Dear Student,

Greetings!

Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.

Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. - Gloria Steinem

The academic year 2023-24 has been studded with ongoing activities for your overall development although
learning is our primary objective. To help you through, I want to give you some tips and advice to help you
perform to the best of your ability.
1. There is enough time to make significant improvements in your grades
The time studying at home and in revision classes will have a significant impact on your results, right up to
the moment you walk into the exam. Keep working hard and use every moment you can to make that next
grade.
2. This is nothing to do with luck
There’s nothing called luck in the examination without studying the lesson. No one will say those students
who do well have been “lucky”; work hard and put the effort in and you will see the benefits.
3. Prioritize your time
Over the next few weeks, your exams must be your number one priority. This is the time to be disciplined
about how you use the precious time you have.
4. Use the staff to help you achieve the top grades
Don’t sit at home worrying about some content you are struggling with, ask your teachers for help as they
are the experts. They will always find time for you, and five minutes with a teacher could save you hours.
5. Work hard at home
Evenings and weekends are long enough to fit in relaxation and revision. Each evening, you should be
studying for 2 hours (not including your Period 6). Split your weekends into 3 (mornings, afternoons, and
evenings) and study for 2 out of 3.
6. Reward your hard work with some ‘down time’
Relax, get outside, and do some exercise. Studies show that students who punctuate their revision with
exercise outside do better in their exams.
7. Be honest and ruthless with your distractions
We all have distractions in our lives that stop us from doing what we need to do. Be disciplined with these
distractions, whether this is your phone, your PlayStation or something else. For the next few weeks these
must be managed. You will have plenty of time once the exams have finished!
8. Be Organized and prepared for the day
Use your exam timetable to know when and where your exams are. The morning of the exam can be very
busy and therefore preparation is key. Each night, make sure you have all the necessary equipment for the
next day. If you are not sure on what equipment you need, please speak to your Team Tutor.

 Ways to help your children…

1. Keep your child healthy. Seeing, hearing and feeling well are essential to learning.

2. Talk and listen to your children. The more words a child can understand and say, the easier it will
be for him or her to learn to read and understand. Your children will learn to express themselves if
they know you will give them your attention.

3. Praise and encourage your children. Praise and recognition reinforce learning. Praise them when
they succeed and help them when they have problems.

4. Be patient with your children.

5. Avoid comparing your children. Each child is unique. Do not harp on previous failures or results.

6. Schedule home study on a regular basis. To succeed in school many children need a regular study
time each day free from interruptions and distractions.

7. Set a bed time and stick to it. Your children will be in a proper frame of mind to learn only if they
report to school each morning well-rested.

8. See that your children’s school attendance is excellent. When children miss school, they miss the
presentation of new information or the mastery of a new concept.

9. Make family mealtimes meaningful. Mealtime can provide the ideal setting for talking together,
sharing events of the day and discussing individual problems and aspirations. Such discussions will
help develop your children’s self-confidence and encourage them to speak up in the classroom.

10. Make television your servant, not your master. Children learn a lot from television - good and bad.
Help them choose appropriate programs to watch. Then watch with them and, afterwards, discuss
what you’ve seen.

11. Every child has limitations to their abilities. Accept their limitations and help them to set goals to
increase their self-esteem.

12. Provide a wide variety of reading materials in your home. If you have books, magazines and
newspapers readily available and in use, your children will see that reading is source of pleasure
and information.

13. Give your children books as birthday or holiday gifts.

14. Help the child to develop self – discipline, self-direction, self-confidence and a sense of
accomplishment and maintaining his/her confidence especially when he/she seems discouraged by
grades. Do not displace your anxiety on the child.

15. Provide areas of responsibility: Determine responsibilities for your child according to the emotional
and chronological age. Start with a simple chore, and add responsibility as your child shows ability
to complete a chore unattended.

16. Create structure and discipline. Without proper discipline, your children will feel out of control.
Keep it consistent and let your children know ahead of time what the consequences are for their
actions.

17. Catch your child being good. A simple word or touch to let your children know you appreciate how
good they are being will increase their desire to be good.

Tap the Genius in your Child!

All children are born in this world with certain special gifts which are unique to them. There is no one
‘smart' gene; many traits contribute to genius. Brain connections grow throughout one's life span. Since
many factors are involved in shaping the structure and function of the brain, it is possible to modify the brain
and improve on its aspects, thanks to the brain's plasticity and our own efforts.

Every child is born not only with numerous talents but also the ability to combine learning, thinking and
creativity to become a genius. To enhance the mind's own natural developmental process, we should
consider enriching the following:

1. Appropriate opportunities and exposure

2. Emotions [happy learning = effective
learning]
3. Multi-sensorial learning [involve all 5
senses in learning]
4. Curiosity [what/why/how/where
questions]
5. Creativity [Ideas and imagination]

To identify a child's genius, make up a list of areas as exhaustive as possible to find out what s/he is good at.
You should also ask him/her what s/he is interested in. Eg. writing, dancing, sport, music, history, singing,
art, languages. Make another list of traits to identify response styled, eg. practical, energetic, talkative,
impulsive, etc. Then for each area / ability from the list, write down an example of how this gift is
demonstrated. Next, harness every learning opportunity to map out how these gifts can be developed best
using the resources available to you. These could be opportunities at school or at home. Brainstorm and
come up with ideas to tap these resources.
It is important for you and your child to believe in the child's genius or innate abilities. Visualize a picture of
success in your mind - the child manifesting its giftedness in various ways. When interacting with your child,
express confidence and
appreciation, particularly for effort,
without being over-focused on the
result.

Make sure your child is as eager as

you to partake in these activities.
Remember not to overdo things!
Trying to pack in too much may
make the child feel stressed. Does
s/he enjoy the activity? Is it fun?
Are you balancing out all the
activities over the day and across
the week? Is there still time for
unstructured play time and just
chill? This is because all children do
need time to relax and unwind.
