FMLR FM LINK RECEIVER
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The family of STL series FM links is the result of the new technologies for frequency synthesis. These devices
have also been designed to comply to the latest international standards, in order to satisfy even the most
exigent customers.
The whole modulation and demodulation chain has Hi-Fi quality with low background noise, high stereo
separation and limited harmonic distortion.
With the STL Links, the family of FM radio links by Elettronika was completely renewed both in its graphical
and design aspect. The user interface is indeed provided with a comfortable and intuitive I/O system based on
a 2Rx16C display and a 5-keys keypad to navigate the menus.
1.2 DESCRIPTION
The system described is made up by a transmitter, into a 19" 2U rack, and its twin receiver, into a 19" 1U
rack, both provided with alphanumeric display and remote control via RS232/485 and telemetering socket.
The transmitter for frequencies up to 1GHz has a synthesised oscillator (step 5kHz) with direct FM modulation
without using an intermediate frequency. This provides a high spurious rejection, since they are only the
harmonic of the selected channel. The design grants a quality signal-to-noise ration even for stereo broadcasting
on channels at the upper limit of the band (1GHz).
The output power is 20W for bands from 200 to 460MHz and 10W for the band from 850 to 1000MHz.
The RF final stage includes all needed protections to avoid being damaged, thus the output power is stopped
in case of excessive forward (120%Pnom) or reflected (20%Pnom) power.
The receiver has a triple conversion: the first is synthesised (step 1kHz) with VCTCXO reference in order to
allow the tuning of the first 70MHz intermediate frequency after filtering and pre-amplifying the received signal
with a wide-band LNA, with 3dB noise figure; the second is with quartz and allows to reach 10.7MHz, at
which level the signal is selectively filtered by a ceramic filter and amplified by 80dB; the third conversion is
also with quartz and allows to achieve an IF of 700kHz at which the signal is demodulated with a pulse
positioning system to obtain a band width starting from DC and going far beyond 100kHz.
The MPX signal so demodulated has Hi-Fi quality with extremely low crosstalk (>50dB @ 1kHz) and
distortion (<0.2% @ 1kHz) on the whole band width from 20Hz to 15kHz.
The receiver implements a threshold-excludable muting and a frequency Detuning indication used to constantly
keep the link at the central frequency.
Both devices have a 24V backup battery input to prevent interruptions in case of power failure.
18
The audio base-band processor has 600Ω balanced inputs and outputs, a 50/75µs emphasis/de-emphasis
section, elliptical low-pass filters (attenuation >50dB at 19kHz) and deviation limiter on both channels.
It is also possible to request the stereo encoder section with Hi-end features.
The FM modulation in the transmitter is directly synthesised up to 1GHz, while the triple-conversion system of
the receiver achieves professional performances.
Both devices use PLL-synthesis oscillators with VCTCXO (2.5ppm) reference or quartz oscillators (the
receiver has two conversions with 59.3MHz and 10MHz quartz oscillators) in order to have a signal-to-noise
ration better than 65dB up to 1GHz.
Programming the operating frequency is fast and easy, and as long as the change of the channel is within
±2/3MHz, there is no need to calibrate the input filter of the receiver.
The tuning of the oscillator once the new transmission channel has been set is easy and immediate.
The I/O system controls all of the main parameters of the FM link and allows to control them re-motely as
well as manage alarms.

DISPLAY BOARD SCH0394AR0
DESCRIPTION
The display board contains the HMI (human machine interface) of the equipment composed by a alphanumeric
2 rows x 16 columns display and a keys series, a connector for collecting and sending datas towards the
equipment mother-board and its thinking heart made by a Flash microcontroller.
The board is able of reading 8 analogic signals coming from mother-board. These are only bufferized on the
board and therefore their conditioning is made on the mother-board.
The remaining digital input and output signals are conneted directly to the micro, where is necessary some
interverntion speed, or are multiplexed on shift register where the speed is less important.
The board moreover provide the remotability to the equipment by an asyncronous serial, configurable as
RS232 or RS485 simply connecting the output connector to one of the two serial connectors present on the
display board.

FILTER MODULE MFG0023AR0 - MFG0024AR0 - MFG0025AR0
DESCRIPTION
The input filter is a band-pass composed by four coupled resonating cells; the tuning of the filter is achieved
by properly calibrating the four capacitors of the cells.
For filters of the 200 - 460MHz bands, both the coupling and the input and output SWR can be adjusted by
means of capacitors, while the 850 - 1000MHz band filter realises the couplings by means of separators and
input/output adaptations by means of variable-coupling inductive links.

STEREO DECODER BOARD SCH0467AR1
DESCRIPTION
The board contains the stages needed for the conditioning of the Left channel audio signal and for realising the
stereo decoding in compliance with the standard ITU racc. 450. The Right signal is provided through the
connection to the Mother board. The various sections are analysed below:
1. Stereo Decoder: stereo decoding is realised with IC11, IC5-6, IC3-4, IC8, IC9 provided the MPX signal in input.
2. Peak Detector: after the de-emphasis circuit, part of the audio signal is sampled to provide the indication of the
LEFT channel deviation on the frontal display. IC2-A serves as buffer for the duplicator and peak detector.
3. Low-pass Filter: the use of two filtering stages with elliptical filters LP1 and LP2 assures the adequate suppres-
sion of input signals at frequencies 19k and 38kHz.
4. De-emphasis: it is the active de-emphasis stage (IC3-B), with amplification to high frequencies. The time
constant is chosen between 25 and 50 microseconds by means of two jumpers (JP3-2). When they are
both enables they give 75µs (for the FCC standard).
5. Unbalanced/Balanced Converter: the conversion from unbalanced to balanced and the output interface
of the audio signal are realised electronically by the IC1 operational circuit. This assures an high gegree of
immunity from disturbances and a perfect symmetry in balancing.
6. RDS Decoder (if present): RDS decoding is realised with IC7 and provides the RDDA, RDCL and
QUALITY Signals for the correct decoding of the radio text information.

Component layout for adjustment points
Decoder Section
Enable the Stereo Decoder option from SW1 switch ‘1-2’ (enable if present the RDS Decoder IC7
from SW1 switch ‘3-4’).
With MPX signal present on the transmitter adjust C38 to have 6...7V on TP3 and verify that on TP4,
TP5 and TP6 there are rispectively 19kHz, 57kHz and 1kHz (if the RDS Decoder IC7 is present check
the 57kHz frequency on TP2).
With modulation analyser and audio signal on the LEFT input at 2.2Vpp, verify the frequency response
from 30 to 15kHz without emphasis. Correct any deviation from the nominal range by acting on LP1 and
LP2.
Insert the JP2 jumper (50µs). Check the frequency response.
Insert the JP3 jumper (25+50µs) as well and check again the frequency response.
Check the crosstalk between the two channels and act on R35, R36 and R44 to bring it to the nominal
levels.
Adjust R25 to have the correct deviation on the LEFT Meter indication of the display.
