The Bible developed over thousands of years through three main stages: the lived stage of oral tradition, the oral stage of passing down stories between generations, and the written stage where scribes began recording the stories on scrolls between 500 BCE and 300 BCE. Both the Old and New Testaments developed through these similar stages. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek and has since been translated into many languages, resulting in different versions available today.

Part 1 What is the Bible? The Bible is a collection of religious texts or scriptures sacred to Christians. To this day, the Bible is the best selling book of all time, with about 100 million copies being created every year. The Bible is not only one book, but rather a whole library of books! It includes many different kinds of writing, and covers over 4000 years of Judeo-Christian History! Stages of Scripture Development
The Old Testament was developed in
three stages. 1. The Lived Stage
These were the events lived out by the earliest Israelites
in the Hebrew Scriptures. 2. The Oral Stage The stories from the lived stage are passed on through generations of Israelites. Like many cultures around the world, these histories were communicated orally. The older generations memorized them and taught them to the younger generation. 3. The Written Stage
Israelite scribes began to collect, edit and record
these stories on scrolls, made of animal hides. They were written down to be preserved for future generations. Some sections of the scriptures were written down as early as 3000 years ago.
Most however were written down between 500
BCE and 300 BCE. Stages of Scripture Development
The New Testament was developed in a
similar way. 1. The Lived Stage
This was when Jesus was still around, and his
followers witnessed and experienced his life. 2. The Oral Stage After Jesus had passed away, his followers spread out into the world to start sharing his message. They told stories of his glory wherever they went, and many were punished with death. 3. The Written Stage The earliest written part of the Christian Scriptures was Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians. St. Paul was not an original follower of Jesus, but rather a man who sought out his followers to punish them. After Jesus revealed himself to Paul, he changed his ways and begun to help form what would eventually become Christianity. Paul is credited with writing letters to many different groups of people. The letters were meant to be read aloud and shared in the churches, because the messages contain extensive interpretations of the gospel, solutions to local problems in the churches, and advice about how early Christians were to live. The Gospels of the New Testament were all written between 70 and 110 CE.
Jesus is believed to have died sometime between
the years 30 – 36 CE. Languages of the Bible
The Bible was originally written in 3
different ancient languages. Hebrew Most of the Old Testament was written in the language of the people it was attributed to, the Hebrews. Aramaic Small portions of Genesis, Jeremiah, Ezra, and Daniel were written in Aramaic, an ancient language that is a cousin to Hebrew and Arabic. Greek All of the New Testament was originally written in Ancient Greek, the language that was predominant in the area at the time. What does this mean? The Bible was not originally written in English, or even Latin for that matter. This means that our modern day Bible has been subject to thousands of years of interpretation and translation. Because of this, there are many different versions of the Bible available today, translated into most modern languages. Comparison of Different Translations
