, we need a health environment in order to
survive. We need protecting the environment now to help prevent health problems, and to
preserve the Earth for our children. We all know that pollution from factories and cars can
cause huge damage to the atmosphere. It makes the air dirty. Breathing this air cause lung
diseases, particularly for children and the elderly. We need to control the amount of
pollution we produce in order to prevent health problems. Furthermore, we also need to
pay attention to the ecosystem. Plant life, animal life, and people all depend on each other.
Polluting environment disturbs our ecosystem. For example, pollution might cause certain
kinds of plants to die. If these plants are food for some certain kind of animals, they will
die too. If people use these animals as food source, there could being a big problem. To
avoid the big problems, factories should pollute as little as possible. If we do not protect
our environment, it will continue to get worse. That leads our children to suffer the
consequences. The air and water will be dirtier, nature resources will become scarer, and
more plants and animals will die. Even worse, their well-being will threaten. In short, with
contaminated air breathe, an unhealthy ecosystem, that’s the bad future for our generation,
the human race will not survive. That is why protect our environment is crucial.
11. A healthy mind lives in a healthy body” is a saying that is believing to have often been
used by the ancient Greeks. Thousands of years later, the same idea still applied.
According to health experts, it’s advisable to drink eight to ten glasses of water every day.
However, water itself is not enough, a balance diet is essential, too.
A healthy body naturally is the result of doing exercises. Many people, therefore, do not
like gyms and object to going there for different reasons. Some, for instance, say that
aerobic sessions are too difficult to follow when others claim that gyms are just too
expensive. Many people also claim that they have difficulty in finding time to exercise
thanks to their hectic lifestyle, but the truth is that everyone can make a little time every
now and then. Regarding of the way people choose to exercise, it is important to
remember that there’s no point in doing it only for a short period of time.
Last but not least, having a positive attitude and do away with negative thoughts
contributes to one’s well-being. In short, follow this simple advice surely helps in having a
healthy mind and body.
12. English has complicated sets of grammar rules, which make it a challenge language to
master. Many non-native learners struggle with these rules and encounter with difficulties
in understanding them. Malaysian students, in particularly, are unable to apply the
different parts of speech and type of tense in English accurately in their speaking and
writing. Hence, using the right approach to teach grammar is essential to help the students
learn effectively. This paper presents survey study of an innovation project titled Mind
Your Grammar! It is a language board game, designed specifically for the beginner-level
learners of English, both in school and higher learning institutions. When learning
grammar becomes a game, it takes away the monotony that appears to associate with it.
Instead, the game aspect comes to the foreground where the learners are believed that they
are playing a game; thus, this will enable for the language teachers to retain their interest
without making them bored or anxious. The board game is a useful tool for teaching and
learning the English grammar items, which could help reduce the learners’ anxiety and
motivate them in learning process.
13. Fast food was not fashionable worldwide until the 1970s but, in fact, fast food restaurants
had existed in the US long before that. Drive-in restaurants had opened in the 1940s as
restaurant owners took advantage of the growing popularity of cars. Meals are designed so
that knife, spoons or forks were not needed, a concept which sounded like madness at the
time to people who were used to eat at a table. The restaurants were successful however
and this led to fast food becoming increasingly common around the world. Today, most
cities have a widely variety of fast-food restaurants, despite of drive-in restaurants are not
popular everywhere. The most recent trend has been the introduction of options as salads
and fish to menus, giving dinners a wider choice. Another changing has taken place
because there is more interesting in protecting the environment. Many restaurants are now
using recycled packaging as it has become unacceptable for so much packaging to just be
thrown away.
14. The word robot first appeared in a 1921 stage play by Czech writer Karel Capek. In play, a
man makes a machine that can think, which he calls a robot and which end up killing its
owner. In the 1940s, the American science fiction writer Isaac Asimov wrote a series of
stories about robots and invent the term robotics, the science of robots. Meanwhile, in the
real world, the first robots were developed by an engineer, Joseph F. Engelberger, and
inventor, George C. Devol. Together they had set up Unimation, a manufacturing company
who produced the first real robot in 1961, named the Unimate. Robots of this type were
installing at a General Motors automobile plant and proved to be a success. They worked
reliably and saved money for general motors, so other companies were soon acquiring
robots as well. These industrial robots were nothing like the terrified creatures that can
often be seen in science fiction films. In fact, these robots looked and behaved nothing as
humans. They were simply pieces of computer-controlling machinery, with metal “arms”
or “hands”.
