Objective
To provide an update on the new washpipe seal design that improves service life when using water-based
muds and to also advise of a new torque wrench for torquing the upper and lower nut. This latest revision
corrects the description of the contents of the 4.0” Bore Face Seal kit.

Issue
NOV (Deublin) washpipes are designed for use when drilling with oil-based mud (OBM), synthetic-based
mud (SBM), and water-based mud (WBM), but past field reports have indicated that the service life was
less for washpipe seals used with WBM, compared to those drilling with OBM (Figure 1).

Replaceable seal rings

Figure 1. NOV (Deublin) Washpipe Assembly

In 2020, NOV started receiving customer reports describing failures with the ceramic/metal seals involving
the cracking of the ceramic portion of the seal. The washpipes were in operation and the failures occurred
during either initial or periodic static pressure tests by customers. The reports indicated that the lower
seals cracked at approximately 5,000 psi (345 bar) when pressure testing.

During this same period of time, a second issue presented itself, unrelated to the performance of the
washpipe seals, but related to the washpipe assembly. Damage to the washpipe and bonnet was being
reported, whose root cause was determined to be the result of loosening of the lower nut of the Deublin
washpipe assembly (Figure 2). The recommended torque for tightening the lower nut, which was set at
200 ft-lbs (271 Nm), was found to be inadequate when exposed to heavy vibration.

Solution
The nature of WBM fluid properties is a lower viscosity and a higher surface tension, as compared to OBM
and SBM. These properties of WBM impact the lubricating capability resulting in an increased operating
temperature and surface wear rate. These conditions potentially accelerate the wear rate of the seals and
reduce the expected service life. The increased wear rate is typically indicated by an increasing amount of
fluid seepage between the seals over time and ultimately diminishes the service life of the replaceable
seal rings.

Over the last ten years, NOV and Deublin have jointly been investigating and improving the service life of
the Deublin washpipe when drilling with WBM. Multiple seal designs were both factory tested by Deublin
and field tested by our customers. This testing was executed under controlled conditions documenting
mud type used, pressure, rpm, and temperature.

The culmination of this development program resulted in the introduction of the ELS seals. The ELS seals
are identical to the previous seal designs, with the exception of the ceramic portion of the seal, which has
been hardened to provide better wear characteristics and a doubling of the service life. The new design is
interchangeable with the previous versions.

To address the potential for loosening of the lower nut during high vibratory surface drilling, Deublin has
introduced a torque wrench for tightening of the upper and lower nuts of the washpipe assembly. The
torque wrench, which is being provided in place of the tightening bar, is preset to 250 ft-lbs (339 Nm),
which will provide a 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) torque at the upper and lower nut. The torque requirement for
the upper and lower nuts of the Deublin Washpipe is being increased from a 200 ft-lbs (271 Nm) to a 300
ft-lb (407 Nm) torque value. The torque wrench also includes a safety securing lanyard for working at
heights (Figure 3). The new Torque Wrench Kit (P/N 30182002-502), includes the torque wrench, ½”
Reversible Ratcheting Wrench, and ¾” Ratcheting Wrench.

The TDX-1000 uses a M614003598 Deublin Washpipe design, which does not utilize an upper and lower
nut, so the torque wrench is not applicable.
