    What is Land Pollution?

    The degradation of the earth’s land surfaces, both above and below ground
    level, is referred to as land pollution. Land pollution occurs when trash,
    compost, and other toxins are dumped on the land polluting it. Land pollution is
    caused by human activities such as littering and waste washed ashore from
    boats and sewage treatment plants. The accumulation of solid and liquid waste
    products, which contaminate groundwater and soil, is the cause. It is a global
    issue that needs to be fixed immediately.
    Land Pollution Causes
    Soil pollution is a form of land pollution in which the soil’s upper layer is
    harmed. Overuse of chemical fertilizers, soil degradation caused by running
    water, and other pest control measures contribute to the loss of agricultural land

    • Agricultural Activities – The increase in pollution needs to be match by


    food production of a country which result in the widespread use of
    synthetic insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers, all of which contribute to
    pollution. Clearing of forests for land area in order to farm makes way for
    land pollution.
    • Mining Activities – Mining has the potential to pollute the air and water
    supply, damage biodiversity and ecosystems. Mining harms the
    ecosystem by destroying habitats, causing soil erosion, and polluting
    surface water, groundwater, and soil.
    • Nuclear Waste – The soil is also contaminated by radioactive waste from
    nuclear research stations and nuclear power plants. Since radioactive
    materials have a long half-life, they can survive in the soil for long
    periods of time.
    • Garbage - This is one of the most common causes of land pollution. You
    will find garbage in every household. Tonnes of garbage is produced by
    common households annually. When such massive amount gets generated,
    the ways to dispose of it falls short. Therefore, all this garbage gets dumped
    onto land. This land of disposal is referred to as a landfill which ultimately
    causes land pollution.

    Prevention of Land Pollution


    There are many ways which can help in preventing land pollution. In order to
    execute it, the government and citizens must come together to do so. We can
    begin with:
    • Reducing the usage of chemicals and pesticides

    Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides can help in


    preventing land pollution. Therefore, farmers must use natural ingredients
    instead of these harmful toxins. They can switch to manure and bio-
    fertilizers. This will help in minimizing land pollution.

    • Reforestation

    As we know that forests and grassland bind the soil. We must practice
    reforestation to protect the land from pollution. It will further prevent
    floods and soil erosion. Moreover, it will make the land more fertile and
    enhance biodiversity.

    • Recovering and Recycling Material

    We must recycle waste material to stop it from polluting the land. We


    must properly dispose of organic and inorganic waste separately. It will
    help in lessening the burden of landfills.
