EHR and the Quality of Nursing

Positive Impacts of EHR

In the modern medical landscape, technological advancements and other innovations

have facilitated the development and adoption of new strategies for efficiency and improved

outcomes. One of these technologies is electronic health records (EHR) systems, which has

significantly positively impacted nursing outcomes. One of these impacts is that it facilitates

better care coordination, allowing nurses to keep up to date with real time patient information

such as diagnosis, test results and history (Reegu et al., 2023). As a result, different departments

are able to collaborate effectively in patient treatment, exchanging vital patient information

promptly and making informed decisions.

Another positive impact of EHR systems is that they facilitate a comprehensive view of

the patient fostering holistic approach to efficient healthcare treatment and outcomes (Reegu et

al., 2023). These systems ensure continuous patient records in one place, allowing nurses and

other healthcare practitioners to track treatment response and recovery processes and make

informed decisions for effective outcomes.

Concerns and Addressing Them

However, despite these positive impacts, EHR implementation may be prone to certain

concerns. One of the main concerns revolves around data privacy and security given the

susceptibility to cyber attacks and other forms of data breaches (Parkavi et al., 2023). These

attacks may pose significant privacy and security concerns including the risk of identity theft,

blackmail and fraud. To address this concern, implementing measures such as data encryption,

administrative safeguards, firewalls and antivirus software, strong user authentication systems,

compliance with HIPAA regulations and regular staff training on cybersecurity is essential

(Parkavi et al., 2023).

Besides, another significant concern of EHR is data errors especially during the data

entry stage. Despite the continuous training required for effective EHR systems implementation,

mistakes may occur during the data entry stage feeding other healthcare departments inaccurate

data. These inaccuracies may negatively impact the patient diagnosis, treatment and outcomes

across multiple departments and practitioners which may be harmful to the patient (Parkavi et al.,

2023). As a result, one of the most effective measures to address this concern is through

continuous training on double checking data before and after entry before uploading and how to

eradicate these errors.
