Tanmay---Good Morning Everyone! Today we are here to present our bio gd. Our topic for the same is
“Discuss the factors affecting the absorption of water.” The group members are Vaidik, Vedatman,
Tanmay, Tarini and Yasar. So let’s precede it without any further delay.

Vaidik – It is important to first know that “Why is water absorption important in plants? ”

Water supply is an important factor that influences all plant activities such as photosynthesis, internal
water balance, and so on. Water loss in plants can cause leaf wilting, stomatal closure and reduction in
photosynthetic activity.

Tarini - Now, let’s know some of the factors affecting the absorption of water

 Water is lost from plants due to transpiration from aerial parts. This creates a transpiration pull
in the vascular system which is ultimately responsible for passive absorption of water from the
soil.
 Higher amount of water in the soil results in poor aeration of the soil retarding metabolic
activities such as respiration in root cells and thereby the rate of water absorbtion is reduced.
 Soil temperature- Soil temperature is known to influence water absorption below and ultimately
transpiration to a considerable extent. In many plants, water absorption below a soil
temperature of 10°C is reduced sharply and 25°c sail temperature up take of water is slowed
down

Tanmay-

 If there is no transpiration, no water will move up the plant via transpiration pull. The leaves
won’t get water and the process of photosynthesis will not occur and the plant will eventually
die.
 One of the obvious effects of drought on soil health is the lack of nutrient uptake by crops, as
water is the major medium for moving nutrients into plants as a result of water uptake
 The ground’s warmth affects various plant processes, such as nutrient and water uptake and
root growth. It has also been shown that nitrogen uptake varies both in quantity and form
depending on the thermal conditions of the ground. Therefore, the ground’s temperature is
even more influential on plant growth than air warmth.

vedatman-

 Soil air: For proper air supply, there should be space between soil particles. Since the soil
contains high amounts of carbon dioxide, oxygen levels may become limited. Since plants must
have oxygen to live, it is important to allow proper aeration in the soil.
 If the cell sap of root hair contains high concentration of ions then more water will enter the
root cells by osmosis. This is because due to greater amount of ion the root cells become
hypertonic with respect to the surrounding. Hence, they absorb more water from the
surroundings to balance the concentration on both the sides.
YASAR-

 Root hairs act like a sponge and they absorb nutrients and water from the soil which is
necessary for the growth of the plant. The number of root hairs increases the absorption of
water and nutrients from the soil. If roots hairs are absent then the plant will not be able to get
the water and nutrients which are necessary ultimately it will die.
 Roots are denied sufficient air when the soil does not allow for air. The two main causes of this
are over-watering and soil decay. Soils that are heavily saturated with water have almost no air.
If the amount of oxygen is reduced, the amount of carbon dioxide increases. When this
happens, the roots cannot breathe, causing root failure.

Now, we are here with some trivia facts

As we all know that roots of the plant help in absorbtion of water, but this is partially correct, the whole
root is not designed to absorb water there is a specific part/zone in the root, i.e. the zone of cell
maturation. It has root hair which helps in water absorbtion, the root hair is just the elongation of the
cell wall of the root. We know that The root hair absorbs water but there are 4 types of water –

Ran away water , Gravitational water, Hygroscopic water & Capillary Water

Out of them, the root hair absorbs Capillary water which is the water present between the soil particles.
