1.

Substances diffuse across the cell membrane from regions of high concentration to regions of low
concentration, a process called passive transport, which occurs without energy being expended.

2. Molecular transport occurs when proteins in the cell membrane actively pump small molecules
across the cell membrane, regardless of concentration gradients. Bulk transport takes place when
larger molecules are either engulfed and brought into the cell or released out of the cell. Both
methods require energy.

3. The cell needs water from Its environ-ment. Water cannot easily pass through the cell membrane
because a layer of it is hydrophobic. Aquaporins allow water to pass easily across the mem-brane.
4. Organisms that live in salt water are hypotonic to their environment. This means water would rush
out of their cells if not regulated. Those in freshwater are hypertonic to their environment. Water
would rush into their cells if not regulated. The cell would eventually burst.

5. The fence represents the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, so it could be used to model facilitated
diffusion. The gates represent trans-membrane proteins, so they could be used to model active
transport using protein pumps.
