THE EVOLUTION OF FILMS THROUGHOUT HISTORY

The first time that a film was showed was in 1895, which was made by the Lumiere brothers.
The film showed a train that seemed going to crash with the audience. And it made that the
audience fled the place. In the firsts 30’s years, the films was completely mute, although is true
that film wasn’t able to produce any sound for itself, in the room there was a pianist or a little
orchestra. Some years after, films with sounds were created due to the aims of the directors
was always transmit feelings more efficiently. Between 1918 and 1927 had been variety of
experiments trying to create the sound film. One of that was made by Lee de Forest, who
invented the phonofilm, and other experiment was made by the warner Brothers Company.
The sound film changed techniques and ways to expression in cinematography. For example,
the image lost its beauty, and the camera lost mobility. Some films that show the change
between mute films and sound films are the famous musical “singing in the rain” and “the
artist”.

The color film appeared in 1901 when a film directed by Edward turner was created in which
was utilized for first time chromatic filters. The first film created completely with this
technique was “flowers and trees” by Walt Disney company. After, Technicolor techniques
took importance in all the sound films. For example in the film “Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs”. There was a time when the cinematography was thought to disappear due to
appearance of TV. All the changes related with cinematography hit Hollywood and for that
American filmmakers had to redefine the cinema in Hollywood. In that époque appeared films
about catastrophes and the main representative director was Irwin Allen. With films like
“Cabaret” and “ Apocalypse now”. While technology was changing, and appearing the special
effects, Hollywood cinematography was more interested in the appearance of its films, and in
other parts in the world filmmakers of ,mainly Europe, were improving the content in the films.
In that years between 1980 and 1990 there was a distinction between art films and
commercial films.

The use related with a computer revolutionized the way how to see and how to distribute
films, before, films was reproduced in celluloid rolls and you need 5 of them to reproduce one
hour of film, all of that changed with the computer due to only one computer was needed to
send and reproduce all the film. After that, Pixar Company developed a film completely made
with computer, which is toy story. The popularization of internet was a big help and a big
problem at the same time. It was because internet was a big way to spread films, but there
was a problem with intellectual property, even that problem continues today .
