3. The postmaster of a local post office wishes to hire extra helpers during the Deepawali
season, because of large increase in the volume of mail handling and delivery. Because of the
limited office space and the budgetary conditions, the number of temporary helper’s must
not exceed 10. According to past experience, a man can handle 300 letters and 80 packages
per day, on the average, and a woman can handle 400 letters and 50 packages per day.
The postmaster believes that the daily volume of extra mail and packages will be no less than
3400 and 680 respectively. A man receives tshs.22500 a day and a woman receives
tshs.20000 a day. How many men and women helpers should be hired to keep the pay-roll at
a minimum? Formulate an LLP and solve it graphically.

4.(a) The frequency distribution of a variable 𝑥 is classified in equal intervals of

Size c. The frequency in a class is denoted by f and the total frequency is N.
If the data are coded into a variable 𝑢 by means of the relation 𝑥 = 𝑎 + 𝑐𝑢,
where x takes the central values of the class intervals, show that the mean x̅
the standard deviation 𝑠 of the distribution is given by

𝑥̅ = 𝑎 + 𝑐𝑢̅

∑ 𝑓𝑢 2 ∑ 𝑓𝑢 2
𝑠2 = 𝑐 2 { −( ) } where 𝑁 = ∑ 𝑓

3% buy B and C and 4% buy A and C. If 2% families buy all the three newspapers.
Find:
(i) The number of families which buy newspaper A only.
(ii) The number of families which buy at least one newspaper
(iii) The number of families which buy none of A, B and C
