Q.1: An observer sees two spaceships flying apart with speed 0.99c. What is the speed
of one spaceship as viewed by the other?
Q.2: A rod of proper length ! is oriented parallel to x-axis in a frame S and is moving with
a speed u along the same direction. Find its length in a frame S’ that is moving with speed
v along the +x-direction of S.
Q.3: Two identical space ships, each 200 m long in their rest frame, pass one another
traveling in opposite directions. The relative velocity between the ships is 0.58 c. (i) As
measured by a passenger in one of the ship, how long does it take for the other ship to
completely pass by the other ship? (ii) What is the length of each spaceship in a reference
frame in which both have equal lengths?
Q.5: An observer on earth notices two rockets A and B at x=0 and t=0. According to this
observer the rocket B is moving in +x direction with speed 0.6 c, while the rocket A moves
in –x direction with the same speed. The watches of the observers sitting in the two
rockets also show a zero time at this instant. After one second, as measured in Earth’s
frame, rocket B emits a light signal in –x direction. What is the time in the watches of
observers on earth and in Rockets A and B, when light signal reaches A.
Q.6: Using the equations of velocity transformations, find an equation relating the
magnitude of the speeds of the two particles in S and S’ frames. What conclusions can
be drawn from this equation about the magnitudes of the speeds as seen in S and S’
frames ?
Q.7: An observer in frame S sees a pulse of light emitted from origin at t=0, which is
( )
moving in x-y plane making an angle of tan-1 3 with x-axis. Use velocity transformation
4
to find the velocity vector in a frame S’ which is moving relative to S with a speed of 0.6
c. Verify that the speed of light is same in this frame as in frame S. Find the location of
the pulse at t=2x10-6 s in S and at t’=2x10-6 s in S’, assuming the pulse to be highly
localized.
Q.8: A ray of light is emitted at an angle 60o from positive x-axis and 45o from positive y-
axis in a frame S. In another frame S’, moving along x-axis, the light appears to me moving
in y’-z’ plane. Find the relative speed of S’ in S frame. Confirm that in S’ frame, the speed
of light is retained as c.
Q.9: Two events A and B occur in S at time 0.3 and 0.4 µs at positions 150 and 210 m
respectively. Could these two events appear to be simultaneous/ occurring at same place
to an observer in another frame? If yes what would be the velocity of that frame relative
to S?
Q.10: Two events A and B occur at tA = 0.3 µs and xA=150m and tB = 0.6 µs and xB=210m
respectively in an inertial frame. Examine if there can be a suitable frame in which these
two events (i) are simultaneous and (ii) occur at same place. Find their velocities with
respect to the first frame. Find the proper time interval between these two events.
