PRAGATI MAIDAN: TRANSIT-

ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
DELHI METROPOLITAN REGION

Project Scope: Multi-modal functional integration (metro,

bus, paratransit), auxilliary commercial complex design,
user-flow analysis

The newly constructed metro station at Pragati Maidan

in New Delhi needed a multimodal interchange with an
auxiliary TOD as a bridge between three modes of transit:
metro-rail, bus and paratransit. The design of the complex
was approached through a user-based approach - rider flux
between the modes at different levels of the interchange was
mapped and analyzed to find commercial space placement.

The approach to the spatial planning guided by the vertical

plane inspired a sharded facade formed by the superimpo-
sition of three grids at 30° intervals. The trapezoidal solids
reflected the form of Raj Rewal’s Hall of Nations, an archi-
tectural icon of Pragati Maidan near the metro, which was to
be demolished in 2017. The uneven facade provides ample
ventilation to spaces lacking air-conditioning and internal
shading in Delhi’s hot and dry climate.

The competition entry was a finalist in Transparence 14.0, a

student design competition held by Ethos India.

functional design, transportation feasibility study

Kochi’s metro rail is slated to begin operation in 2017 to

provide a respite to the saturated road and strained public
transit system. However, to provide a seamless experience
while transiting between modes (ferry, bus and metro), the
metro demands a functional integration where a rider can
transfer despite poor weather conditions.

The proposed structure accounts for the tropical monsoon

and the humid climate through the year. Traditional Keralite
functional elements of rains chains are a pleasant surprise in
a building of large architectural scale.

β-WHEEL
GREATER BOSTON AREA

A three day hackathon resulted in the design of an autono-

mous foldable bike-cart. Existing generic foldable bikes can
receive a “β-wheel“ which guides the bike in a folded position
- a camera couple follows you when you reach an apartment
or the supermarket. The design was put to test through pro-
type development and user stories enactment.
